Josef gibt sich zu erkennen

1 Da konnte Josef sich vor seinen Leuten nicht länger beherrschen. Schnell schickte er sie alle hinaus. So stand niemand mehr bei ihm, als er sich seinen Brüdern zu erkennen gab. 2 Er weinte so laut, dass die Ägypter es hörten; auch am Hof des Pharao hörte man bald davon. 3 „Ich bin Josef!“, sagte er zu seinen Brüdern. „Lebt mein Vater noch?“ Seine Brüder aber brachten kein Wort heraus; fassungslos standen sie vor ihm. 4 Da sagte Josef zu seinen Brüdern: „Kommt doch her!“ Und als sie herantraten, sagte er: „Ich bin Josef, euer Bruder, den ihr nach Ägypten verkauft habt. 5 Erschreckt nicht und macht euch deswegen keine Vorwürfe! Denn Gott hat mich vor euch hierher geschickt, um viele Leben zu erhalten. 6 Denn die Hungersnot ist schon zwei Jahre im Land, und noch fünf Jahre lang wird es kein Pflügen und Ernten geben. 7 Doch Gott hat mich vor euch her geschickt, um euch Fortbestand auf der Erde zu geben und euch für eine große Rettung^[1] am Leben zu erhalten. 8 Nicht ihr habt mich hierher gebracht, sondern Gott. Er hat mich zum Vater^[2] für den Pharao gemacht, zum Herrn für seinen Hof und zum Herrscher über das ganze Land Ägypten. 9 Macht euch schnell auf den Weg zu meinem Vater und sagt ihm: , So spricht dein Sohn Josef: Gott hat mich zum Herrn von ganz Ägypten gemacht. Komm her zu mir, lass dich nicht aufhalten! 10 Du sollst im Gebiet von Goschen^[3] wohnen, ganz in meiner Nähe. Bring deine Kinder und Enkel mit, deine Schafe, deine Rinder und alles, was du hast. 11 Ich will dich dort versorgen, damit du mit deiner Familie nicht in Armut gerätst, denn die Hungersnot dauert noch fünf Jahre.' 12 Ihr seht es doch mit eigenen Augen, dass ich es bin, der mit euch redet, und auch du, mein Bruder Benjamin! 13 Ihr müsst meinem Vater von meiner Stellung hier in Ägypten erzählen. Berichtet ihm alles, was ihr gesehen habt! Und beeilt euch und bringt meinen Vater zu mir her!“ 14 Dann fiel er seinem Bruder Benjamin um den Hals, und beide weinten. 15 Danach küsste er unter Tränen auch seine anderen Brüder. Erst dann fanden diese ihre Sprache wieder und redeten mit ihm. 16 Als die Nachricht: „Josefs Brüder sind gekommen!“ den Hof des Pharao erreichte, löste sie bei ihm und seinen Beamten Freude aus. 17 Der Pharao sagte zu Josef: „Sag deinen Brüdern, sie sollen ihre Tiere beladen, ins Land Kanaan reisen 18 und euren Vater und eure Familien herholen. Ich will euch das Beste geben, was Ägypten zu bieten hat, ihr sollt die besten Erzeugnisse des Landes genießen. 19 Du bist berechtigt, sie anzuweisen: 'Nehmt euch Wagen aus Ägypten für eure Frauen und Kinder mit und lasst euren Vater aufsteigen und kommt! 20 Bedauert nicht den Verlust eures Hausrats, denn das Beste, was Ägypten zu bieten hat, soll euch gehören.'“ 21 Die Söhne Israels machten es so. Nach Weisung des Pharao gab Josef ihnen Wagen und Verpflegung für die Reise mit. 22 Jedem schenkte er ein Festgewand. Doch Benjamin gab er fünf Festgewänder und 300 ‹Schekel› Silber dazu. 23 Seinem Vater schickte er zehn Esel, beladen mit dem Besten Ägyptens, und zehn Eselinnen, beladen mit Getreide, Brot und anderen Nahrungsmitteln für die Reise. 24 Dann verabschiedete er seine Brüder, und sie zogen los. „Streitet euch nicht auf dem Weg!“, rief er ihnen nach. 25 Sie zogen also von Ägypten hinauf und kamen nach Kanaan zu ihrem Vater Jakob. 26 „Josef lebt!“, riefen sie. „Er ist sogar der Herr über ganz Ägypten!“ Aber sein Herz blieb kalt. Er glaubte ihnen nicht. 27 Da erzählten sie ihm ausführlich alles, was Josef ihnen aufgetragen hatte. Und als ihr Vater die Wagen sah, die Josef mitgeschickt hatte, um ihn zu holen, kam wieder Leben in ihn. 28 „Genug!“, rief er. „Mein Sohn Josef lebt noch! Ich will hin und ihn sehen, bevor ich sterbe!“

Joseph tells his brothers who he is

1 Joseph couldn’t control himself anymore in front of all his attendants. He cried out, ‘Make everyone leave me!’ So there wasn’t anyone with Joseph when he told his brothers who he was. 2 He wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him. Everyone in Pharaoh’s house heard about it. 3 Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers weren’t able to answer him. They were too afraid of him. 4 Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come close to me.’ So they did. Then he said, ‘I am your brother Joseph. I’m the one you sold into Egypt. 5 But don’t be upset. And don’t be angry with yourselves because you sold me here. God sent me ahead of you to save many lives. 6 For two years now, there hasn’t been enough food in the land. And for the next five years, people won’t be ploughing or gathering crops. 7 But God sent me ahead of you to keep some of you alive on earth. He sent me here to save your lives by an act of mighty power. 8 ‘So then, it wasn’t you who sent me here. It was God. He made me like a father to Pharaoh. He made me master of Pharaoh’s entire house. God made me ruler of the whole land of Egypt. 9 Now hurry back to my father. Say to him, “Your son Joseph says, ‘God has made me master of the whole land of Egypt. Come down to me. Don’t waste any time. 10 You will live in the area of Goshen. You, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and everything you have will be near me. 11 There I will provide everything you need. There are still five years to come when there won’t be enough food. If you don’t come down here, you and your family and everyone who belongs to you will lose everything.’ ” 12 ‘My brothers, I am Joseph. You can see for yourselves that I am the one speaking to you. My brother Benjamin can see it too. 13 Tell my father about all the honour given to me in Egypt. Tell him about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.’ 14 Then Joseph threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept. Benjamin also hugged him and wept. 15 Joseph kissed all his brothers and wept over them. After that, his brothers talked with him. 16 The news reached Pharaoh’s palace that Joseph’s brothers had come. Pharaoh and all his officials were pleased. 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Here’s what I want you to tell your brothers. Say to them, “Load your animals. Return to the land of Canaan. 18 Bring your father and your families back to me. I’ll give you the best land in Egypt. You can enjoy all the good things in the land.” 19 ‘And here’s something else I want you to tell them. Say to them, “Take some carts from Egypt. Your children and your wives can use them. Get your father and come back. 20 Don’t worry about the things you have back there. The best of everything in Egypt will belong to you.” ’ 21 Then the sons of Israel did so. Joseph gave them carts, as Pharaoh had commanded. He also gave them supplies for their journey. 22 He gave new clothes to each of them. But he gave Benjamin more than 3.5 kilograms of silver. He also gave him five sets of clothes. 23 He sent his father ten male donkeys loaded with the best things from Egypt. He also sent ten female donkeys loaded with corn and bread and other supplies for his journey. 24 Then Joseph sent his brothers away. As they were leaving he said to them, ‘Don’t argue on the way!’ 25 So they went up out of Egypt. They came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan. 26 They told him, ‘Joseph is still alive! In fact, he is ruler of the whole land of Egypt.’ Jacob was shocked. He didn’t believe them. 27 So they told him everything Joseph had said to them. Jacob saw the carts Joseph had sent to carry him back. That gave new life to their father Jacob. 28 Israel said, ‘I believe it now! My son Joseph is still alive. I’ll go and see him before I die.’
