1David a venit la Nob, la preotul Ahimelek. Acesta i‑a ieșit în întâmpinare tremurând și l‑a întrebat: – De ce ești singur și nu este nimeni cu tine?2David i‑a răspuns preotului Ahimelek: – Regele mi‑a încredințat o misiune, zicându‑mi: „Nimeni să nu știe nimic despre misiunea în care te‑am trimis și pe care ți‑am încredințat‑o.“ Iar cu oamenii mei am hotărât un anume loc de întâlnire.3Acum însă ce ai la îndemână? Dă‑mi vreo cinci pâini sau ce vei găsi.4Dar preotul i‑a răspuns lui David, zicând: – Nu am la îndemână pâine obișnuită. Pot doar să‑ți dau pâine sfințită, însă numai dacă oamenii tăi s‑au ferit de împreunarea cu femei.[1] (Ex 19:15; Lev 24:5)5David i‑a răspuns preotului: – Cu adevărat, femeile au fost ținute departe de noi în aceste trei zile, de când am plecat. Trupurile[2] tinerilor ar fi fost sfinte, chiar dacă ar fi fost o misiune obișnuită. Cu cât mai sfinte vor fi astăzi trupurile lor?6Atunci preotul i‑a dat pâine sfințită pentru că nu se afla acolo alt fel de pâine decât pâinea prezentării, care fusese luată dinaintea DOMNULUI și înlocuită cu pâine caldă în ziua în care o luaseră pe cealaltă.[3] (Lev 24:5)7În acea zi se afla acolo, închis înaintea DOMNULUI, unul dintre slujitorii lui Saul, edomitul Doeg, căpetenia păstorilor lui Saul.8David i‑a zis lui Ahimelek: – Nu este aici, la îndemâna ta, vreo suliță sau vreo sabie? Eu nu mi‑am luat cu mine sabia și armele, pentru că porunca regelui era urgentă.9Preotul i‑a răspuns: – Iată, sabia filisteanului Goliat, pe care l‑ai ucis în valea Ela, este înfășurată într‑o învelitoare, în spatele efodului. Dacă vrei s‑o iei, ia‑o, căci în afară de aceasta, nu este alta. David a zis: – Nu este alta ca ea! Dă‑mi‑o!
Fuga lui David la Gat
10David s‑a ridicat, a fugit de Saul în acea zi și a venit la Achiș, regele Gatului.11Slujitorii lui Achiș i‑au zis acestuia: – Nu este acesta David, regele țării, și nu despre el cântau în timpul dansurilor, zicând: „Saul a ucis miile lui, iar David zecile lui de mii?“12David a pus la inimă aceste cuvinte și s‑a temut foarte tare de Achiș, regele Gatului.13Și, înaintea ochilor lor, și‑a schimbat comportamentul, făcând pe nebunul în mâinile lor: făcea semne pe ușile porții și lăsa să‑i curgă saliva pe barbă.14Atunci Achiș le‑a zis slujitorilor săi: – Iată, vedeți bine că omul este nebun. Pentru ce mi l‑ați adus?15Oare duc eu lipsă de nebuni de l‑ați adus pe acesta să facă nebunii înaintea mea? Să intre oare acesta în casa mea?

Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.”4And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” (Ex 19:15; Ex 25:30; Lev 24:5; Mat 12:3; Mar 2:25; Lu 6:3)5And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?”6So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away. (Lev 24:8; 1 Sam 21:4)7Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen. (1 Sam 22:9)8Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”9And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.” (1 Sam 17:2; 1 Sam 17:51)
David Flees to Gath
10And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath.11And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” (1 Sam 18:7; 1 Sam 29:5)12And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. (Lu 2:19)13So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard.14Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?15Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to behave as a madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?”
