1 Dentro do peixe, Jonas orou ao SENHOR, o seu Deus. 2 E disse: “Em meu desespero clamei ao SENHOR, e ele me respondeu. Do ventre da morte[1] gritei por socorro, e ouviste o meu clamor. 3 Jogaste-me nas profundezas, no coração dos mares; correntezas formavam um turbilhão ao meu redor; todas as tuas ondas e vagas passaram sobre mim. 4 Eu disse: Fui expulso da tua presença; contudo, olharei de novo para o teu santo templo.[2] 5 As águas agitadas me envolveram,[3] o abismo me cercou, as algas marinhas se enrolaram em minha cabeça. 6 Afundei até chegar aos fundamentos dos montes; à terra embaixo, cujas trancas me aprisionaram para sempre. Mas tu trouxeste a minha vida de volta da sepultura, ó SENHOR meu Deus! 7 “Quando a minha vida já se apagava, eu me lembrei de ti, SENHOR, e a minha oração subiu a ti, ao teu santo templo. 8 “Aqueles que acreditam em ídolos inúteis desprezam a misericórdia. 9 Mas eu, com um cântico de gratidão, oferecerei sacrifício a ti. O que eu prometi cumprirei totalmente. A salvação vem do SENHOR”. 10 E o SENHOR deu ordens ao peixe, e ele vomitou Jonas em terra firme.

1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2 saying, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. (Sl 3:4; Sl 118:5; Sl 120:1; Lm 3:55; Lm 3:56) 3 For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. (Sl 42:7; Sl 88:6) 4 Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ (1 Rs 8:35; 1 Rs 8:38; Sl 31:22) 5 The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head (Sl 69:1; Lm 3:54) 6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. 7 When my life was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. (2 Cr 30:27) 8 Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. (2 Rs 17:15; Sl 31:6; Jr 2:5; Jr 2:13) 9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!” (Sl 3:8; Sl 50:14; Os 14:2; Hb 13:15) 10 And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.
