Saul îi învinge pe amoniți și este confirmat drept rege
1Amonitul Nahaș s‑a suit și și‑a așezat tabăra împotriva Iabeșului Ghiladului. Atunci toți bărbații din Iabeș i‑au zis lui Nahaș: – Încheie cu noi un legământ, iar noi îți vom sluji.2Dar Nahaș, amonitul, le‑a răspuns: – Voi încheia un legământ cu voi doar dacă mă lăsați să vă scot la toți ochiul drept, aruncând în acest fel dispreț asupra întregului Israel.3Bătrânii Iabeșului i‑au zis: – Lasă‑ne un răgaz de șapte zile, ca să trimitem mesageri în tot teritoriul lui Israel, iar dacă nu va fi nimeni care să ne izbăvească, vom ieși la tine.4Când au sosit mesagerii în Ghiva lui Saul și au spus aceste cuvinte în auzul poporului, tot poporul și‑a ridicat glasul și a plâns.5Saul tocmai se întorcea de la câmp în urma vitelor și a întrebat: „Ce s‑a întâmplat cu poporul de plânge?“ Atunci ei i‑au povestit despre mesajul bărbaților din Iabeș.6Când a auzit Saul aceste cuvinte, Duhul lui Dumnezeu a venit peste el, iar acesta s‑a aprins de mânie.7A luat o pereche de boi, i‑a tăiat în bucăți și a trimis bucățile, prin mesageri, în toate teritoriile lui Israel, zicând: „Așa se va face cu boii oricui nu îl urmează pe Saul și pe Samuel.“ Groaza DOMNULUI a intrat în popor, astfel că ei au ieșit la luptă ca un singur om.8Când Saul i‑a numărat la Bezek, fiii lui Israel erau trei sute de mii, iar bărbații lui Iuda erau treizeci de mii.9Atunci le‑a zis mesagerilor care au venit: „Așa să spuneți bărbaților din Iabeșul Ghiladului: «Mâine, când va dogori soarele, veți fi izbăviți!»“ Când au sosit mesagerii și le‑au spus aceste lucruri bărbaților din Iabeș, aceștia s‑au bucurat.10Bărbații din Iabeș au zis: „Mâine vom ieși la voi și ne veți face tot ceea ce credeți că este bine.[1]“11În ziua următoare, Saul a împărțit oamenii în trei cete. În timpul străjii de dimineață[2] au pătruns în tabăra lui Amon și i‑au ucis până la arșița zilei. Cei care au supraviețuit s‑au împrăștiat, astfel încât n‑au mai fost lăsați împreună nici măcar doi dintre ei.12Atunci poporul i‑a zis lui Samuel: – Care au fost cei ce n‑au vrut ca Saul să domnească peste noi? Aduceți‑i la noi pe acești oameni, ca să‑i omorâm.13Dar Saul a zis: – Niciun om nu va fi dat la moarte în această zi, pentru că astăzi DOMNUL l‑a izbăvit pe Israel.14Atunci Samuel a zis poporului: – Să mergem la Ghilgal și să reafirmăm acolo monarhia.15Astfel, tot poporul s‑a dus la Ghilgal și l‑au încoronat pe Saul în prezența DOMNULUI. Au adus acolo jertfe de pace[3] înaintea DOMNULUI și s‑au bucurat foarte mult, atât Saul, cât și toți bărbații lui Israel. (1 Sam 10:8)
1Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” (Gen 26:28; Ex 23:32; Ex 34:12; Ex 34:15; Deut 7:2; Jud 21:8; 1 Sam 12:12; 1 Re 20:34; Ez 17:13)2But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” (Gen 34:14; Num 16:14; 1 Sam 17:26)3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.”4When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud. (Jud 2:4; Jud 21:2; 1 Sam 10:26)5Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh.6And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. (1 Sam 10:6; 1 Sam 10:10)7He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. (Jud 19:29; Jud 20:1; Jud 21:5; Jud 21:8; Jud 21:10)8When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. (Jud 1:5; Jud 20:15; 2 Sam 24:9)9And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. (1 Sam 11:13)10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” (1 Sam 11:3)11And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. (Jud 7:16; 1 Sam 31:11)
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” (1 Sam 10:27; Lu 19:27)13But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.” (Ex 14:13; 1 Sam 11:9; 1 Sam 19:5; 2 Sam 19:22)14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.”15So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. (Jud 11:11; 1 Sam 10:8; 1 Sam 10:17; 1 Sam 15:33)
