La copa de José

1 Más tarde, José ordenó al mayordomo de su casa: «Llena con todo el alimento que les quepa los costales de estos hombres, y pon en sus bolsas el dinero de cada uno de ellos. 2 Luego mete mi copa de plata en la bolsa del hermano menor, junto con el dinero que pagó por el alimento.» Y el mayordomo hizo todo lo que José le ordenó. 3 A la mañana siguiente, muy temprano, los hermanos de José fueron enviados de vuelta, junto con sus asnos. 4 Todavía no estaban muy lejos de la ciudad cuando José le dijo al mayordomo de su casa: «¡Anda! ¡Persigue a esos hombres! Cuando los alcances, diles: “¿Por qué me han pagado mal por bien? 5 ¿Por qué han robado la copa que usa mi señor para beber y para adivinar? ¡Esto que han hecho está muy mal!” » 6 Cuando el mayordomo los alcanzó, les repitió esas mismas palabras. 7 Pero ellos respondieron: —¿Por qué nos dice usted tales cosas, mi señor? ¡Lejos sea de nosotros actuar de esa manera! 8 Es más, nosotros le trajimos de vuelta de Canaán el dinero que habíamos pagado, pero que encontramos en nuestras bolsas. ¿Por qué, entonces, habríamos de robar oro o plata de la casa de su señor? 9 Si se encuentra la copa en poder de alguno de nosotros, que muera el que la tenga, y el resto de nosotros seremos esclavos de mi señor. 10 —Está bien —respondió el mayordomo—, se hará como ustedes dicen, pero sólo el que tenga la copa en su poder será mi esclavo; el resto de ustedes quedará libre de todo cargo. 11 En seguida cada uno de ellos bajó al suelo su bolsa y la abrió. 12 El mayordomo revisó cada bolsa, comenzando con la del hermano mayor y terminando con la del menor. ¡Y encontró la copa en la bolsa de Benjamín! 13 Al ver esto, los hermanos de José se rasgaron las vestiduras en señal de duelo y, luego de cargar sus asnos, volvieron a la ciudad. 14 Todavía estaba José en su casa cuando llegaron Judá y sus hermanos. Entonces se postraron rostro en tierra, 15 y José les dijo: —¿Qué manera de portarse es ésta? ¿Acaso no saben que un hombre como yo puede adivinar? 16 —¡No sabemos qué decirle, mi señor! —contestó Judá—. ¡No hay excusa que valga! ¿Cómo podemos demostrar nuestra inocencia? Dios ha puesto al descubierto la maldad de sus siervos. Aquí nos tiene usted: somos sus esclavos, nosotros y el que tenía la copa. 17 —¡Jamás podría yo actuar de ese modo! —respondió José—. Sólo será mi esclavo el que tenía la copa en su poder. En cuanto a ustedes, regresen tranquilos a la casa de su padre. 18 Entonces Judá se acercó a José para decirle: —Mi señor, no se enoje usted conmigo, pero le ruego que me permita hablarle en privado. Para mí, usted es tan importante como el faraón. 19 Cuando mi señor nos preguntó si todavía teníamos un padre o algún otro hermano, 20 nosotros le contestamos que teníamos un padre anciano, y un hermano que le nació a nuestro padre en su vejez. Nuestro padre quiere muchísimo a este último porque es el único que le queda de la misma madre, ya que el otro murió. 21 Entonces usted nos obligó a traer a este hermano menor para conocerlo. 22 Nosotros le dijimos que el joven no podía dejar a su padre porque, si lo hacía, seguramente su padre moriría. 23 Pero usted insistió y nos advirtió que, si no traíamos a nuestro hermano menor, nunca más seríamos recibidos en su presencia. 24 Entonces regresamos adonde vive mi padre, su siervo, y le informamos de todo lo que usted nos había dicho. 25 Tiempo después nuestro padre nos dijo: “Vuelvan otra vez a comprar un poco de alimento.” 26 Nosotros le contestamos: “No podemos ir si nuestro hermano menor no va con nosotros. No podremos presentarnos ante hombre tan importante, a menos que nuestro hermano menor nos acompañe.” 27 Mi padre, su siervo, respondió: Üstedes saben que mi esposa me dio dos hijos. 28 Uno desapareció de mi lado, y no he vuelto a verlo. Con toda seguridad fue despedazado por las fieras. 29 Si también se llevan a éste, y le pasa alguna desgracia, ¡ustedes tendrán la culpa de que este pobre viejo se muera de tristeza!” 30 »Así que, si yo regreso a mi padre, su siervo, y el joven, cuya vida está tan unida a la de mi padre, no regresa con nosotros, 31 seguramente mi padre, al no verlo, morirá, y nosotros seremos los culpables de que nuestro padre se muera de tristeza. 32 Este siervo suyo quedó ante mi padre como responsable del joven. Le dije: “Si no te lo devuelvo, padre mío, seré culpable ante ti toda mi vida.” 33 Por eso, permita usted que yo me quede como esclavo suyo en lugar de mi hermano menor, y que él regrese con sus hermanos. 34 ¿Cómo podré volver junto a mi padre si mi hermano menor no está conmigo? ¡No soy capaz de ver la desgracia que le sobrevendrá a mi padre!

A silver cup in a sack

1 Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: ‘Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack. 2 Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.’ And he did as Joseph said. 3 As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys. 4 They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, ‘Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, “Why have you repaid good with evil? 5 Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.” ’ 6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them. 7 But they said to him, ‘Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that! 8 We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? 9 If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.’ 10 ‘Very well, then,’ he said, ‘let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.’ 11 Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it. 12 Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city. 14 Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him. 15 Joseph said to them, ‘What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?’ 16 ‘What can we say to my lord?’ Judah replied. ‘What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves – we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.’ 17 But Joseph said, ‘Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.’ 18 Then Judah went up to him and said: ‘Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants, “Do you have a father or a brother?” 20 And we answered, “We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.” 21 ‘Then you said to your servants, “Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.” 22 And we said to my lord, “The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.” 23 But you told your servants, “Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.” 24 When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said. 25 ‘Then our father said, “Go back and buy a little more food.” 26 But we said, “We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.” 27 ‘Your servant my father said to us, “You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28 One of them went away from me, and I said, ‘He has surely been torn to pieces.’ And I have not seen him since. 29 If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my grey head down to the grave in misery.” 30 ‘So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, 31 sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the grey head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. 32 Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, “If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!” 33 ‘Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.’
