1Así mismo, esposas, sométanse a sus esposos, de modo que si algunos de ellos no creen en la palabra, puedan ser ganados más por el comportamiento de ustedes que por sus palabras,2al observar su conducta íntegra y respetuosa.3Que la belleza de ustedes no sea la externa, que consiste en adornos tales como peinados ostentosos, joyas de oro y vestidos lujosos.4Que su belleza sea más bien la incorruptible, la que procede de lo íntimo del corazón y consiste en un espíritu suave y apacible. Ésta sí que tiene mucho valor delante de Dios.5Así se adornaban en tiempos antiguos las santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, cada una sumisa a su esposo.6Tal es el caso de Sara, que obedecía a Abraham y lo llamaba su señor. Ustedes son hijas de ella si hacen el bien y viven sin ningún temor.7De igual manera, ustedes esposos, sean comprensivos en su vida conyugal, tratando cada uno a su esposa con respeto, ya que como mujer es más delicada,[1] y ambos son herederos del grato don de la vida. Así nada estorbará las oraciones de ustedes.
Sufriendo por hacer el bien
8En fin, vivan en armonía los unos con los otros; compartan penas y alegrías, practiquen el amor fraternal, sean compasivos y humildes.9No devuelvan mal por mal ni insulto por insulto; más bien, bendigan, porque para esto fueron llamados, para heredar una bendición.10En efecto, «el que quiera amar la vida y gozar de días felices, que refrene su lengua de hablar el mal y sus labios de proferir engaños;11que se aparte del mal y haga el bien; que busque la paz y la siga.12Porque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos, y sus oídos, atentos a sus oraciones; pero el rostro del Señor está contra los que hacen el mal.»[2]13Y a ustedes, ¿quién les va a hacer daño si se esfuerzan por hacer el bien?14¡Dichosos si sufren por causa de la justicia! «No teman lo que ellos temen,[3] ni se dejen asustar.»15Más bien, honren en su corazón a Cristo como Señor. Estén siempre preparados para responder a todo el que les pida razón de la esperanza que hay en ustedes.16Pero háganlo con gentileza y respeto, manteniendo la conciencia limpia, para que los que hablan mal de la buena conducta de ustedes en Cristo, se avergüencen de sus calumnias.17Si es la voluntad de Dios, es preferible sufrir por hacer el bien que por hacer el mal.18Porque Cristo murió por los pecados una vez por todas, el justo por los injustos, a fin de llevarlos a ustedes a Dios. Él sufrió la muerte en su cuerpo, pero el Espíritu hizo que volviera a la vida.[4]19Por medio del Espíritu fue y predicó a los espíritus encarcelados,20que en los tiempos antiguos, en los días de Noé, desobedecieron, cuando Dios esperaba con paciencia mientras se construía el arca. En ella sólo pocas personas, ocho en total, se salvaron mediante el agua,21la cual simboliza el bautismo que ahora los salva también a ustedes. El bautismo no consiste en la limpieza del cuerpo, sino en el compromiso de tener una buena conciencia delante de Dios. Esta salvación es posible por la resurrección de Jesucristo,22quien subió al cielo y tomó su lugar a la derecha de Dios, y a quien están sometidos los ángeles, las autoridades y los poderes.

And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. (Gn 18:12; Pr 3:25)7Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you[1] of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. (Ef 5:25; Col 3:19; 1 Ts 4:4)
Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
8Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. (Ro 12:16; Ef 4:2; Ef 4:32; Heb 13:1)9Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. (Lc 6:28; Ro 12:14; Ro 12:17; 1 Co 4:12; 1 P 2:21; 1 P 2:23)10For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; (Sal 34:12)11let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? (Pr 16:7)14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, (Is 8:12; Mt 5:10; Mt 10:28; Jn 14:1; Jn 14:27; 1 P 2:19; 1 P 3:6; 1 P 4:14; 1 P 4:16)15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, (Is 29:23; Mt 6:9; Col 4:6; 2 Ti 2:25; 1 P 1:17)16having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. (Heb 13:18; 1 P 2:12)17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. (1 P 2:20; 1 P 4:15)18For Christ also suffered[2] once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (Ro 4:25; Ro 5:2; 2 Co 13:4; Col 1:22; Heb 9:26; Heb 9:28; 1 P 2:21; 1 P 4:1; 1 P 4:6)19in which[3] he went and proclaimed[4] to the spirits in prison, (1 P 3:18)20because[5] they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. (Gn 6:3; Gn 6:5; Gn 6:13; Gn 7:1; Gn 7:7; Gn 7:23; Gn 8:18; Heb 11:7; 2 P 2:5)21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (Mr 16:16; Hch 16:33; Ro 6:3; Ro 10:10; Tit 3:5; 1 P 1:3)22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. (Hch 2:33; Ro 8:34; Ro 8:38; 1 Co 15:24; Ef 1:20; Ef 1:21; Col 3:1; Heb 1:3)
