1Esta é a palavra que o SENHOR dirigiu a Jeremias acerca da seca:2“Judá pranteia, as suas cidades estão definhando e os seus habitantes se lamentam, prostrados no chão! O grito de Jerusalém sobe.3Os nobres mandam os seus servos à procura de água; eles vão às cisternas mas nada encontram. Voltam com os potes vazios e, decepcionados e desesperados, cobrem a cabeça.4A terra nada produziu, porque não houve chuva; e os lavradores, decepcionados, cobrem a cabeça.5Até mesmo a corça no campo abandona a cria recém-nascida, porque não há capim.6Os jumentos selvagens permanecem nos altos, farejando o vento como os chacais, mas a sua visão falha, por falta de pastagem”.7Embora os nossos pecados nos acusem, age por amor do teu nome, ó SENHOR! Nossas infidelidades são muitas; temos pecado contra ti.8Ó Esperança de Israel, tu que o salvas na hora da adversidade, por que te comportas como um estrangeiro na terra, ou como um viajante que fica somente uma noite?9Por que ages como um homem que foi pego de surpresa, como um guerreiro que não pode salvar? Tu estás em nosso meio, ó SENHOR, e nós pertencemos a ti[1]; não nos abandones!10Assim diz o SENHOR acerca deste povo: “Eles gostam muito de vaguear; não controlam os pés. Por isso o SENHOR não os aceita; agora ele se lembrará da iniquidade deles e os castigará por causa dos seus pecados”.11Então o SENHOR me disse: “Não ore pelo bem-estar deste povo.12Ainda que jejuem, não escutarei o clamor deles; ainda que ofereçam holocaustos[2] e ofertas de cereal, não os aceitarei. Mas eu os destruirei pela guerra, pela fome e pela peste”.13Mas eu disse: Ah, Soberano SENHOR, os profetas estão dizendo a eles: “Vocês não verão a guerra nem a fome; eu lhes darei prosperidade duradoura neste lugar”.14Então o SENHOR me disse: “É mentira o que os profetas estão profetizando em meu nome. Eu não os enviei nem lhes dei ordem nenhuma, nem falei com eles. Eles estão profetizando para vocês falsas visões, adivinhações inúteis e ilusões de suas próprias mentes”.15Por isso, assim diz o SENHOR: “Quanto aos profetas que estão profetizando em meu nome, embora eu não os tenha enviado, e que dizem: ‘Nem guerra nem fome alcançarão esta terra’, aqueles mesmos profetas perecerão pela guerra e pela fome!16E aqueles a quem estão profetizando serão jogados nas ruas de Jerusalém, por causa da fome e da guerra. E não haverá ninguém para sepultá-los, nem para sepultar as suas mulheres, os seus filhos e as suas filhas. Despejarei sobre eles o castigo que merecem.17“Diga-lhes isto: “Que os meus olhos derramem lágrimas, noite e dia sem cessar; pois a minha filha virgem, o meu povo, sofreu um ferimento terrível, um golpe fatal.18Se vou para o campo, vejo os que morreram à espada; se entro na cidade, vejo a devastação da fome. Tanto o profeta como o sacerdote percorrem a terra sem nada compreender[3]”.19Rejeitaste Judá completamente? Desprezaste Sião? Por que nos feriste a ponto de não podermos ser curados? Esperávamos a paz, mas não veio bem algum; esperávamos um tempo de cura, mas há somente terror.20SENHOR, reconhecemos a nossa impiedade e a iniquidade dos nossos pais; temos de fato pecado contra ti.21Por amor do teu nome não nos desprezes; não desonres o teu trono glorioso. Lembra-te da tua aliança conosco e não a quebres.22Entre os ídolos inúteis das nações, existe algum que possa trazer chuva? Podem os céus, por si mesmos, produzir chuvas copiosas? Somente tu o podes, SENHOR, nosso Deus! Portanto, a nossa esperança está em ti, pois tu fazes todas essas coisas.

(Jr 2:24)7“Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O Lord, for your name’s sake; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against you. (Sl 25:11; Jr 2:19; Jr 14:20; Jr 14:21)8O you hope of Israel, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night? (Sl 71:5; Jr 17:13; Jr 50:7)9Why should you be like a man confused, like a mighty warrior who cannot save? Yet you, O Lord, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; do not leave us.” (Ex 29:45; Sl 119:121; Is 59:1; Dn 9:18; Ef 3:15)10Thus says the Lord concerning this people: “They have loved to wander thus; they have not restrained their feet; therefore the Lord does not accept them; now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.” (Os 8:13; Os 9:9)11The Lord said to me: “Do not pray for the welfare of this people. (Jr 7:16)12Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. Lying Prophets
13Then I said: “Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” (Jr 4:10; Jr 6:14)14And the Lord said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds. (Dt 18:20; Jr 5:31; Jr 23:21; Jr 23:26; Jr 27:9; Jr 27:15; Jr 29:8; Ez 13:6; Mt 7:15; Mc 13:22)15Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. (Jr 14:12; Jr 14:14; Jr 23:34)16And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them. (Sl 79:3)17“You shall say to them this word: ‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound, with a very grievous blow. (Jr 8:21; Jr 10:19; Jr 13:17; Jr 30:12)18If I go out into the field, behold, those pierced by the sword! And if I enter the city, behold, the diseases of famine! For both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land and have no knowledge.’” (Jr 5:31; Ez 7:15)19Have you utterly rejected Judah? Does your soul loathe Zion? Why have you struck us down so that there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror. (Jr 8:15; Jr 15:18; Lm 5:22)20We acknowledge our wickedness, O Lord, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against you. (Sl 106:6; Dn 9:5; Dn 9:8)21Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake; do not dishonor your glorious throne; remember and do not break your covenant with us. (Lv 26:42; Sl 106:45; Jr 14:7)22Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O Lord our God?
