1Después de eso, Moisés y Aarón se presentaron ante el faraón y le dijeron: —Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Deja ir a mi pueblo para que celebre en el desierto una fiesta en mi honor.”2—¿Y quién es el Señor —respondió el faraón— para que yo le obedezca y deje ir a Israel? ¡Ni conozco al Señor, ni voy a dejar que Israel se vaya!3—El Dios de los hebreos nos ha salido al encuentro —contestaron—. Así que debemos hacer un viaje de tres días, hasta el desierto, para ofrecer sacrificios al Señor nuestro Dios. De lo contrario, podría castigarnos con plagas o matarnos a filo de espada.4—Moisés y Aarón —replicó el rey de Egipto—, ¿por qué distraen al pueblo de sus quehaceres? ¡Vuelvan a sus obligaciones!5Dense cuenta de que es mucha la gente de este país, y ustedes no la dejan trabajar.6Ese mismo día el faraón les ordenó a los capataces y a los jefes de cuadrilla:7«Ya no le den paja a la gente para hacer ladrillos. ¡Que vayan ellos mismos a recogerla!8Pero sigan exigiéndoles la misma cantidad de ladrillos que han estado haciendo. ¡No les reduzcan la cuota! Son unos holgazanes, y por eso me ruegan: “Déjanos ir a ofrecerle sacrificios a nuestro Dios.”9Impónganles tareas más pesadas. Manténganlos ocupados. Así no harán caso de mentiras.»10Los capataces y los jefes de cuadrilla salieron de allí y fueron a decirle al pueblo: «Así dice el faraón: “Ya no voy a darles paja.11Vayan ustedes mismos a recogerla donde la encuentren. Pero eso sí, ¡en nada se les rebajará la tarea!” »12Fue así como el pueblo se esparció por todo Egipto para recoger rastrojo y usarlo en lugar de paja.13Los capataces no dejaban de apremiarlos y decirles: «Cumplan con su tarea diaria, como cuando se les daba paja.»14Además, esos mismos capataces del faraón golpeaban a los jefes de cuadrilla israelitas que ellos mismos habían nombrado, y les preguntaban: «¿Por qué ni ayer ni hoy cumplieron con su cuota de ladrillos, como antes lo hacían?»15Los jefes de cuadrilla israelitas fueron entonces a quejarse ante el faraón. Le dijeron: —¿Por qué Su Majestad trata así a sus siervos?16¡Ya ni paja recibimos! A pesar de eso, ¡se nos exige hacer ladrillos y, como si fuera poco, se nos golpea! ¡La gente de Su Majestad no está actuando bien!17—¡Haraganes, haraganes! —exclamó el faraón—. ¡Eso es lo que son! Por eso andan diciendo: “Déjanos ir a ofrecerle sacrificios al Señor.”18Ahora, ¡vayan a trabajar! No se les va a dar paja, pero tienen que entregar su cuota de ladrillos.19Los jefes de cuadrilla israelitas se dieron cuenta de que estaban en un aprieto cuando se les dijo que la cuota diaria de ladrillos no se les iba a rebajar.20Así que al encontrarse con Moisés y Aarón, que los estaban esperando a la salida,21les dijeron: «¡Que el Señor los examine y los juzgue! ¡Por culpa de ustedes somos unos apestados ante el faraón y sus siervos! ¡Ustedes mismos les han puesto la espada en la mano, para que nos maten!»
Dios promete liberación
22Moisés se volvió al Señor y le dijo: —¡Ay, Señor! ¿Por qué tratas tan mal a este pueblo? ¿Para esto me enviaste?23Desde que me presenté ante el faraón y le hablé en tu nombre, no ha hecho más que maltratar a este pueblo, que es tu pueblo. ¡Y tú no has hecho nada para librarlo!
1Afterwards Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.” ’2Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.’3Then they said, ‘The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.’4But the king of Egypt said, ‘Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labour? Get back to your work!’5Then Pharaoh said, ‘Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.’6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people:7‘You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, “Let us go and sacrifice to our God.”9Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.’10Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, ‘This is what Pharaoh says: “I will not give you any more straw.11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.” ’12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, ‘Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.’14And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, ‘Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?’15Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: ‘Why have you treated your servants this way?16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, “Make bricks!” Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.’17Pharaoh said, ‘Lazy, that’s what you are – lazy! That is why you keep saying, “Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.”18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.’19The Israelite overseers realised they were in trouble when they were told, ‘You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.’20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,21and they said, ‘May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.’
God promises deliverance
22Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.’
