Josef bei Potifar

1 Josef war von den Ismaëliten nach Ägypten gebracht worden. Sie verkauften ihn an einen ägyptischen Hofbeamten des Pharao namens Potifar. Er war der Befehlshaber der Leibwache. 2 Doch Jahwe stand Josef bei, sodass ihm alles gelang, was er tat. Er durfte sogar im Haus seines ägyptischen Herrn bleiben. 3 Und weil der Ägypter sah, dass Jahwe Josef beistand und ihm alles gelingen ließ, 4 schenkte er ihm seine Gunst und machte ihn zu seinem persönlichen Diener. Er übergab ihm die Aufsicht über sein Haus und vertraute ihm die Verwaltung seines ganzen Besitzes an. 5 Und von diesem Zeitpunkt an segnete Jahwe das Haus des Ägypters. Wegen Josef ruhte der Segen Jahwes auf allem, was er besaß, im Haus und auf dem Feld. 6 So überließ Potifar Josef alles, was er hatte, und kümmerte sich um nichts mehr, außer um sein eigenes Essen. Doch Josef war ein außergewöhnlich schöner Mann. 7 So kam es, dass die Frau seines Herrn ein Auge auf ihn warf. „Schlaf mit mir!“, sagte sie zu ihm. 8 Doch er weigerte sich und erwiderte: „Sieh doch, mein Herr verlässt sich auf mich. Er kümmert sich um nichts mehr, seit ich in seinem Haus bin, und hat mir alles anvertraut, was ihm gehört. 9 In diesem Haus gilt er nicht mehr als ich. Nichts hat er mir vorenthalten als nur dich, seine Frau. Wie könnte ich da ein so großes Unrecht begehen! Ich würde mich an Gott versündigen!“ 10 Obwohl sie Tag für Tag auf Josef einredete, mit ihr zu schlafen und ihr zu Willen zu sein, hörte er nicht auf sie. 11 Einmal hatte Josef im Haus zu tun, und niemand von der Dienerschaft war dort. 12 Da fasste sie ihn am Gewand. „Komm mit mir ins Bett!“, drängte sie. Doch er riss sich los und flüchtete hinaus. Das Gewand blieb in ihrer Hand zurück. 13 Als ihr bewusst wurde, dass er fort war, aber sein Gewand in ihrer Hand zurückgelassen hatte, 14 rief sie die Dienerschaft herbei und sagte: „Seht euch das an! Er hat uns diesen Hebräer ins Haus gebracht, der nun seinen Mutwillen mit uns treibt! Er ist zu mir gekommen und wollte mit mir schlafen. Da habe ich laut geschrien. 15 Als er meinen Aufschrei hörte, ließ er sein Gewand bei mir liegen und rannte hinaus.“ 16 Sie ließ Josefs Gewand neben sich liegen, bis sein Herr nach Hause kam. 17 Ihm erzählte sie dieselbe Geschichte: „Der hebräische Sklave, den du uns ins Haus gebracht hast, ist zu mir gekommen, um seinen Mutwillen mit mir zu treiben. 18 Als ich zu schreien anfing, ließ er sein Gewand neben mir liegen und rannte hinaus.“ 19 Als Potifar hörte, was sie seinem Sklaven vorwarf, packte ihn der Zorn. 20 Er ließ Josef ergreifen und in das Gefängnis bringen, in dem die Gefangenen des Königs verwahrt wurden.

21 Aber Jahwe in seiner Treue stand Josef bei. Er sorgte dafür, dass der Gefängnisverwalter ihm sein Wohlwollen schenkte. 22 Er übertrug Josef die Aufsicht über alle Gefangenen und alles, was man dort zu tun hatte. 23 Der Gefängnisverwalter vertraute ihm völlig und gab ihm freie Hand, denn Jahwe stand Josef bei und ließ ihm alles gelingen, was er unternahm.

Joseph and the wife of Potiphar

1 Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar had bought him from the Ishmaelite traders who had taken him there. Potiphar was one of Pharaoh’s officials. He was the captain of the palace guard. 2 The LORD was with Joseph. He gave him great success. Joseph lived in Potiphar’s house. 3 Joseph’s master saw that the LORD was with him. He saw that the LORD made Joseph successful in everything he did. 4 So Potiphar was pleased with Joseph and made him his attendant. He put Joseph in charge of his house. He trusted Joseph to take care of everything he owned. 5 From that time on, the LORD blessed Potiphar’s family and servants because of Joseph. He blessed everything Potiphar had in his house and field. 6 So Joseph took good care of everything Potiphar owned. With Joseph in charge, Potiphar didn’t have to worry about anything except the food he ate. Joseph was strong and handsome. 7 After a while, his master’s wife noticed Joseph. She said to him, ‘Come to bed with me!’ 8 But he refused. ‘My master has put me in charge,’ he told her. ‘Now he doesn’t have to worry about anything in the house. He trusts me to take care of everything he owns. 9 No one in this house is in a higher position than I am. My master hasn’t held anything back from me, except you. You are his wife. So how could I do an evil thing like that? How could I sin against God?’ 10 She spoke to Joseph day after day. But he told her he wouldn’t go to bed with her. He didn’t even want to be with her. 11 One day Joseph went into the house to take care of his duties. None of the family servants was inside. 12 Potiphar’s wife grabbed him by his coat. ‘Come to bed with me!’ she said. But he left his coat in her hand. And he ran out of the house. 13 She saw that he had left his coat in her hand and had run out of the house. 14 So she called her servants. ‘Look’, she said to them, ‘this Hebrew slave has been brought here to make fun of us! He came in here to force me to have sex with him. But I screamed for help. 15 He heard my scream. So he left his coat beside me and ran out of the house.’ 16 She kept Joseph’s coat with her until Potiphar came home. 17 Then she told him her story. She said, ‘That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to rape me. 18 But I screamed for help. So he left his coat beside me and ran out of the house.’ 19 Potiphar’s wife told him, ‘That’s how your slave treated me.’ When Joseph’s master heard her story, he became very angry. 20 So he put Joseph in prison. It was the place where the king’s prisoners were kept. While Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD was with him. He was kind to him. So the man running the prison was pleased with Joseph. 22 He put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners. He made him responsible for everything done there. 23 The man who ran the prison didn’t pay attention to anything in Joseph’s care. That’s because the LORD was with Joseph. He gave Joseph success in everything he did.
