1Algunos que habían llegado de Judea a Antioquía se pusieron a enseñar a los hermanos: «A menos que os circuncidéis, conforme a la tradición de Moisés, no podéis ser salvos».2Esto provocó un altercado y un serio debate de Pablo y Bernabé con ellos. Entonces se decidió que Pablo y Bernabé, y algunos otros creyentes, subieran a Jerusalén para tratar este asunto con los apóstoles y los ancianos.3Enviados por la iglesia, al pasar por Fenicia y Samaria contaron cómo se habían convertido los gentiles. Estas noticias llenaron de alegría a todos los creyentes.4Al llegar a Jerusalén, fueron muy bien recibidos tanto por la iglesia como por los apóstoles y los ancianos, a quienes informaron de todo lo que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos.5Entonces intervinieron algunos creyentes que pertenecían a la secta de los fariseos y afirmaron: ―Es necesario circuncidar a los gentiles y exigirles que obedezcan la ley de Moisés.6Los apóstoles y los ancianos se reunieron para examinar este asunto.7Después de una larga discusión, Pedro tomó la palabra: ―Hermanos, sabéis que desde un principio Dios me escogió de entre vosotros para que por mi boca los gentiles oyeran el mensaje del evangelio y creyeran.8Dios, que conoce el corazón humano, mostró que los aceptaba dándoles el Espíritu Santo, lo mismo que a nosotros.9Sin hacer distinción alguna entre nosotros y ellos, purificó sus corazones por la fe.10Entonces, ¿por qué tratáis ahora de provocar a Dios poniendo sobre el cuello de esos discípulos un yugo que ni nosotros ni nuestros antepasados hemos podido soportar?11¡No puede ser! Más bien, como ellos, creemos que somos salvos[1] por la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesús.12Toda la asamblea guardó silencio para escuchar a Bernabé y a Pablo, que les contaron las señales y prodigios que Dios había hecho por medio de ellos entre los gentiles.13Cuando terminaron, Jacobo tomó la palabra y dijo: ―Hermanos, escuchadme.14Simón[2] nos ha expuesto cómo Dios desde el principio tuvo a bien escoger de entre los gentiles un pueblo para honra de su nombre.15Con esto concuerdan las palabras de los profetas, tal como está escrito:16»“Después de esto volveré y reedificaré la choza caída de David. Reedificaré sus ruinas, y la restauraré,17para que busque al Señor el resto de la humanidad, todas las naciones que llevan mi nombre.18Así dice el Señor, que hace estas cosas” conocidas desde tiempos antiguos.[3] (Am 9:11; Am 9:12)19»Por lo tanto, yo considero que debemos dejar de ponerles trabas a los gentiles que se convierten a Dios.20Más bien debemos escribirles que se abstengan de lo contaminado por los ídolos, de la inmoralidad sexual, de la carne de animales estrangulados y de sangre.21En efecto, desde tiempos antiguos Moisés siempre ha tenido en cada ciudad quien lo predique y lo lea en las sinagogas todos los sábados».
Carta del concilio a los creyentes gentiles
22Entonces los apóstoles y los ancianos, de común acuerdo con toda la iglesia, decidieron escoger a algunos de ellos y enviarlos a Antioquía con Pablo y Bernabé. Escogieron a Judas, llamado Barsabás, y a Silas, que tenían buena reputación entre los hermanos.23Con ellos mandaron la siguiente carta: Los apóstoles y los ancianos, a nuestros hermanos gentiles en Antioquía, Siria y Cilicia: Saludos.24Nos hemos enterado de que algunos de los nuestros, sin nuestra autorización, os han inquietado, alarmándoos con lo que os han dicho.25Así que de común acuerdo hemos decidido escoger a algunos hombres y enviarlos a vosotros con nuestros queridos hermanos Pablo y Bernabé,26quienes han arriesgado su vida por el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.27Por tanto, os enviamos a Judas y a Silas para que os confirmen personalmente lo que os escribimos.28Nos pareció bien al Espíritu Santo y a nosotros no imponeros ninguna carga aparte de los siguientes requisitos:29abstenerse de lo sacrificado a los ídolos, de sangre, de la carne de animales estrangulados y de la inmoralidad sexual. Bien haréis si evitáis estas cosas. Con nuestros mejores deseos.30Después de despedirse, bajaron a Antioquía, donde reunieron a la congregación y entregaron la carta.31Los creyentes la leyeron y se alegraron por su mensaje alentador.32Judas y Silas, que también eran profetas, hablaron extensamente para animarlos y fortalecerlos.33-34Después de pasar algún tiempo allí, los hermanos los despidieron en paz, para que regresaran a quienes los habían enviado.[4]35Pablo y Bernabé permanecieron en Antioquía, enseñando y anunciando la palabra del Señor en compañía de muchos otros.
Desacuerdo entre Pablo y Bernabé
36Algún tiempo después, Pablo dijo a Bernabé: «Volvamos a visitar a los creyentes en todas las ciudades en donde hemos anunciado la palabra del Señor, y veamos cómo están».37Resulta que Bernabé quería llevar con ellos a Juan Marcos,38pero a Pablo no le pareció prudente llevarlo, porque los había abandonado en Panfilia y no había seguido con ellos en el trabajo.39Se produjo entre ellos un conflicto tan serio que acabaron por separarse. Bernabé se llevó a Marcos y se embarcó rumbo a Chipre,40mientras que Pablo escogió a Silas. Después de que los hermanos lo encomendaron a la gracia del Señor, Pablo partió41y viajó por Siria y Cilicia, consolidando a las iglesias.

(Hch 15:2; Hch 15:3; Hch 21:17)5But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” (Hch 15:1; Hch 24:5; Gl 5:3)6The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. (Hch 15:4; Hch 15:12; Hch 15:25)7And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. (Hch 12:17)14Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. (Dt 7:6; Is 43:21; Hch 15:7; Hch 18:10; Ro 9:24)15And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,16“‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, (Jer 12:15; Am 9:11)17that the remnant[2] of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things (Is 43:7; Jer 14:9; Dn 9:19; Hch 17:27)18known from of old.’ (Is 45:21)19Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, (Hch 14:15; Hch 15:28)20but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. (Lv 3:17; Ez 4:13; Dn 1:8; Mal 1:7; Mal 1:12; Hch 15:29; Hch 21:25; 1 Co 6:18; 1 Co 10:7; Ap 2:14; Ap 2:20)21For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.” (Hch 13:15; Hch 13:27; 2 Co 3:14)
The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers
22Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They sent Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, leading men among the brothers, (Hch 1:23; Hch 15:1; Hch 15:2; 1 P 5:12)23with the following letter: “The brothers, both the apostles and the elders, to the brothers[3] who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greetings. (Hch 15:22; Hch 23:26; Stg 1:1; 2 Jn 1:10)24Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you[4] with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, (Hch 15:1; Gl 1:7; Gl 2:4; Gl 5:10; Gl 5:12; Tit 1:10)25it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, (Hch 1:14; 2 P 3:15)26men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Hch 9:23; Hch 14:19; Hch 20:24; Hch 21:13; 2 Co 4:11; 1 Jn 3:16)27We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who themselves will tell you the same things by word of mouth. (Hch 15:22; Hch 15:32)28For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements: (Jn 16:13; Hch 5:32; Hch 15:8; Hch 15:10; Hch 15:19; 1 Co 7:40; Ap 2:24)29that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell.” (Hch 15:20; Hch 21:25; 1 Co 8:1; 1 Co 8:4; 1 Co 8:7; 1 Co 8:10; 1 Co 10:19; Ap 2:14; Ap 2:20)30So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch, and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter.31And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement.32And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words. (Hch 13:1; Hch 14:22; Hch 15:1)33And after they had spent some time, they were sent off in peace by the brothers to those who had sent them.[5] (Gn 26:29; Hch 15:32; 1 Co 16:11; Heb 11:31)35But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also. Paul and Barnabas Separate
36And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.” (Hch 13:4; Hch 13:13; Hch 13:51; Hch 14:6; Hch 14:24; Hch 15:32)37Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark. (Hch 12:12)38But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. (Hch 13:13)39And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, (Hch 17:16; Col 4:10)40but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. (Hch 11:23; Hch 14:26; Hch 15:1; Hch 15:11; Ro 16:20)41And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches. (Hch 15:32; Hch 16:5)
