1Cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea DOMNULUI în timp ce Nebucadnețar, împăratul Babilonului, împreună cu toată armata lui, cu toate regatele pământului aflate sub dominația lui și cu toate celelalte popoare luptau împotriva Ierusalimului și împotriva cetăților dimprejurul lui:2„Așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Du‑te la Zedechia, regele lui Iuda, și spune‑i că așa vorbește DOMNUL: ‘Iată, dau această cetate în mâinile împăratului Babilonului și el îi va da foc!3Iar tu nu vei scăpa din mâna lui, ci vei fi prins și predat lui. Îl vei vedea pe împăratul Babilonului față în față, iar el îți va vorbi gură către gură, și astfel vei fi dus în Babilon.’»“4Ascultă Cuvântul DOMNULUI, Zedechia, rege al lui Iuda! Așa vorbește DOMNUL cu privire la tine: „Nu vei muri ucis de sabie,5ci vei muri în pace. Așa cum au ars mirodenii[1] în cinstea părinților tăi, cei dintâi regi care au fost înaintea ta, tot așa vor arde și în cinstea ta și te vor jeli, zicând: «Vai, stăpâne!» Eu Însumi fac această promisiune, zice DOMNUL.“6Profetul Ieremia a spus toate aceste cuvinte lui Zedechia, regele lui Iuda, la Ierusalim,7în timp ce armata împăratului Babilonului lupta împotriva Ierusalimului și împotriva celorlalte cetăți ale lui Iuda care încă mai rezistau – împotriva Lachișului și împotriva Azekăi, căci acestea mai erau singurele cetăți fortificate rămase în Iuda.
Poporul calcă legământul în privința robiei
8Cuvântul spus lui Ieremia din partea DOMNULUI, după ce regele Zedechia a încheiat un legământ cu tot poporul din Ierusalim, prin care vestea eliberarea robilor.9Fiecare trebuia să‑și elibereze robul și roaba, evreu sau evreică. Nimeni nu mai avea voie să țină pe fratele său iudeu în robie.10Toți conducătorii și întregul popor care a intrat în legământ au acceptat fiecare să‑și elibereze robul și roaba și să nu‑i mai țină în robie. Ei au ascultat și le‑au dat drumul.11Dar mai târziu s‑au răzgândit, au adus înapoi robii și roabele pe care îi lăsaseră liberi și i‑au forțat să le fie iarăși robi și roabe.12Atunci Cuvântul DOMNULUI i‑a vorbit lui Ieremia, zicând:13„Așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Eu am încheiat un legământ cu părinții voștri în ziua când i‑am scos din țara Egiptului, din casa robilor, și le‑am zis:14‘După șapte ani, fiecare din voi să îl lase să plece liber pe fratele său evreu, care i se vinde lui ca rob. Șase ani să‑ți slujească, după care să‑l eliberezi!’[2] Însă părinții voștri nu M‑au ascultat și nu și‑au plecat urechea la ce le‑am spus. (Deut 15:12)15Nu demult, voi v‑ați întors și ați făcut ce este drept în ochii Mei, fiecare dintre voi vestind eliberarea semenului său și încheind un legământ înaintea Mea în Casa peste care este chemat Numele Meu.16Dar acum, v‑ați răzgândit și astfel Mi‑ați batjocorit Numele. Fiecare dintre voi și‑a luat înapoi robul și roaba pe care îi lăsase liberi, în voia lor, și i‑ați forțat să devină iarăși robii și roabele voastre.»17De aceea, așa vorbește DOMNUL: «Pentru că nu M‑ați ascultat și nu ați vestit eliberarea pentru fratele și pentru semenul vostru, iată, vestesc și Eu împotriva voastră ‘eliberarea’, zice DOMNUL, ‘eliberarea’ sabiei, a molimei și a foametei. Vă voi face o pricină de groază pentru toate regatele pământului.18Oamenilor care au încălcat legământul Meu și care n‑au împlinit cuvintele legământului pe care l‑au încheiat înaintea Mea, le voi face întocmai ca vițelului pe care l‑au tăiat în două și au trecut printre cele două jumătăți ale lui.19Pe conducătorii lui Iuda și ai Ierusalimului, pe demnitari, pe preoți și pe toți cei din poporul țării care au trecut printre cele două părți ale vițelului,20îi voi da în mâna dușmanilor lor și a celor ce caută să le ia viața. Cadavrele lor vor deveni mâncare pentru păsările cerului și pentru fiarele pământului.21Pe Zedechia, regele lui Iuda, și pe conducătorii lui îi voi da în mâna dușmanilor lor, în mâna celor ce caută să le ia viața, în mâna oștirii împăratului Babilonului, care s‑a retras de la voi.22Iată, voi da poruncă, zice DOMNUL, și‑i voi aduce înapoi la cetatea aceasta. 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: (2 Re 25:1; Ier 1:15; Ier 39:1; Ier 51:28; Ier 52:4)2“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. (2 Re 25:2; Ier 21:10)3You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’ (Ier 32:4)4Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. (Ier 38:17; Ier 38:20; Ier 39:4; Ier 39:7)5You shall die in peace. And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall burn spices for you and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.” (1 Sam 31:12; 2 Cro 16:14; 2 Cro 21:19; Ier 22:18)6Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,7when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, Lachish and Azekah, for these were the only fortified cities of Judah that remained. (Ios 10:3; Ios 10:10; Ios 15:35; 2 Re 18:13; Ier 4:5)8The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to make a proclamation of liberty to them, (Ex 21:2; Lev 25:10; Is 61:1; Ier 34:15; Ier 34:17)9that everyone should set free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, so that no one should enslave a Jew, his brother. (Lev 25:39; Ne 5:8)10And they obeyed, all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant that everyone would set free his slave, male or female, so that they would not be enslaved again. They obeyed and set them free.11But afterward they turned around and took back the male and female slaves they had set free, and brought them into subjection as slaves. (Ier 34:9)12The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord:13“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying, (Ex 20:2)14‘At the end of seven years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; you must set him free from your service.’ But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me. (Ex 21:2; Deut 15:12; Ier 7:24; Ier 7:26; Ier 11:8; Ier 17:23; Ier 25:4; Ier 34:9; Ier 35:15; Ier 44:5)15You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name, (2 Re 23:3; Ier 7:10; Ier 34:8)16but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. (Lev 18:21; Lev 19:12; Ier 34:11)17“Therefore, thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the Lord. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. (Ier 14:12; Ier 15:4; Ier 34:8; Mat 7:2; Gal 6:7; Iac 2:13)18And the men who transgressed my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant that they made before me, I will make them like[1] the calf that they cut in two and passed between its parts— (Gen 15:10; Ier 34:15)19the officials of Judah, the officials of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf. (Ier 29:2)20And I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives. Their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. (Ier 7:33; Ier 22:25)21And Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon which has withdrawn from you. (Ier 34:2; Ier 34:4; Ier 34:8; Ier 37:5; Ier 37:11)22Behold, I will command, declares the Lord, and will bring them back to this city.
