Samuels Abschiedsrede

1 Samuel sagte dann zu ganz Israel: „Seht her, alles, was ihr von mir wolltet, habe ich getan und euch einen König gegeben. 2 Von jetzt an wird er euch vorangehen. Ich bin alt und grau geworden, meine Söhne sind ja unter euch. Von meiner Jugend an habe ich euch geführt, bis heute. 3 Hier stehe ich vor euch, vor Jahwe und seinem gesalbten König. Sprecht es aus, wenn ihr etwas gegen mich habt! Wem habe ich je ein Rind weggenommen oder einen Esel? Wen habe ich erpresst und wen unterdrückt? Von wem habe ich mich bestechen lassen und dann beide Augen zugedrückt? Ich bin bereit, alles zu erstatten!“ 4 „Du hast uns nicht erpresst“, erwiderten sie, „du hast uns nicht misshandelt, du hast von niemand etwas angenommen.“ 5 Da sagte er: „Jahwe und sein Gesalbter sind heute Zeugen, dass ihr kein Unrecht an mir gefunden habt.“ – „Ja, so ist es!“, riefen sie. 6 Dann sagte Samuel zum Volk: „Es war Jahwe, der Mose und Aaron eingesetzt und eure Väter aus Ägypten geführt hat. 7 Nun tretet her, dass ich mich zusammen mit euch vor Jahwes Gericht stelle. Es geht um alles, was Jahwe in seiner Gerechtigkeit für euch und eure Väter getan hat. 8 Als Jakob nach Ägypten gekommen war, schrien eure Vorfahren um Hilfe zu Jahwe. Da schickte er ihnen Mose und Aaron, die eure Väter aus Ägypten führten und sie in dieser Gegend hier wohnen ließen. 9 Aber bald vergaßen sie Jahwe, ihren Gott. Da gab er sie ihren Feinden preis: Sisera, dem Heerführer von Hazor,^[1] den Philistern und dem König von Moab,^[2] die gegen sie kämpften. 10 Da schrien sie zu Jahwe um Hilfe. 'Es war Unrecht', riefen sie dann, 'dass wir dich verlassen haben, Jahwe, und dass wir die Baale und Astarten verehrten. Befreie uns von unseren Feinden, dann wollen wir dir dienen!' 11 Da schickte Jahwe Jerub-Baal,^[3] Bedan,^[4] Jiftach und schließlich Samuel, um euch von euren Feinden zu befreien und euch sicher im Land wohnen zu lassen. 12 Als ihr dann aber gesehen habt, dass der Ammoniterkönig Nahasch mit seinem Heer gegen euch zog, sagtet ihr zu mir: 'Nein, ein König soll über uns regieren!', obwohl doch Jahwe, euer Gott, euer König ist. 13 Seht, da ist der König, den ihr haben wolltet! Seht, Jahwe hat einen König über euch gestellt! 14 Wenn ihr nun Jahwe fürchtet und ihm dient, wenn ihr ihm gehorcht und euch nicht gegen seine Anordnungen stellt, wenn ihr und der König, der über euch herrscht, Jahwe, eurem Gott, treu bleibt, ist es gut. 15 Wenn ihr Jahwe aber nicht gehorcht und euch seinen Anordnungen widersetzt, wird er sich mit seiner Macht gegen euch stellen wie gegen eure Väter. 16 So tretet jetzt her und seht, welch großes Wunder Jahwe vor euren Augen tun wird! 17 Es ist gerade Weizenernte. Ich will Jahwe anrufen, dass er Donner und Regen schickt. Dann erkennt ihr und werdet sehen, wie überaus böse es in Jahwes Augen war, einen König für euch zu verlangen.“ 18 Samuel rief Jahwe an und Jahwe ließ es an diesem Tag donnern und regnen. Da fürchtete sich das ganze Volk sehr vor Jahwe und vor Samuel, 19 und sie sagten zu Samuel: „Bitte Jahwe, deinen Gott, für deine Diener, dass wir nicht sterben müssen! Denn zu all unseren Sünden haben wir noch das Böse hinzugetan, einen König zu verlangen.“ 20 Samuel erwiderte ihnen: „Habt keine Angst! Ihr habt zwar all das Böse getan, doch haltet in Zukunft nur treu zu Jahwe und dient ihm von ganzem Herzen! 21 Weicht ja nicht ab und fangt nicht an, den Nichtsen^[5] nachzulaufen. Sie nützen euch nichts und können euch auch nicht retten, eben weil sie Nichtse sind. 22 Und weil sein großer Name dafür steht, wird Jahwe sein Volk nicht verlassen, denn es hat ihm nun einmal gefallen, euch zu seinem Volk zu machen. 23 Auch ich werde auf keinen Fall aufhören, für euch zu beten! Denn dann würde ich mich an Jahwe versündigen. Ich werde euch weiter den guten und richtigen Weg zeigen. 24 Ehrt nur Jahwe und dient ihm treu von ganzem Herzen! Seht doch, was für große Dinge er an euch getan hat! 25 Wenn ihr aber trotzdem Böses tut, werdet ihr samt eurem König weggerafft.“

Samuel’s final speech to Israel

1 Samuel spoke to all the Israelites. He said, ‘I’ve done everything you asked me to do. I’ve placed a king over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader. But I’m old. My hair is grey. My sons are here with you. I’ve been your leader from the time I was young until this day. 3 Here I stand. Bring charges against me if you can. The LORD is a witness. And so is his anointed king. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Have I cheated anyone? Have I treated anyone badly? Have I accepted money from anyone who wanted special favours? If I’ve done any of these things, I’ll make it right.’ 4 ‘You haven’t cheated us,’ they replied. ‘You haven’t treated us badly. You haven’t taken anything from anyone.’ 5 Samuel said to them, ‘The LORD is a witness against you this day. And so is his anointed king. They are witnesses that I haven’t taken anything from any of you.’ ‘The LORD is a witness,’ they said. 6 Then Samuel said to the people, ‘The LORD appointed Moses and Aaron. He brought out of Egypt your people who lived long ago. 7 Now then, stand here. I’m going to remind you of all the good things the LORD has done for you and your people. He is a witness. 8 ‘After Jacob’s family entered Egypt, they cried out to the LORD for help. The LORD sent Moses and Aaron. They brought your people out of Egypt. They had them make their homes in this land. 9 ‘But the people forgot the LORD their God. So he put them under the control of Sisera. Sisera was the commander of the army of Hazor. The LORD also put the Israelites under the control of the Philistines and the king of Moab. All those nations fought against Israel. 10 So the people cried out to the LORD. They said, “We have sinned. We’ve deserted the LORD. We’ve served gods that are named Baal. We’ve served female gods that are named Ashtoreth. But save us now from the power of our enemies. Then we will serve you.” 11 The LORD sent Gideon, Barak, Jephthah and me. He saved you from the power of your enemies who were all around you. So you lived in safety. 12 ‘But then you saw that Nahash, the king of Ammon, was about to attack you. So you said to me, “No! We want a king to rule over us.” You said it even though the LORD your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king you have chosen. He’s the one you asked for. The LORD has placed a king over you. 14 But you must have respect for the LORD. You must serve him and obey him. You must not say no to his commands. Both you and the king who rules over you must obey the LORD your God. If you do, that’s good. 15 But you must not disobey him. You must not say no to his commands. If you do, his power will be against you. That’s what happened to your people who lived before you. 16 ‘So stand still. Watch the great thing the LORD is about to do right here in front of you! 17 It’s time to gather in the wheat, isn’t it? I’ll call out to the LORD to send thunder and rain. Then you will realise what an evil thing you did in the sight of the LORD. You shouldn’t have asked for a king.’ 18 Samuel called out to the LORD. That same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So all the people had great respect for the LORD and for Samuel. 19 They said to Samuel, ‘Pray to the LORD your God for us. Pray that we won’t die because we asked for a king. That was an evil thing to do. We added it to all our other sins.’ 20 ‘Don’t be afraid,’ Samuel replied. ‘It’s true that you have done all these evil things. But don’t turn away from the LORD. Serve him with all your heart. 21 Don’t turn away and worship statues of gods. They are useless. They can’t do you any good. They can’t save you either. They are completely useless. 22 But the LORD will be true to his great name. He won’t turn his back on his people. That’s because he was pleased to make you his own people. 23 I would never sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. I’ll teach you to live in a way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to have respect for the LORD. Serve him faithfully. Do it with all your heart. Think about the great things he has done for you. 25 But don’t be stubborn. Don’t continue to do what is evil. If you do, both you and your king will be destroyed.’
