1Kommt her, ihr Völker, und hört! / Ihr Völkerstämme, hört aufmerksam zu! / Es höre die Erde und was auf ihr lebt, / der Erdkreis und was ihm entsprosst!2Jahwe ist zornig auf die Völker, / sein Grimm richtet sich gegen ihr Heer. / Er hat sie alle unter den Bann[1] gestellt / und gibt sie zum Abschlachten frei.3Die Erschlagenen wirft man hinaus. / Der Gestank ihrer Leichen steigt auf. / Die Berge sind von ihrem Blut durchtränkt.4Selbst die Gestirne vergehen, und der Himmel rollt sich ein wie ein Buch.[2] / Sein ganzes Heer welkt ab / wie das Laub am Weinstock, / wie das Verwelkende am Feigenbaum.5Am Himmel erscheint mein Schwert, / auf Edom fährt es herab, / auf das Volk, das im Gericht dem Bann verfallen ist.6Das Schwert Jahwes ist voller Blut, / es trieft vom Fett der Lämmer, / vom Blut der Böcke und von ihrem Nierenfett. / Denn ein Schlachtfest hält Jahwe in Bozra,[3] / ein großes Schlachten in Edoms Land.7Auch Wildochsen stürzen mit ihnen hin, / der junge und der starke Stier. / Der Boden ist von Blut durchtränkt, / die Erde trieft von ihrem Fett.8Das ist der Vergeltungstag Jahwes, / ein Jahr der Abrechnung für Zions Recht.9Edoms Bäche verwandeln sich in Pech, / zu Schwefel wird sein Staub. / Das ganze Land wird brennender Teer.10Tag und Nacht erlischt er nicht, / ewig steigt sein Rauch empor. / Für alle Zeiten verödet das Land, / für immer und ewig zieht niemand hindurch.11Pelikan und Igel besitzen es nun, / Eule und Rabe wohnen darin. / Hier ist die Messschnur „Öde“ gespannt, / und das Senkblei „Leere“[4] hängt herab.12Kein Fürst ruft je wieder ein Königtum aus, / seine Oberen sind alle dahin.13In den Palästen wuchert Dornengesträuch, / Nesseln und Disteln zwischen den Mauern. / Schakale und Strauße bevölkern das Land.14Wüstentiere und Wildhunde treffen sich dort, / ein Dämon ruft hier dem anderen zu. / Selbst die Lilit[5] findet sich ein und ruht sich hier aus.15Die Sprungnatter legt ihre Eier dort ab und brütet sie aus, / hier sammeln sich Geier in großer Schar.16Forscht nach im Buch Jahwes und lest! / Nicht eins von diesen Wesen wird vermisst, alle sind sie da! / Denn so hat es Jahwe befohlen; / sein Geist hat sie alle zusammengebracht.17Er selbst hat ihnen das Land vermessen, / durchs Los ihr Stück ihnen zugeteilt. / Für immer ist es ihr Besitz, / für alle Zeiten wohnen sie dort.

For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom. (Jes 63,1)7Wild oxen shall fall with them, and young steers with the mighty bulls. Their land shall drink its fill of blood, and their soil shall be gorged with fat. (4Mo 23,22; Ps 22,12; Jes 47,1)8For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (Ps 137,7; Jes 61,2; Jes 63,4)9And the streams of Edom[2] shall be turned into pitch, and her soil into sulfur; her land shall become burning pitch. (5Mo 29,23)10Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever. He shall stretch the line of confusion[4] over it, and the plumb line of emptiness. (2Kön 21,13; Jes 14,23; Jes 24,10; Kla 2,8; Am 7,7; Zef 2,14; Offb 18,2)12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom, and all its princes shall be nothing.13Thorns shall grow over its strongholds, nettles and thistles in its fortresses. It shall be the haunt of jackals, an abode for ostriches.[5] (Ps 44,19; Jes 13,22; Jes 32,13; Mal 1,3)14And wild animals shall meet with hyenas; the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; indeed, there the night bird[6] settles and finds for herself a resting place. (Jes 13,21)15There the owl nests and lays and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow; indeed, there the hawks are gathered, each one with her mate. (5Mo 14,13)16Seek and read from the book of the Lord: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the Lord has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.17He has cast the lot for them; his hand has portioned it out to them with the line; they shall possess it forever; from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.
