1Naquela noite, toda a comunidade começou a chorar em alta voz.2Todos os israelitas queixaram-se contra Moisés e contra Arão, e toda a comunidade lhes disse: “Quem dera tivéssemos morrido no Egito! Ou neste deserto!3Por que o SENHOR está nos trazendo para esta terra? Só para nos deixar cair à espada? Nossas mulheres e nossos filhos serão tomados como despojo de guerra. Não seria melhor voltar para o Egito?”4E disseram uns aos outros: “Escolheremos um chefe e voltaremos para o Egito!”5Então Moisés e Arão prostraram-se com o rosto em terra, diante de toda a assembleia dos israelitas.6Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, dentre os que haviam observado a terra, rasgaram as suas vestes7e disseram a toda a comunidade dos israelitas: “A terra que percorremos em missão de reconhecimento é excelente.8Se o SENHOR se agradar de nós, ele nos fará entrar nessa terra, onde há leite e mel com fartura, e a dará a nós.9Somente não sejam rebeldes contra o SENHOR. E não tenham medo do povo da terra, porque nós os devoraremos como se fossem pão. A proteção deles se foi, mas o SENHOR está conosco. Não tenham medo deles!”10Mas a comunidade toda falou em apedrejá-los. Então a glória do SENHOR apareceu a todos os israelitas na Tenda do Encontro.11E o SENHOR disse a Moisés: “Até quando este povo me tratará com pouco caso? Até quando se recusará a crer em mim, apesar de todos os sinais que realizei entre eles?12Eu os ferirei com praga e os destruirei, mas farei de você uma nação maior e mais forte do que eles”.13Moisés disse ao SENHOR: “Então os egípcios ouvirão que pelo teu poder fizeste este povo sair dentre eles,14e falarão disso aos habitantes desta terra. Eles ouviram que tu, ó SENHOR, estás com este povo e que te veem face a face, SENHOR, e que a tua nuvem paira sobre eles, e que vais adiante deles numa coluna de nuvem de dia e numa coluna de fogo de noite.15Se exterminares este povo, as nações que ouvirem falar do que fizeste dirão:16‘O SENHOR não conseguiu levar esse povo à terra que lhes prometeu em juramento; por isso os matou no deserto’.17“Mas agora, que a força do Senhor se manifeste, segundo prometeste:18‘O SENHOR é muito paciente e grande em fidelidade e perdoa a iniquidade e a rebelião, se bem que não deixa o pecado sem punição e castiga os filhos pela iniquidade dos pais até a terceira e quarta gerações’.19Segundo a tua grande fidelidade, perdoa a iniquidade deste povo, como a este povo tens perdoado desde que saíram do Egito até agora”.20O SENHOR respondeu: “Eu o perdoei, conforme você pediu.21No entanto, juro pela glória do SENHOR, que enche toda a terra,22que nenhum dos que viram a minha glória e os sinais milagrosos que realizei no Egito e no deserto e me puseram à prova e me desobedeceram dez vezes—23nenhum deles chegará a ver a terra que prometi com juramento aos seus antepassados. Ninguém que me tratou com desprezo a verá.24Mas, como o meu servo Calebe tem outro espírito e me segue com integridade, eu o farei entrar na terra que foi observar, e seus descendentes a herdarão.25Visto que os amalequitas e os cananeus habitam nos vales, amanhã deem meia-volta e partam em direção ao deserto pelo caminho que vai para o mar Vermelho”.
O Castigo do Povo
26Disse mais o SENHOR a Moisés e a Arão:27“Até quando esta comunidade ímpia se queixará contra mim? Tenho ouvido as queixas desses israelitas murmuradores.28Diga-lhes: Juro pelo meu nome, declara o SENHOR, que farei a vocês tudo o que pediram:29Cairão neste deserto os cadáveres de todos vocês, de vinte anos para cima, que foram contados no recenseamento e que se queixaram contra mim.30Nenhum de vocês entrará na terra que, com mão levantada, jurei dar-lhes para sua habitação, exceto Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Num.31Mas, quanto aos seus filhos, sobre os quais vocês disseram que seriam tomados como despojo de guerra, eu os farei entrar para desfrutarem a terra que vocês rejeitaram.32Os cadáveres de vocês, porém, cairão neste deserto.33Seus filhos serão pastores[1] aqui durante quarenta anos, sofrendo pela infidelidade de vocês, até que o último cadáver de vocês seja destruído no deserto. (Nm 32:13)34Durante quarenta anos vocês sofrerão a consequência dos seus pecados e experimentarão a minha rejeição; cada ano corresponderá a cada um dos quarenta dias em que vocês observaram a terra.35Eu, o SENHOR, falei, e certamente farei essas coisas a toda esta comunidade ímpia, que conspirou contra mim. Encontrarão o seu fim neste deserto; aqui morrerão”.36Os homens enviados por Moisés em missão de reconhecimento daquela terra voltaram e fizeram toda a comunidade queixar-se contra ele ao espalharem um relatório negativo;37esses homens responsáveis por espalhar o relatório negativo sobre a terra morreram subitamente de praga perante o SENHOR.38De todos os que foram observar a terra, somente Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, sobreviveram.39Quando Moisés transmitiu essas palavras a todos os israelitas, eles choraram amargamente.40Na madrugada seguinte, subiram para o alto da região montanhosa e disseram: “Subiremos ao lugar que o SENHOR prometeu, pois cometemos pecado”.41Moisés, porém, disse: “Por que vocês estão desobedecendo à ordem do SENHOR? Isso não terá sucesso!42Não subam, porque o SENHOR não está com vocês. Vocês serão derrotados pelos inimigos,43pois os amalequitas e os cananeus os enfrentarão ali, e vocês cairão à espada. Visto que deixaram de seguir o SENHOR, ele não estará com vocês”.44Apesar disso, eles subiram desafiadoramente ao alto da região montanhosa, mas nem Moisés nem a arca da aliança do SENHOR saíram do acampamento.45Então os amalequitas e os cananeus que lá viviam desceram, derrotaram-nos e os perseguiram até Hormá.
1Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. (Nm 11:4)2And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! (Ex 15:24; Ex 16:2; Ex 17:3; Nm 14:27; Nm 14:29; Nm 14:33; Nm 16:41; Js 9:18; Sl 106:25)3Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” (Nm 14:31)4And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” (Dt 17:16; Ne 9:17; At 7:39)5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (Nm 16:4; Nm 16:22; Nm 20:6)6And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes (Nm 13:6; Nm 13:8; Nm 14:30)7and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. (Nm 13:27; Dt 1:25)8If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. (Ex 3:8; Dt 10:15; 2 Sm 22:20; 1 Rs 10:9; Sl 18:19; Sl 22:8; Is 62:4)9Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.” (Nm 24:8; Dt 7:18; Dt 20:3; Js 22:16; Js 22:18; Js 22:19; Js 22:29; Sl 14:4; Sl 74:14)10Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. (Ex 17:4; Lv 9:23)11And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? (Nm 14:23; Nm 16:30; Dt 1:32; Dt 9:23; Sl 78:22; Sl 78:32; Sl 106:24; Jo 12:37; Hb 3:18)12I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” (Ex 32:10)
Moses Intercedes for the People
13But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, (Ex 32:12; Dt 9:28; Dt 32:27; Sl 106:23; Ez 20:9; Ez 20:14)14and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. (Ex 13:21; Ex 15:14; Js 2:9; Js 2:10; Js 5:1)15Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say,16‘It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ (Dt 9:28; Js 7:9)17And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying,18‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ (Ex 20:5; Ex 34:6; Ex 34:7)19Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.” (Ex 34:9; Sl 78:38; Sl 106:45)
God Promises Judgment
20Then the LORD said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. (Sl 106:23; Tg 5:16)21But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, (Sl 72:19; Hc 2:14)22none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, (Gn 31:7; Dt 1:35; Jó 19:3; Sl 95:11; Sl 106:26; Hb 3:17; Hb 3:18)23shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. (Nm 32:11; Ez 20:15)24But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. (Nm 13:6; Nm 14:6; Nm 32:12; Js 14:8; Js 14:9)25Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.” (Nm 13:29; Nm 14:43; Dt 1:40)26And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,27“How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. (Ex 16:7; Ex 16:12; Nm 14:35)28Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: (Nm 14:2; Nm 14:21; Nm 26:65)29your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, (Ex 30:14; Nm 1:3; Nm 1:45; Nm 26:64; Dt 1:35; 1 Co 10:5; Hb 3:17)30not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. (Gn 1:1; Gn 14:22; Nm 13:6; Nm 14:6)31But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. (Nm 14:3; Dt 1:39; Sl 106:24)32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. (Nm 14:29)33And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. (Nm 32:13; Dt 2:14; Sl 95:10; Sl 107:40; Ez 23:35)34According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ (Nm 13:25; Ez 4:6)35I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.” (Nm 14:27; Nm 23:19)36And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— (Nm 13:32)37the men who brought up a bad report of the land— died by plague before the LORD. (1 Co 10:10; Hb 3:17; Jd 1:5)38Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive. (Nm 13:16; Nm 26:65)
Israel Defeated in Battle
39When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. (Ex 33:4)40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned.” (Dt 1:41)41But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed? (2 Cr 24:20)42Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. (Dt 1:42; Dt 31:17)43For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.” (Nm 13:29; Nm 14:25)44But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp. (Dt 1:43; 1 Sm 4:3)45Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah. (Nm 14:43; Nm 21:3; Dt 1:44; Jz 1:17)
