1Sarai, soția lui Avram, nu‑i născuse acestuia copii. Dar ea avea o roabă egipteancă, al cărei nume era Agar.2Sarai i‑a zis lui Avram: „Iată că DOMNUL m‑a oprit să am copii. Intră[1], te rog, la roaba mea. Poate îmi voi zidi o familie prin ea.“ Avram a ascultat‑o pe Sarai.3Astfel, după ce Avram a locuit zece ani în țara Canaan, Sarai, soția lui, a luat‑o pe egipteanca Agar, roaba sa, și i‑a dat‑o soțului ei, Avram, ca să‑i fie soție.4El a intrat la Agar, iar aceasta a rămas însărcinată. Când a văzut că a rămas însărcinată, Agar a privit‑o cu dispreț pe stăpâna sa.5Atunci Sarai i‑a zis lui Avram: – Fie ca răul care mi se face să cadă asupra ta! Ți‑am dat‑o în brațe pe roaba mea, iar când a descoperit că a rămas însărcinată, m‑a privit cu dispreț. DOMNUL să judece între mine și tine!6Avram i‑a răspuns lui Sarai: – Iată, roaba ta este în mâinile tale. Fă‑i ce este bine în ochii tăi! Sarai a asuprit‑o pe Agar, iar aceasta a fugit de la ea.7Îngerul DOMNULUI a găsit‑o în pustie, lângă un izvor de apă – izvorul de lângă drumul care duce la Șur –8și a întrebat‑o: – Agar, roaba lui Sarai, de unde vii și unde mergi? Ea a răspuns: – Fug de Sarai, stăpâna mea.9Îngerul DOMNULUI i‑a zis: – Întoarce‑te la stăpâna ta și supune‑te sub mâna ei.10Îngerul DOMNULUI i‑a zis: – Îți voi înmulți atât de mult sămânța, încât acea mulțime nu va putea fi numărată.11Îngerul DOMNULUI i‑a zis: – Iată că ești însărcinată și vei naște un fiu. Îi vei pune numele Ismael[2], pentru că DOMNUL a auzit despre asuprirea ta.12El va fi un măgar sălbatic al omului. Mâna lui va fi împotriva tuturor și mâna tuturor va fi împotriva lui. Și va locui separat[3] de toți frații[4] săi. (Gen 25:18)13Agar L‑a numit pe DOMNUL Care i‑a vorbit: „Tu ești Dumnezeul Care mă vede“[5], căci ea a zis: „Oare am văzut într-adevăr aici pe Cel Care mă vede?“14De aceea fântâna a fost numită Beer Lahai‑Roi[6]. Iată că ea se află între Kadeș și Bered.15Agar i‑a născut lui Avram un fiu, iar Avram i‑a pus numele Ismael fiului său născut de Agar.16Avram avea optzeci și șase de ani când Agar i l‑a născut pe Ismael.
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. (Gen 15:2; Gen 21:9; Gal 4:24)2And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children[1] by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.3So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. (Gen 12:5)4And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.[2] (1 Sam 1:6)5And Sarai said to Abram, “May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the Lord judge between you and me!” (Gen 31:53; 1 Sam 24:12)6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.7The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. (Gen 25:18; Ex 15:22)8And he said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai.”9The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress and submit to her.”10The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will surely multiply your offspring so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.” (Gen 17:20; Gen 21:18; Gen 25:12)11And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael,[3] because the Lord has listened to your affliction. (Gen 29:32)12He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.” (Gen 21:20; Gen 25:18; Iov 39:5)13So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,”[4] for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”[5] (Gen 32:30; Ex 19:21; Ex 33:20; Jud 13:22)14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi;[6] it lies between Kadesh and Bered. (Gen 14:7; Gen 20:1; Gen 24:62; Gen 25:11; Num 13:26)15And Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
