1"Ruf aus voller Kehle! Rufe so laut du kannst! / Lass deine Stimme schallen wie ein Schofar-Horn / und halte meinem Volk seine Vergehen vor, / den Nachkommen Jakobs ihre Schuld!2Zwar befragen sie mich Tag für Tag / und wollen zu gern meine Wege erkennen. / Wie ein Volk, das recht vor mir lebt / und auch meine Gebote hält, / fordern sie von mir gerechtes Gericht / und begehren Gottes Nähe.3Warum fasten wir, und du siehst es nicht? / Warum demütigen wir uns, und du merkst es nicht einmal?' – Seht doch, was ihr an euren Fastentagen tut! / Ihr geht euren Geschäften nach und beutet eure Arbeiter aus.4Ihr fastet zwar, / aber gleichzeitig zankt und streitet ihr euch / und schlagt gleich mit gottloser Faust zu. / So wie ihr jetzt fastet, / verschafft ihr eurer Stimme droben kein Gehör.5Soll das vielleicht ein Fasttag sein, der mir gefällt, / ein Tag, an dem der Mensch sich beugt / und seinen Kopf wie eine Binse hängen lässt, / sich in den Trauersack hüllt und sich in die Asche setzt? / Nennst du das ein Fasten, / soll das ein Tag sein, der Jahwe gut gefällt?6Nein, ein Fasten, das mir gefällt, ist so: / Löst die Fesseln der Ungerechtigkeit, / knotet die Jochstricke auf, / gebt Misshandelten die Freiheit, / schafft jede Art von Unterdrückung ab!7Ladet Hungernde an euren Tisch, / nehmt Obdachlose bei euch auf! / Wenn du jemand halbnackt und zerlumpt herumlaufen siehst, / dann gib ihm etwas anzuziehen! / Hilf dem in deinem Volk, der deine Hilfe braucht!8Dann strahlt dein Licht wie die Morgenröte auf, / und deine Wunden heilen schnell. / Dann zieht die Gerechtigkeit vor dir her, / und die Herrlichkeit Jahwes wird deine Nachhut sein.9Wenn du dann zu Jahwe rufst, wird er dir Antwort geben; / wenn du um Hilfe schreist, wird er sagen: 'Ja, hier bin ich!' / Wenn du aufhörst, andere zu unterdrücken, / nicht verächtlich mit dem Finger zeigst / und niemand mehr verleumdest,10wenn du Hungernden das gibst, wonach du selbst Verlangen hast, / und so einen Darbenden satt machst, / dann strahlt dein Licht in der Finsternis auf, / die Nacht um dich wird wie der helle Tag,11dann wird Jahwe dich immer führen – auch im dürren Land macht er dich satt, / gibt dir die nötige Kraft –, dann wirst du wie ein Garten sein, der immer genug Wasser hat, / und wie eine Quelle, die niemals versiegt.12Die uralten Trümmerstätten bauen deine Leute wieder auf, / die Grundmauern vergangener Generationen stellst du wieder her. / Man wird dich den Maurer nennen, der die Lücken schließt, / der Straßenzüge wieder bewohnbar macht.13Wenn du dich am Sabbat zurückhältst, / wenn du nicht dein Vergnügen suchst an meinem heiligen Tag, / wenn dir der Sabbat eine Freude ist, / ein Ehrentag, ein heiliger Tag Jahwes, / wenn du ihn ehrst und nicht deine Wege erledigst, / Geschäfte betreibst und viele Worte machst,14dann wird Jahwe die Quelle deiner Freude sein. / Er wird dich über die Höhen des Landes führen / und lässt dich genießen das Erbe deines Stammvaters Jakob." / Ja, das hat Jahwe gesagt.
1‘Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.2For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.3“Why have we fasted,” they say, “and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?” ‘Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.4Your fasting ends in quarrelling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.5Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?6‘Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?7Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?8Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness[1] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.9Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: here am I. ‘If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,10and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.11The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.12Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.13‘If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honourable, and if you honour it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,14then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.’ For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
