1Dann redete Gott. Er sagte:2„Ich bin Jahwe, dein Gott! Ich habe dich aus dem Sklavenhaus Ägyptens befreit.3Du sollst[1] keine anderen Götter haben neben mir!4Du sollst dir kein Götterbild machen, kein Abbild von irgendetwas im Himmel, auf der Erde oder im Meer!5Wirf dich niemals vor ihnen nieder und verehre sie auf keinen Fall! Denn ich, Jahwe, ich, dein Gott, bin ein eifersüchtiger Gott. Wer mich verachtet und beiseitestellt, bei dem verfolge ich die Schuld der Väter noch bis zur dritten und vierten Generation.6Doch wer mich liebt und meine Gebote hält, dem schenke ich meine Gunst auf tausend Generationen hin.7Du sollst den Namen Jahwes, deines Gottes, nie missbrauchen! Denn Jahwe wird jeden bestrafen, der seinen Namen mit Nichtigkeiten in Verbindung bringt.8Denk an den Sabbattag und überlass ihn Gott!9Sechs Tage hast du, um all deine Arbeit zu tun,10aber der siebte Tag ist Sabbat für Jahwe, deinen Gott. An diesem Tag sollst du nicht arbeiten, weder du noch dein Sohn oder deine Tochter, weder dein Sklave noch deine Sklavin, nicht einmal dein Vieh oder der Fremde, der in deinem Ort wohnt.11Denn in sechs Tagen hat Jahwe den Himmel und die Erde gemacht, das Meer und alles, was dazugehört. Am siebten Tag aber ruhte er. Deshalb hat er den Sabbattag gesegnet und für sich bestimmt.12Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter! Dann wirst du lange in dem Land leben, das Jahwe, dein Gott, dir gibt.13Du sollst nicht morden![2] (Mt 5,21; Jak 2,11)14Du sollst die Ehe nicht brechen![3] (Mt 5,27; Jak 2,11)15Du sollst nicht stehlen!16Du sollst nichts Unwahres über deinen Nächsten aussagen!17Begehre nichts,[4] was zu deinem Nächsten gehört![5] Du sollst weder seine Frau begehren noch seinen Sklaven oder seine Sklavin, sein Rind oder seinen Esel oder sonst etwas, das ihm gehört!“ (Röm 7,7; Röm 13,9)18Als das ganze Volk den Donner und die Flammen wahrnahm, das Dröhnen des Schofar und den rauchenden Berg, da zitterten sie vor Angst und hielten sich fern.19Zu Mose sagten sie: „Rede du mit uns! Wir werden auf dich hören. Gott soll nicht mit uns reden, sonst müssen wir sterben.“20Da sagte Mose zum Volk: „Ihr müsst keine Angst haben. Gott ist nur gekommen, um euch auf die Probe zu stellen. Die Furcht vor ihm sollte über euch kommen, damit ihr nicht sündigt.“21So blieb das Volk in der Ferne stehen. Mose aber näherte sich dem Dunkel, wo Gott war.
Das Altargesetz
22Jahwe sagte zu Mose: „Sag den Israeliten: 'Ihr habt miterlebt, wie ich vom Himmel her zu euch gesprochen habe.23Darum sollt ihr keine selbst gemachten Götter neben mich stellen, weder aus Silber noch aus Gold.24Macht mir einen Altar aus Erde und bringt darauf eure Schafe und Rinder als Brand- und Freudenopfer[6] dar. An jedem Ort, wo ihr durch ein Opfer an mich denkt, werde ich euch nahe sein und euch segnen.25Wenn ihr mir einen Altar aus Steinen bauen wollt, dürft ihr nur unbehauene Steine dafür verwenden. Wenn ihr sie mit einem Meißel bearbeiten würdet, hättet ihr den Altar entweiht.26Du sollst nicht auf Stufen zu meinem Altar hinaufsteigen, damit deine Nacktheit unter dem Gewand nicht zum Vorschein kommt.'“
1Here are all the words God spoke. He said,2‘I am the LORD your God. I brought you out of Egypt. That is the land where you were slaves.3‘Do not put any other gods in place of me.4‘Do not make for yourself statues of gods that look like anything in the sky. They may not look like anything on the earth or in the waters either.5Do not bow down to them or worship them. I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I cause the sins of the parents to affect their children. I will cause the sins of those who hate me to affect even their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.6But for all time to come I show love to all those who love me and keep my commandments.7‘Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will find guilty anyone who misuses his name.8‘Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.9Do all your work in six days.10But the seventh day is a sabbath to honour the LORD your God. Do not do any work on that day. The same command applies to your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and your animals. It also applies to any outsiders who live in your towns.11In six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in them. But he rested on the seventh day. So the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.12‘Honour your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving you.13‘Do not murder.14‘Do not commit adultery.15‘Do not steal.16‘Do not be a false witness against your neighbour.17‘Do not want to have anything your neighbour owns. Do not want to have your neighbour’s house, wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey.’18The people saw the thunder and lightning. They heard the trumpet. They saw the mountain covered with smoke. They trembled with fear and stayed a long way off.19They said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself. Then we’ll listen. But don’t let God speak to us. If he does, we’ll die.’20Moses said to the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. God has come to test you. He wants you to have respect for him. That will keep you from sinning.’21Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. But the people remained a long way off.
Worship the Lord
22Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Here is what you must tell the people of Israel. Say to them, “You have seen for yourselves what I said to you from heaven.23Do not put any other gods in place of me. Do not make silver or gold statues of them for yourselves.24‘ “Make an altar out of soil for me. Sacrifice your burnt offerings and friendship offerings on it. Sacrifice your sheep, goats and cattle on it. I will come to you and bless you everywhere I cause my name to be honoured.25If you make an altar out of stones to honour me, do not build it with blocks of stone. You will make it ‘unclean’ if you use a tool on it.26Do not walk up steps to my altar. If you do, someone might see your naked body under your robes.”
