1Tendo terminado de orar, Jesus saiu com os seus discípulos e atravessou o vale do Cedrom. Do outro lado havia um olival, onde entrou com eles.2Ora, Judas, o traidor, conhecia aquele lugar, porque Jesus muitas vezes se reunira ali com os seus discípulos.3Então Judas foi para o olival, levando consigo um destacamento de soldados e alguns guardas enviados pelos chefes dos sacerdotes e fariseus, levando tochas, lanternas e armas.4Jesus, sabendo tudo o que lhe ia acontecer, saiu e lhes perguntou: “A quem vocês estão procurando?”5“A Jesus de Nazaré”, responderam eles. “Sou eu”, disse Jesus. (E Judas, o traidor, estava com eles.)6Quando Jesus disse: “Sou eu”, eles recuaram e caíram por terra.7Novamente lhes perguntou: “A quem procuram?” E eles disseram: “A Jesus de Nazaré”.8Respondeu Jesus: “Já disse a vocês que sou eu. Se vocês estão me procurando, deixem ir embora estes homens”.9Isso aconteceu para que se cumprissem as palavras que ele dissera: “Não perdi nenhum dos que me deste”.10Simão Pedro, que trazia uma espada, tirou-a e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha direita. (O nome daquele servo era Malco.)11Jesus, porém, ordenou a Pedro: “Guarde a espada! Acaso não haverei de beber o cálice que o Pai me deu?”
Jesus é Levado a Anás
12Assim, o destacamento de soldados com o seu comandante e os guardas dos judeus prenderam Jesus. Amarraram-no13e o levaram primeiramente a Anás, que era sogro de Caifás, o sumo sacerdote naquele ano.14Caifás era quem tinha dito aos judeus que seria bom que um homem morresse pelo povo.
Pedro Nega Jesus
15Simão Pedro e outro discípulo estavam seguindo Jesus. Por ser conhecido do sumo sacerdote, este discípulo entrou com Jesus no pátio da casa do sumo sacerdote,16mas Pedro teve que ficar esperando do lado de fora da porta. O outro discípulo, que era conhecido do sumo sacerdote, voltou, falou com a moça encarregada da porta e fez Pedro entrar.17Ela então perguntou a Pedro: “Você não é um dos discípulos desse homem?” Ele respondeu: “Não sou”.18Fazia frio; os servos e os guardas estavam ao redor de uma fogueira que haviam feito para se aquecerem. Pedro também estava em pé com eles, aquecendo-se.
O Sumo Sacerdote Interroga Jesus
19Enquanto isso, o sumo sacerdote interrogou Jesus acerca dos seus discípulos e dos seus ensinamentos.20Respondeu-lhe Jesus: “Eu falei abertamente ao mundo; sempre ensinei nas sinagogas e no templo, onde todos os judeus se reúnem. Nada disse em segredo.21Por que me interrogas? Pergunta aos que me ouviram. Certamente eles sabem o que eu disse”.22Quando Jesus disse isso, um dos guardas que estava perto bateu-lhe no rosto. “Isso é jeito de responder ao sumo sacerdote?”, perguntou ele.23Respondeu Jesus: “Se eu disse algo de mal, denuncie o mal. Mas, se falei a verdade, por que me bateu?”24Então, Anás enviou[1] Jesus, de mãos amarradas, a Caifás, o sumo sacerdote.
Pedro Nega Jesus Mais Duas Vezes
25Enquanto Simão Pedro estava se aquecendo, perguntaram-lhe: “Você não é um dos discípulos dele?” Ele negou, dizendo: “Não sou”.26Um dos servos do sumo sacerdote, parente do homem cuja orelha Pedro cortara, insistiu: “Eu não o vi com ele no olival?”27Mais uma vez Pedro negou, e no mesmo instante um galo cantou.
Jesus diante de Pilatos
28Em seguida, os judeus levaram Jesus da casa de Caifás para o Pretório[2]. Já estava amanhecendo e, para evitar contaminação cerimonial, os judeus não entraram no Pretório; pois queriam participar da Páscoa.29Então Pilatos saiu para falar com eles e perguntou: “Que acusação vocês têm contra este homem?”30Responderam eles: “Se ele não fosse criminoso, não o teríamos entregado a ti”.31Pilatos disse: “Levem-no e julguem-no conforme a lei de vocês”. “Mas nós não temos o direito de executar ninguém”, protestaram os judeus.32Isso aconteceu para que se cumprissem as palavras que Jesus tinha dito, indicando a espécie de morte que ele estava para sofrer.33Pilatos então voltou para o Pretório, chamou Jesus e lhe perguntou: “Você é o rei dos judeus?”34Perguntou-lhe Jesus: “Essa pergunta é tua, ou outros te falaram a meu respeito?”35Respondeu Pilatos: “Acaso sou judeu? Foram o seu povo e os chefes dos sacerdotes que o entregaram a mim. Que foi que você fez?”36Disse Jesus: “O meu Reino não é deste mundo. Se fosse, os meus servos lutariam para impedir que os judeus me prendessem. Mas agora o meu Reino não é daqui”.37“Então, você é rei!”, disse Pilatos. Jesus respondeu: “Tu dizes que sou rei. De fato, por esta razão nasci e para isto vim ao mundo: para testemunhar da verdade. Todos os que são da verdade me ouvem”.38“Que é a verdade?”, perguntou Pilatos. Ele disse isso e saiu novamente para onde estavam os judeus, e disse: “Não acho nele motivo algum de acusação.39Contudo, segundo o costume de vocês, devo libertar um prisioneiro por ocasião da Páscoa. Querem que eu solte ‘o rei dos judeus’?”40Eles, em resposta, gritaram: “Não, ele não! Queremos Barrabás!” Ora, Barrabás era um bandido.

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas
12So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[4] arrested Jesus and bound him.13First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. (Mt 26:3; Mt 26:57; Lc 3:2; Jo 18:24; Jo 18:28; At 4:6)14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. (Jo 11:50)
Peter Denies Jesus
15Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, (Mt 26:58; Mc 14:54; Lc 22:54)16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. (Mt 26:69; Mc 14:66; Lc 22:55)17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” (At 12:13)18Now the servants[5] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. (Mc 14:54; Jo 18:25)
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. (Mt 26:59; Mc 14:55; Lc 22:63)20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. (Is 45:19; Is 48:16; Mt 26:55; Jo 7:4; Jo 7:26; Jo 8:26)21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”22When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” (At 23:4)23Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”24Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. (Jo 18:13)
Peter Denies Jesus Again
25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” (Mt 26:71; Mc 14:69; Lc 22:58)26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” (Jo 18:1; Jo 18:10)27Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. (Jo 13:38)
Jesus Before Pilate
28Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.[6] It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. (Mt 27:2; Mt 27:27; Mc 15:1; Lc 23:1; Jo 11:55; Jo 18:24; Jo 18:33; Jo 19:9; Jo 19:14; At 10:28; At 11:3)29So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” (Mt 27:11; Mc 15:2; Lc 23:2)30They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”31Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” (Jo 19:6)32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. (Mt 20:19; Mt 26:2; Mc 10:33; Lc 18:32; Jo 12:32; Jo 13:18)
My Kingdom Is Not of This World
33So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” (Jo 19:9; Jo 19:12)34Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” (Dn 2:44; Dn 7:14; Dn 7:27; Mt 26:53; Lc 17:21; Jo 6:15; Jo 8:23; Jo 15:19; Jo 17:14; Jo 17:16; Jo 19:16; 1 Jo 2:16; 1 Jo 4:5)37Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” (Lc 22:70; Jo 3:11; Jo 3:32; Jo 5:31; Jo 8:13; Jo 8:18; Jo 8:47; Jo 10:16; Jo 10:27; Jo 12:27; Jo 16:28; Rm 14:9; 1 Jo 2:21; 1 Jo 3:19; 1 Jo 4:6)38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. (Lc 23:4; Jo 19:4; Jo 19:6)39But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” (Mt 27:15; Mt 27:20; Mc 15:6; Lc 23:18)40They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.[7] (At 3:14)
