1Poporul a început să murmure în auzul DOMNULUI că‑i merge rău. Când DOMNUL a auzit, S‑a aprins de mânie. Focul DOMNULUI s‑a aprins împotriva lor și a mistuit o parte din marginea taberei.2Atunci poporul a strigat către Moise. Moise s‑a rugat DOMNULUI și focul s‑a stins.3Acelui loc i s‑a pus numele Tabera[1], pentru că focul DOMNULUI s‑a aprins împotriva lor.
Poporul se plânge de mană
4După aceea, adunătura de oameni[2] care era în mijlocul lor a poftit cu nesaț, astfel că și fiii lui Israel s‑au plâns din nou și au zis: „Cine ne va da carne să mâncăm? (Ex 12:38)5Ne aducem aminte de peștele pe care‑l mâncam fără plată în Egipt, de castraveți, de pepeni, de praz, de ceapă și de usturoi.6Acum însă ni s‑a uscat sufletul! Nu mai este nimic înaintea ochilor noștri, decât mana aceasta!“7Mana era ca sămânța de coriandru, iar înfățișarea sa era ca înfățișarea bedeliumului[3]. (Gen 2:12)8Poporul umbla prin împrejurimi și o aduna, o măcina în râșniță sau o pisa într‑o piuă mică, apoi o fierbea în oale și făcea turte din ea. La gust era ca o turtă coaptă cu untdelemn.9Când roua cădea noaptea peste tabără, cădea și mana împreună cu ea.10Moise a auzit poporul plângând, fiecare în clanul lui și la intrarea cortului său. Atunci mânia DOMNULUI s‑a aprins foarte tare. Moise a înțeles că ceea ce făceau ei era un lucru rău.11Moise i‑a zis DOMNULUI: – De ce te‑ai purtat atât de rău cu robul Tău? De ce n‑am găsit bunăvoință înaintea Ta[4] și ai lăsat asupra mea povara acestui popor?12Oare eu am conceput poporul acesta? I‑am născut eu ca să‑mi spui: „Poartă‑i la sân cum poartă o doică un sugar“ înspre țara pe care ai jurat părinților lor că le‑o vei da?13De unde să iau carne pentru tot poporul acesta? Căci vin și plâng înaintea mea, zicând: „Dă‑ne carne să mâncăm!“14Nu pot duce singur acest popor, căci este o povară prea grea pentru mine.15Dacă așa Te porți cu mine, Te rog, mai bine omoară‑mă! Omoară‑mă, dacă am găsit bunăvoință înaintea Ta, și nu mă mai lăsa să‑mi văd nenorocirea!16DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Moise: – Adună la Mine șaptezeci de bărbați dintre bătrânii[5] lui Israel, despre care știi că sunt bătrâni ai poporului și supraveghetorii săi. Să‑i aduci la Cortul Întâlnirii și să stea în picioare acolo împreună cu tine. (Deut 19:12; Deut 21:1; Deut 21:18; Deut 22:13; Deut 25:5; Ios 8:10; 2 Sam 3:17; 2 Sam 5:3; 2 Sam 17:4; 1 Re 20:7)17Eu Mă voi coborî și îți voi vorbi acolo. Voi lua din Duhul Care este peste tine și‑L voi pune peste ei. Ei vor purta povara poporului împreună cu tine și astfel n‑o vei mai purta singur.18Să spui poporului: „Sfințiți‑vă pentru ziua de mâine. Veți mânca și carne, pentru că v‑ați plâns în auzul DOMNULUI, zicând: «Cine ne va da carne să mâncăm? Ne era mai bine în Egipt.» De aceea DOMNUL vă va da carne și veți mânca.19Veți mânca nu o zi, nici două zile, nici cinci zile, nici zece zile, nici douăzeci de zile,20ci o lună întreagă, până vă va ieși pe nări și vă veți scârbi de ea, pentru că L‑ați respins pe DOMNUL, Care este în mijlocul vostru, și ați plâns înaintea Lui, zicând: «De ce am ieșit oare din Egipt?»“21Dar Moise I‑a zis: – Poporul care este cu mine este de șase sute de mii de oameni care merg pe jos[6], și Tu zici: „Le voi da carne ca să mănânce o lună întreagă!“22Sunt destule turme și cirezi să tăiem? Sunt destui pești în mare să prindem?23DOMNUL i‑a răspuns lui Moise: – Este oare mâna DOMNULUI prea scurtă? Vei vedea acum dacă se va împlini sau nu Cuvântul Meu.
Duhul și cei șaptezeci de bătrâni
24Moise a ieșit și a spus poporului cuvintele DOMNULUI. A adunat șaptezeci de bărbați din bătrânii poporului și i‑a pus să stea de jur împrejurul Cortului.25Apoi DOMNUL S‑a coborât în nor, i‑a vorbit lui Moise, a luat din Duhul Care era peste el și L‑a pus peste cei șaptezeci de bătrâni. Când Duhul S‑a așezat peste ei, au profețit. Dar după aceea n‑au mai profețit.26În tabără rămăseseră doi oameni: unul se numea Eldad, iar celălalt Medad. Duhul S‑a așezat și peste ei. Aceștia erau dintre cei scriși, dar nu ieșiseră la Cort, așa că au profețit în tabără.27Un tânăr a alergat și i‑a spus lui Moise: – Eldad și Medad profețesc în tabără.28Iosua, fiul lui Nun, care‑i slujea lui Moise încă din tinerețe, a răspuns și a zis: – Moise, stăpânul meu, oprește‑i!29Dar Moise i‑a răspuns: – Ești gelos pentru mine? Cine n‑ar da ca tot poporul DOMNULUI să fie alcătuit din profeți și DOMNUL să‑Și pună Duhul Său peste ei!30Apoi Moise s‑a întors în tabără împreună cu bătrânii lui Israel.
Prepelițele
31A venit un vânt de la DOMNUL care a adus prepelițe dinspre mare și le‑a făcut să zboare[7] pe lângă tabără, cale de o zi, de o parte și de alta a taberei, la o înălțime de doi coți[8] de la pământ[9].32Toată ziua aceea și toată noaptea și apoi toată ziua următoare, poporul a adunat prepelițe; cel care adunase cel mai puțin avea zece homeri[10]. Ei și le‑au întins în jurul taberei.33Dar în timp ce carnea le era încă între dinți, înainte să o mestece, mânia DOMNULUI s‑a aprins împotriva poporului și DOMNUL a lovit poporul cu o mare urgie.34Acelui loc i s‑a pus numele Chibrot-Hataava[11] pentru că acolo i‑au îngropat pe cei care au poftit.35De la Chibrot-Hataava, poporul a călătorit spre Hațerot și s‑a oprit acolo.
1The people weren’t happy about the hard times they were having. The LORD heard what they were saying. It made him very angry. Then the LORD sent fire on them. It blazed out among the people. It burned some of the outer edges of the camp.2The people cried out to Moses. Then he prayed to the LORD. And the fire died down.3So that place was named Taberah. That’s because fire from the LORD had blazed out among them there.
The Lord sends quail for the people to eat
4Some people with them began to wish for other food. Again the Israelites began to cry out. They said, ‘We wish we had meat to eat.5We remember the fish we ate in Egypt. It didn’t cost us anything. We also remember the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.6But now we’ve lost all interest in eating. We never see anything but this manna!’7The manna was like coriander seeds. It looked like sap from a tree.8The people went around gathering it. Then they ground it up in a small mill they held in their hands. Or they crushed it in a stone bowl. They cooked it in a pot. Or they made loaves out of it. It tasted like something made with olive oil.9When the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna also came down.10Moses heard people from every family crying at the entrances to their tents. The LORD became very angry. So Moses became upset.11He asked the LORD, ‘Why have you brought this trouble on me? Why aren’t you pleased with me? Why have you loaded me down with the troubles of all these people?12Am I like a mother to them? Are they my children? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms? Do I have to carry them the way a nurse carries a baby? Do I have to carry them to the land you promised? You promised the land to their people of long ago.13Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep crying out to me. They say, “Give us meat to eat!”14I can’t carry all these people by myself. The load is too heavy for me.15Is this how you are going to treat me? If you are pleased with me, just put me to death right now. Don’t let me live if I have to see myself destroyed anyway.’16The LORD said to Moses, ‘Bring me 70 of Israel’s elders. Bring men that you know are leaders and officials among the people. Let them come to the tent of meeting. I want them to stand there with you.17I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you. And I will put it on them. They will share the responsibility of these people with you. Then you will not have to carry it alone.18‘Tell the people, “Set yourselves apart for tomorrow. At that time you will eat meat. The LORD heard you when you cried out. You said, ‘We wish we had meat to eat. We were better off in Egypt.’ Now the LORD will give you meat. And you will eat it.19You will not eat it for just one or two days. You will not eat it for just five, ten or 20 days.20Instead, you will eat it for a whole month. You will eat it until it comes out of your noses. You will eat it until you hate it. The LORD is among you. But you have turned your back on him. You have cried out while he was listening. You have said, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’ ” ’21But Moses said to the LORD, ‘Here I am among 600,000 men on the march. And you say, “I will give them meat to eat for a whole month”!22Would they have enough if flocks and herds were killed for them? Would they have enough even if all the fish in the ocean were caught for them?’23The LORD answered Moses, ‘Am I not strong enough? Now you will see whether what I say will come true for you.’24So Moses went out. He told the people what the LORD had said. He gathered 70 of their elders together. He had them stand around the tent of meeting.25Then the LORD came down in the cloud. He spoke with Moses. He took some of the power of the Spirit that was on Moses. And he put it on the 70 elders. When the Spirit came on them, they prophesied. But they didn’t do it again.26Two men had remained in the camp. Their names were Eldad and Medad. They were listed among the elders. But they didn’t go out to the tent of meeting. In spite of that, the Spirit came on them too. So they prophesied in the camp.27A young man ran up to Moses. He said, ‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’28Joshua spoke up. He was the son of Nun. Joshua had been Moses’ helper from the time he was young. He said, ‘Moses! Please stop them!’29But Moses replied, ‘Are you jealous for me? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets. And I wish that the LORD would put his Spirit on them.’30Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.31The LORD sent out a wind. It drove quail in from the Red Sea. It scattered them all around the camp. They were about a metre above the ground. They could be seen in every direction as far as a person could walk in a day.32The people went out all day and gathered quail. They gathered them all night and all the next day. No one gathered less than 2 tonnes. Then they spread the quail out all around the camp.33But while the meat was still in their mouths, the LORD acted. Before the people could swallow it, he became very angry with them. He struck them with a terrible plague.34So the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah. That’s where the bodies of the people who had wished for other food were buried.35From Kibroth Hattaavah the people travelled to Hazeroth. And they stayed there.
