Aufforderung zum Gehorsam

1 Nun höre, Israel! Ich werde euch über die Ordnungen und Rechte belehren, nach denen ihr handeln sollt. Befolgt sie, dann werdet ihr am Leben bleiben und das Land in Besitz nehmen, das Jahwe, der Gott eurer Väter, euch gibt! 2 Ihr sollt zu dieser Anweisung nichts hinzufügen und nichts davon wegnehmen, sondern ihr sollt die Gebote Jahwes, eures Gottes, halten, wie ich sie euch sage! 3 Ihr habt ja gesehen, was Jahwe wegen des Baal-Peor getan hat. Jahwe, dein Gott, hat jeden, der sich mit diesem Götzen einließ, aus deiner Mitte beseitigt.^[1] 4 Doch ihr habt an Jahwe, eurem Gott, festgehalten. Deshalb seid ihr alle heute noch am Leben. 5 Seht, ich habe euch Ordnungen und Rechte gelehrt, so wie Jahwe, mein Gott, es mir befahl, damit ihr danach handelt in dem Land, das ihr in Besitz nehmen werdet. 6 Vergesst sie nicht und richtet euch danach! Denn darin besteht eure Weisheit und Einsicht in den Augen der Völker. Wenn sie von diesen Ordnungen hören, werden sie sagen: „Was für ein weises und einsichtiges Volk ist diese große Nation!“ 7 Denn welche große Nation hat Götter, die ihr so nahe sind wie Jahwe, unser Gott, wann immer wir zu ihm rufen? 8 Und wo gibt es eine große Nation, die so gerechte Ordnungen und Vorschriften hätte wie dieses Gesetz, das ich euch heute vorlege. 9 Nur hüte dich und achte gut auf dich selbst, dass du nicht vergisst, was du mit eigenen Augen gesehen hast, dass dir diese Dinge dein ganzes Leben lang nicht aus dem Sinn kommen! Erzähle deinen Kindern und Enkeln davon! 10 Denk an den Tag, an dem du vor Jahwe, deinem Gott, am Horeb standest, als Jahwe zu mir sagte: „Ruf das Volk zusammen, damit sie meine Worte hören und lernen, mich zu fürchten^[2] ihr ganzes Leben lang, und das auch ihre Kinder lehren!“ 11 Da kamt ihr heran und standet unten am Berg. Der Berg brannte lichterloh bis in den Himmel hinein und war von Finsternis, Wolken und Dunkel umgeben. 12 Mitten aus dem Feuer sprach Jahwe zu euch. Ihr hörtet den Schall seiner Worte, aber ihr habt keine Gestalt gesehen, sondern nur eine Stimme gehört. 13 Er verkündete euch seinen Bund, den er euch zu halten befahl: die Zehn Gebote. Er schrieb sie auf zwei Tafeln aus Stein. 14 Und mir befahl Jahwe damals, euch die Ordnungen und Vorschriften zu lehren, damit ihr euch in dem Land, das ihr in Besitz nehmen wollt, danach richtet.

Warnung vor Götzendienst

15 Als Jahwe am Horeb aus dem Feuer zu euch sprach, habt ihr keine Gestalt gesehen. So hütet euch um eures Lebens willen, 16 dass ihr nicht ins Verderben rennt und euch ein Gottesbild macht, das irgendetwas darstellt, eine Statue, das Abbild eines männlichen oder weiblichen Wesens, 17 das Abbild eines Landtiers oder eines fliegenden Vogels, 18 das Abbild eines Kriechtiers oder eines Fischs im Wasser. 19 Und wenn ihr zum Himmel aufblickt und die Sonne, den Mond und die Sterne seht, das ganze Himmelsheer, dann lasst euch ja nicht verleiten, vor ihnen niederzufallen und sie zu verehren. Jahwe, dein Gott, hat sie doch allen Völkern auf der ganzen Welt zugeteilt. 20 Aber euch hat Jahwe aus dem eisernen Schmelzofen Ägyptens herausgeführt, damit ihr sein eigenes Volk sein solltet, wie es heute der Fall ist. 21 Doch wegen euch ist Jahwe über mich zornig geworden und hat geschworen, dass ich den Jordan nicht überschreiten und in das gute Land kommen darf, das Jahwe, dein Gott, dir als Erbbesitz gibt. 22 Denn ich sterbe in diesem Land hier. Ich gehe nicht über den Jordan. Aber ihr werdet hinüberziehen und dieses gute Land in Besitz nehmen. 23 Nehmt euch in Acht! Vergesst ja nicht den Bund, den Jahwe, euer Gott, mit euch geschlossen hat! Ihr dürft euch kein Gottesbild machen, das irgendetwas darstellt. Jahwe, dein Gott, hat dir das verboten. 24 Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, ist ein vernichtendes Feuer, ein eifersüchtiger Gott!^[3] (Hebr 12,29) 25 Und wenn du Kinder und Enkel hast und ihr im Land heimisch geworden seid und euch dann ein Gottesbild in irgendeiner Gestalt macht und tut, was vor Jahwe, deinem Gott, böse ist und ihn reizt, 26 so rufe ich heute den Himmel und die Erde als Zeugen gegen euch auf: Dann werdet ihr schnell wieder aus dem Land beseitigt sein, in das ihr über den Jordan zieht, um es in Besitz zu nehmen. Dann werdet ihr nicht lange darin wohnen, sondern völlig daraus entfernt werden. 27 Dann wird Jahwe euch unter die Völker zerstreuen, und nur eine geringe Zahl von euch wird unter den Nationen übrig bleiben, zu denen Jahwe euch dann führt. 28 Dort werdet ihr Göttern dienen, die Machwerke von Menschenhand sind, Göttern aus Holz und Stein, die nicht sehen, hören, essen oder riechen können. 29 Und von dort aus werdet ihr Jahwe, euren Gott, suchen. Du wirst ihn finden, wenn du von ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele nach ihm suchst. 30 Wenn du in Not bist und all dies dich trifft am Ende der Zeit, dann wirst du zu Jahwe, deinem Gott, umkehren und auf ihn hören. 31 Denn Jahwe, dein Gott, ist ein barmherziger Gott. Er wird dich nicht aufgeben und dem Verderben überlassen. Er wird den Bund nicht vergessen, den er deinen Vorfahren verbindlich zugesagt hat.

Jahwe ist Gott

32 Frag doch nach den früheren Zeiten, die vor dir gewesen sind, von der Zeit an, als Gott den Menschen auf der Erde schuf; frag von einem Ende des Himmels bis zum anderen, ob je so große Dinge geschehen sind oder je dergleichen gehört worden ist. 33 Hat je ein Volk die Stimme Gottes aus dem Feuer reden hören, wie du sie gehört hast, und ist am Leben geblieben? 34 Hat jemals ein Gott es unternommen, sich eine Nation mitten aus einer anderen herauszuholen durch Prüfungen, Zeichen, Wunder und Krieg, mit starker Hand und ausgestrecktem Arm, mit großen und furchtbaren Taten, wie Jahwe, euer Gott, es vor deinen Augen in Ägypten für euch getan hat? 35 Du hast es zu sehen bekommen, damit du erkennst, dass Jahwe Gott ist und sonst keiner. 36 Vom Himmel her hat er dich seine Stimme hören lassen, um dich zurechtzuweisen; und auf der Erde hat er dich sein großes Feuer sehen lassen. Seine Worte hast du mitten aus dem Feuer gehört. 37 Und weil er deine Vorfahren geliebt und ihre Nachkommen erwählt hat, führte er dich in eigener Person und mit großer Kraft aus Ägypten heraus, 38 um Nationen, größer und stärker als du, vor dir zu vertreiben, um dich in dieses Land zu bringen und dir ihr Land als Eigentum zu geben, wie es jetzt geschieht. 39 So begreif es heute endlich und nimm es dir zu Herzen, dass Jahwe oben im Himmel und unten auf der Erde allein Gott ist, keiner sonst! 40 Halte dich an seine Ordnungen und Gebote, auf die ich dich heute verpflichte, damit es dir und deinen Nachkommen gut geht und du lange lebst in dem Land, das Jahwe, dein Gott, dir für immer gibt.

Die Asylstädte im Ostjordanland

41 Damals sonderte Mose drei Städte im Ostjordanland aus, 42 damit ein Totschläger, der seinen Nächsten ohne Vorsatz totgeschlagen hat, ohne ihn schon vorher zu hassen, dorthin fliehen kann. Er soll in einer dieser Städte sein Leben retten können. 43 Es sind Bezer im Wüstengebiet der Hochebene für Ruben, Ramot in Gilead für Gad und Golan im Baschan für Manasse.

Einleitung zum Gesetz

44 Es folgt jetzt das Gesetz, das Mose den Israeliten vorlegte. 45 Das sind die Weisungen, Vorschriften und Bestimmungen, die Mose den Israeliten vortrug, als sie nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten 46 in der Tiefebene des Ostjordanlands, gegenüber von Bet-Peor, angekommen waren. Dieses Land hatte dem Amoriterkönig Sihon gehört, der in Heschbon regierte, und von Mose und den Israeliten besiegt worden war. 47 Nachdem sie sein Land in Besitz genommen hatten, eroberten sie auch das Land des Königs Og von Baschan, das waren die beiden Amoriterkönige, die im Ostjordanland herrschten. Sie eroberten das ganze Gebiet 48 von Aroër an, das am Rand des Arnontals liegt, bis an den Berg Sion, also den Hermon, 49 die ganze Ebene des Ostjordanlandes bis ans Tote Meer unterhalb der Hänge des Pisga.

1 وَالآنَ أَصْغُوا يَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ إِلَى الشَّرَائِعِ وَالأَحْكَامِ الَّتِي أُعَلِّمُهَا لَكُمْ لِتَعْمَلُوا بِها، فَتَحْيَوْا وَتَدْخُلُوا لاِمْتِلاكِ الأَرْضِ الَّتِي يُوَرِّثُهَا لَكُمُ الرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ 2 لَا تُضِيفُوا عَلَى مَا أُوصِيكُمْ بِهِ وَلا تُنَقِّصُوا مِنْهُ، بَلْ أَطِيعُوا أَوَامِرَ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمُ الَّتِي أُوْصِيكُمْ بِها. 3 لَقَدْ شَهِدَتْ أَعْيُنُكُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ الرَّبُّ بِبَعْلِ فَغُورَ، إِذْ أَبَادَ الرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ مِنْ بَيْنِكُمْ كُلَّ مَنْ غَوَى وَرَاءَ بَعْلِ فَغُورَ. 4 وَأَمَّا أَنْتُمُ الَّذِينَ تَعَلَّقْتُمْ بِالرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمْ فَجَمِيعُكُمْ أَحْيَاءُ الْيَوْمَ. 5 انْظُرُوا، هَا أَنَا قَدْ عَلَّمْتُكُمْ شَرَائِعَ وَأَحْكَاماً كَمَا أَمَرَنِي الرَّبُّ إِلَهِي لِتَعْمَلُوا بِمُوْجِبِهَا فِي الأَرْضِ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ مَاضُونَ إِلَيْهَا لِتَرِثُوهَا. 6 فَاحْفَظُوهَا وَطَبِّقُوهَا، لأَنَّهَا هِيَ حِكْمَتُكُمْ وَفِطْنَتُكُمْ لَدَى الشُّعُوبِ الَّذِينَ يَسْمَعُونَ عَنْ هَذِهِ الشَّرَائِعِ، فَيَقُولُوا: إِنَّ هَذَا الشَّعْبَ الْعَظِيمَ هُوَ حَقّاً شَعْبٌ حَكِيمٌ فَطِنٌ. 7 لأَنَّهُ أَيُّ شَعْبٍ، مَهْمَا عَظُمَ، لَهُ آلِهَةٌ قَرِيبَةٌ مِنْهُ مِثْلُ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِنَا فِي كُلِّ مَا نَدْعُوهُ؟ 8 وَأَيُّ شَعْبٍ، مَهْمَا عَظُمَ، لَدَيْهِ شَرَائِعُ وَأَحْكَامٌ عَادِلَةٌ نَظِيرُ هَذِهِ الشَّرَائِعِ الَّتِي أَضَعُهَا الْيَوْمَ أَمَامَكُمْ؟ 9 إِنَّمَا احْتَرِزُوا وَاحْذَرُوا لِئَلّا تَنْسَوْا الأُمُورَ الَّتِي شَهِدَتْهَا أَعْيُنُكُمْ فَلا تَنْمَحِي مِنْ قُلُوبِكُمْ كُلَّ أَيَّامِ حَيَاتِكُمْ. وَعَلِّمُوهَا لأَوْلادِكُمْ وَلأَحْفَادِكُمْ. 10 فَفِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي مَثَلْتُمْ فِيهِ أَمَامَ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمْ فِي جَبَلِ حُورِيبَ، حِينَ قَالَ لِي الرَّبُّ: اجْمَعْ لِيَ الشَّعْبَ حَتَّى أُسْمِعَهُمْ كَلامِي، فَيَتَعَلَّمُوا مَخَافَتِي طَوَالَ أَيَّامِ حَيَاتِهِمْ عَلَى الأَرْضِ، وَيُعَلِّمُوا أَوْلادَهُمْ أَيْضاً. 11 فَتَقَدَّمْتُمْ وَوَقَفْتُمْ عِنْدَ سَفْحِ الْجَبَلِ الْمُشْتَعِلِ بِنَارٍ امْتَدَّتْ أَلْسِنَةُ لَهَبِهَا إِلَى كَبِدِ السَّمَاءِ، وَتَلَفَّعَتْ بِسُحُبٍ دَاكِنَةٍ وَضَبَابٍ. 12 فَخَاطَبَكُمُ الرَّبُّ مِنْ وَسَطِ النَّارِ، فَسَمِعْتُمْ صَوْتَ كَلِمَاتِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ تُبْصِرُوا لَهُ صُورَةً. 13 وَأَعْلَنَ لَكُمْ عَهْدَهُ، الْوَصَايَا الْعَشَرَ الَّتِي نَقَشَهَا عَلَى لَوْحَيْ حَجَرٍ، وَأَمَرَكُمْ أَنْ تَعْمَلُوا بِها. 14 كَمَا أَمَرَنِي فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ أَنْ أُعَلِّمَكُمْ شَرَائِعَهُ وَأَحْكَامَهُ لِتُطَبِّقُوهَا فِي الأَرْضِ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ مَاضُونَ إِلَيْهَا لِتَرِثُوهَا.

حظر صنع التماثيل وعبادتها

15 فَاحْذَرُوا لأَنْفُسِكُمْ جِدّاً، فَأَنْتُمْ لَمْ تَرَوْا صُورَةً مَا حِينَ خَاطَبَكُمُ الرَّبُّ فِي جَبَلِ حُورِيبَ مِنْ وَسَطِ النَّارِ. 16 لِئَلّا تَفْسَدُوا فَتَنْحَتُوا لَكُمْ تِمْثَالاً لِصُورَةٍ مَا لِمِثَالِ رَجُلٍ أَوِ امْرَأَةٍ. 17 أَوْ شِبْهَ بَهِيمَةٍ مَا مِمَّا عَلَى الأَرْضِ، أَوْ شِبْهَ طَيْرٍ مَا مِنْ طُيُورِ السَّمَاءِ. 18 أَوْ شِبْهَ كَائِنٍ مَا مِنْ زَوَاحِفِ الأَرْضِ، أَوْ شِبْهَ سَمَكٍ مَا مِمَّا فِي الْمَاءِ تَحْتَ الأَرْضِ. 19 أَوْ لِئَلّا تَتَطَلَّعُوا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَتُشَاهِدُوا الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ وَالنُّجُومَ وَالأَجْرَامَ السَّمَاوِيَّةَ الَّتِي وَزَّعَهَا الرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ عَلَى جَمِيعِ الأُمَمِ الَّتِي تَحْتَ السَّمَاءِ، فَتَغْوُوا وَتَسْجُدُوا لَهَا وَتَعْبُدُوهَا. 20 أَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَقَدِ اخْتَارَكُمُ الرَّبُّ وَأَخْرَجَكُمْ مِنْ أَتُونِ الْحَدِيدِ مِنْ دِيَارِ مِصْرَ لِتَكُونُوا لَهُ شَعْبَ مِيرَاثِهِ، كَمَا أَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ.

غضب الرب على موسى

21 وَلَكِنَّ الرَّبَّ غَضِبَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ أَجْلِكُمْ وَأَقْسَمَ أَلّا أَعْبُرَ نَهْرَ الأُرْدُنِّ وَلا أَطَأَ الأَرْضَ الْخَصِيبَةَ الَّتِي وَهَبَكُمْ إِيَّاهَا الرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ نَصِيباً. 22 كَذَلِكَ فَأَنَا أَمُوتُ فِي هَذِهِ الأَرْضِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ أَجْتَازَ نَهْرَ الأُرْدُنِّ. وَأَمَّا أَنْتُمْ فَتَعْبُرُونَهُ وَتَرِثُونَ تِلْكَ الأَرْضَ الْخَصِيبَةَ. 23 وَلَكِنْ إِيَّاكُمْ أَنْ تَنْسَوْا عَهْدَ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمُ الَّذِي قَطَعَهُ مَعَكُمْ وَتَنْحَتُوا لأَنْفُسِكُمْ تِمْثَالاً لِصُورَةٍ مَا مِمَّا نَهَاكُمُ الرَّبُّ إِلَهُكُمْ عَنْهُ. 24 لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ إِلَهَكُمْ هُوَ نَارٌ آكِلَةٌ وَإِلَهٌ غَيُورٌ.

عقوبة عبادة الأصنام

25 وَإذَا أَنْجَبْتُمْ بَنِينَ وَأَحْفَاداً وَمَكَثْتُمْ طَوِيلاً فِي الأَرْضِ، ثُمَّ غَوَيْتُمْ فَنَحَتُّمْ لَكُمْ تِمْثَالاً لِصُورَةِ شَيْءٍ مَا، وَارْتَكَبْتُمُ الشَّرَّ فِي عَيْنَيِ الرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمْ لإِثَارَةِ غَيْظِهِ، 26 فَإِنَّنِي أُشْهِدُ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ السَّمَاءَ وَالأَرْضَ، أَنَّكُمْ تَنْقَرِضُونَ سَرِيعاً مِنَ الْأَرْضِ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ عَابِرُونَ نَهْرَ الأُرْدُنِّ إِلَيْهَا لِتَرِثُوهَا، وَلَنْ تَطُولَ بِكُمُ الأَيَّامُ عَلَيْهَا، إِذْ لابُدَّ أَنَّكُمْ حِينَئِذٍ هَالِكُونَ. 27 وَيُشَتِّتُكُمُ الرَّبُّ بَيْنَ الأُمَمِ فَتُصْبِحُونَ أَقَلِّيَّةً بَيْنَ الشُّعُوبِ الَّتِي يَسُوقُكُمْ إِلَيْهَا. 28 وَهُنَاكَ تَعْبُدُونَ آلِهَةً مِنْ خَشَبٍ وَحَجَرٍ مِنْ صَنْعَةِ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ، مِمَّا لَا يُبْصِرُ وَلا يَسْمَعُ وَلا يَأْكُلُ وَلا يَشُمُّ. 29 وَلَكِنْ إِنْ طَلَبْتُمْ مِنْ هُنَاكَ الرَّبَّ إِلَهَكُمْ، مُلْتَمِسِينَهُ مِنْ كُلِّ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَنُفُوسِكُمْ، فَإِنَّكُمْ تَجِدُونَهُ. 30 فَعِنْدَمَا يَكْتَنِفُكُمُ الضِّيقُ وَتُصِيبُكُمْ فِي آخِرِ الأَيَّامِ جَمِيعُ هَذِهِ الأُمُورِ، عِنْدَئِذٍ تَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى الرَّبِّ إِلَهِكُمْ وَتُطِيعُونَ أَوَامِرَهُ. 31 لأَنَّ الرَّبَّ إِلَهَكُمْ إِلَهٌ رَحِيمٌ لَا يَنْبِذُكُمْ وَلا يُفْنِيكُمْ، وَلا يَنْسَى عَهْدَ آبَائِكُمُ الَّذِي أَقْسَمَ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهِ.

الرب هو الله

Obedience commanded

1 Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you. 3 You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor. The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor, 4 but all of you who held fast to the Lord your God are still alive today. 5 See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him? 8 And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today? 9 Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. 10 Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, when he said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me to hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as they live in the land and may teach them to their children.’ 11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets. 14 And the Lord directed me at that time to teach you the decrees and laws you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Idolatry forbidden

15 You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars – all the heavenly array – do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshipping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the Lord took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are. 21 The Lord was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land. 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. 25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time – if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the Lord will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. 29 But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey him. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.

The Lord is God

32 Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God^[1] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? 35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today. 39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. 40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

Cities of refuge

41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally killed a neighbour without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

Introduction to the law

44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion^[2] (that is, Hermon), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,^[3] below the slopes of Pisgah.

1 以色列人哪，现在我所教训你们的律例典章，你们要听从遵行，好叫你们存活，得以进入耶和华 ─ 你们列祖之　神所赐给你们的地，承受为业。 2 所吩咐你们的话，你们不可加添，也不可删减，好叫你们遵守我所吩咐的，就是耶和华 ─ 你们　神的命令。 3 耶和华因巴力 ? 珥的事所行的，你们亲眼看见了。凡随从巴力 ? 珥的人，耶和华 ─ 你们的　神都从你们中间除灭了。 4 惟有你们专靠耶和华 ─ 你们　神的人，今日全都存活。 5 我照着耶和华 ─ 我　神所吩咐的将律例典章教训你们，使你们在所要进去得为业的地上遵行。 6 所以你们要谨守遵行；这就是你们在万民眼前的智慧、聪明。他们听见这一切律例，必说：这大国的人真是有智慧，有聪明！ 7 那一大国的人有　神与他们相近，像耶和华 ─ 我们的　神、在我们求告他的时候与我们相近呢？ 8 又那一大国有这样公义的律例典章、像我今日在你们面前所陈明的这一切律法呢？ 9 你只要谨慎，殷勤保守你的心灵，免得忘记你亲眼所看见的事，又免得你一生这事离开你的心；总要传给你的子子孙孙。 10 你在何烈山站在耶和华 ─ 你　神面前的那日，耶和华对我说：你为我招聚百姓，我要叫他们听见我的话，使他们存活在世的日子，可以学习敬畏我，又可以教训儿女这样行。 11 那时你们近前来，站在山下；山上有火焰冲天，并有昏黑、密云、幽暗。 12 耶和华从火焰中对你们说话，你们只听见声音，却没有看见形像。 13 他将所吩咐你们当守的约指示你们，就是十条诫，并将这诫写在两块石版上。 14 那时耶和华又吩咐我将律例典章教训你们，使你们在所要过去得为业的地上遵行。 15 所以，你们要分外谨慎；因为耶和华在何烈山、从火中对你们说话的那日，你们没有看见甚麽形像。 16 惟恐你们败坏自己，雕刻偶像，彷佛甚麽男像女像， 17 或地上走兽的像，或空中飞鸟的像， 18 或地上爬物的像，或地底下水中鱼的像。 19 又恐怕你向天举目观看，见耶和华 ─ 你的　神为天下万民所摆列的日月星，就是天上的万象，自己便被勾引敬拜事奉他。 20 耶和华将你们从埃及领出来，脱离铁炉，要特作自己产业的子民，像今日一样。 21 耶和华又因你们的缘故向我发怒，起誓必不容我过约但河，也不容我进入耶和华 ─ 你　神所赐你为业的那美地。 22 我只得死在这地，不能过约但河；但你们必过去得那美地。 23 你们要谨慎，免得忘记耶和华 ─ 你们　神与你们所立的约，为自己雕刻偶像，就是耶和华 ─ 你　神所禁止你做的偶像； 24 因为耶和华 ─ 你的　神乃是烈火，是忌邪的　神。 25 你们在那地住久了，生子生孙，就雕刻偶像，彷佛甚麽形像，败坏自己，行耶和华 ─ 你　神眼中看为恶的事，惹他发怒。 26 我今日呼天唤地向你们作见证，你们必在过约但河得为业的地上速速灭尽！你们不能在那地上长久，必尽行除灭。 27 耶和华必使你们分散在万民中；在他所领你们到的万国里，你们剩下的人数稀少。 28 在那里，你们必事奉人手所造的　神，就是用木石造成、不能看、不能听、不能吃、不能闻的　神。 29 但你们在那里必寻求耶和华 ─ 你的　神。你尽心尽性寻求他的时候，就必寻见。 30 日後你遭遇一切患难的时候，你必归回耶和华 ─ 你的　神，听从他的话。 31 耶和华 ─ 你　神原是有怜悯的　神；他总不撇下你，不灭绝你，也不忘记他起誓与你列祖所立的约。 32 你且考察在你以前的世代，自　神造人在世以来，从天这边到天那边，曾有何民听见　神在火中说话的声音，像你听见还能存活呢？ 33 这样的大事何曾有、何曾听见呢？ 34 神何曾从别的国中将一国的人民领出来，用试验、神迹、奇事、争战、大能的手，和伸出来的膀臂，并大可畏的事，像耶和华 ─ 你们的　神在埃及，在你们眼前为你们所行的一切事呢？ 35 这是显给你看，要使你知道，惟有耶和华 ─ 他是　神，除他以外，再无别神。 36 他从天上使你听见他的声音，为要教训你，又在地上使你看见他的烈火，并且听见他从火中所说的话。 37 因他爱你的列祖，所以拣选他们的後裔，用大能亲自领你出了埃及， 38 要将比你强大的国民从你面前赶出，领你进去，将他们的地赐你为业，像今日一样。 39 所以，今日你要知道，也要记在心上，天上地下惟有耶和华他是　神，除他以外，再无别神。 40 我今日将他的律例诫命晓谕你，你要遵守，使你和你的子孙可以得福，并使你的日子在耶和华 ─ 你　神所赐的地上得以长久。 41 那时，摩西在约但河东，向日出之地，分定三座城， 42 使那素无仇恨、无心杀了人的，可以逃到这三城之中的一座城，就得存活： 43 为流便人分定旷野平原的比悉；为迦得人分定基列的拉末；为玛拿西人分定巴珊的哥兰。 44 摩西在以色列人面前所陈明的律法 ─ 45 就是摩西在以色列人出埃及後所传给他们的法度、律例、典章； 46 在约但河东伯 ? 珥对面的谷中，在住希实本、亚摩利王西宏之地；这西宏是摩西和以色列人出埃及後所击杀的。 47 他们得了他的地，又得了巴珊王噩的地，就是两个亚摩利王，在约但河东向日出之地。 48 从亚嫩谷边的亚罗珥，直到西云山，就是黑门山。 49 还有约但河东的全亚拉巴，直到亚拉巴海，靠近 ? 斯迦山根。
