1Urmăriți dragostea și râvniți după darurile duhovnicești, dar mai ales să profețiți.2Căci cel ce vorbește într‑o altă limbă nu vorbește oamenilor, ci lui Dumnezeu, întrucât nimeni nu‑l înțelege, iar cu duhul[1] spune taine.3Dar cel ce profețește le vorbește oamenilor, pentru zidire, mângâiere și încurajare.4Cel ce vorbește într‑o limbă se zidește pe sine, dar cel ce profețește zidește biserica.5Eu doresc ca toți să vorbiți în alte limbi, dar mai ales să profețiți. Cel ce profețește este mai mare decât cel ce vorbește în alte limbi, în afară de cazul în care acesta din urmă le traduce, pentru ca biserica să primească zidire sufletească.6Acum, fraților, dacă eu vin la voi vorbind în alte limbi, cu ce vă voi ajuta, dacă nu vă voi vorbi fie prin descoperire, fie prin cunoștință, fie prin profeție, fie prin învățătură?7La fel și obiectele neînsuflețite, care scot un sunet, fie un fluier, fie o kithara[2]: dacă nu dau tonuri diferite, cum va ști cineva ce se cântă la fluier sau la kithara? (Apo 14:2)8Dacă trâmbița dă un sunet neclar, cine se va pregăti de război?9Tot astfel și voi: dacă nu rostiți cu limba un cuvânt clar, cum va înțelege cineva ce spuneți? Vă veți trezi vorbind în vânt!10Fără îndoială, există în lume multe feluri de limbi, și niciuna nu este fără sens.11Așadar, dacă eu nu cunosc înțelesul acelei limbi[3], voi fi un barbar[4] pentru cel care vorbește, iar cel care vorbește va fi un barbar pentru mine.12La fel și cu voi: întrucât sunteți plini de zel după daruri duhovnicești, căutați să le aveți din belșug, pentru zidirea bisericii.13De aceea, cel ce vorbește într‑o altă limbă să se roage ca să poată traduce ce spune.14Căci, dacă mă rog într‑o altă limbă, duhul meu se roagă, însă mintea mea este neroditoare.15Așadar, ce voi face? Mă voi ruga cu duhul, dar mă voi ruga și cu mintea, voi cânta laudă cu duhul, dar voi cânta laudă și cu mintea.16Altfel, dacă tu mulțumești doar cu duhul, cum va spune „Amin!“, la mulțumirea ta, cel ce este neștiutor[5], de vreme ce nu știe ce spui?17Căci tu, într-adevăr, mulțumești frumos, însă celălalt nu este zidit.18Eu Îi mulțumesc lui Dumnezeu că vorbesc în alte limbi mai mult decât voi toți,19dar în biserică vreau, mai degrabă, să spun cinci cuvinte cu mintea mea, pentru a‑i învăța pe alții, decât zece mii de cuvinte într‑o altă limbă.20Fraților, nu fiți copii în gândire! Dimpotrivă, în ce privește răutatea fiți copilași, iar în gândire fiți maturi.[6]21În Lege este scris: „În alte limbi și prin buzele altora voi vorbi acestui popor, dar nici atunci nu Mă vor asculta, zice Domnul.“[7] (Is 28:11)22Astfel, limbile sunt un semn nu pentru credincioși, ci pentru necredincioși, în timp ce profeția nu este un semn pentru necredincioși, ci pentru credincioși.23De aceea, dacă s‑ar aduna întreaga biserică și toți ar vorbi în alte limbi și ar intra unii neștiutori sau necredincioși, oare nu vor spune ei că sunteți nebuni?24Dar dacă toți profețiți și intră cineva necredincios sau neștiutor, el este convins[8] de toți, este cercetat de toți,25lucrurile ascunse ale inimii lui sunt descoperite și astfel va cădea cu fața la pământ și I se va închina lui Dumnezeu, declarând: „Cu adevărat Dumnezeu este în mijlocul vostru!“
Ordine în cadrul închinării
26Deci, ce este de făcut, fraților? Când vă adunați laolaltă și fiecare are un psalm, o învățătură, o descoperire, un îndemn în altă limbă, o traducere, să se facă toate pentru zidirea bisericii.27Dacă cineva vorbește într‑o altă limbă, să fie doi sau cel mult trei și să vorbească fiecare pe rând, iar unul să traducă.28Dacă însă nu este niciun translator, atunci să tacă în biserică și să‑și vorbească numai lui însuși și lui Dumnezeu.29Să vorbească doi sau trei profeți, iar ceilalți să judece[9].30Iar dacă altuia, care stă jos, i se dă o descoperire, primul să tacă.31Căci toți puteți să profețiți, dar unul după altul, pentru ca toți să învețe și toți să fie încurajați.32Duhurile profeților le sunt supuse profeților,33fiindcă Dumnezeu nu este un Dumnezeu al dezordinii, ci al păcii. La fel ca în toate bisericile sfinților,34femeile să tacă în biserici, căci lor nu li se dă voie să vorbească, ci să fie supuse, așa cum spune și Legea.35Dacă doresc să învețe ceva, să‑și întrebe soții acasă, pentru că este rușinos pentru o femeie să vorbească în biserică.36Ce? Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu a pornit de la voi? Sau numai până la voi a ajuns el?37Dacă cineva crede că este profet sau este înzestrat duhovnicește, să‑și dea seama că ceea ce vă scriu este o poruncă a Domnului.38Dacă însă cineva nu recunoaște aceasta, nici el nu va fi recunoscut[10].39Astfel, frații mei, râvniți după a profeți și nu împiedicați vorbirea în alte limbi.40Însă toate să se facă așa cum se cuvine și în ordine.
1Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. (1 Cor 11:4; 1 Cor 12:1; 1 Cor 12:31; 1 Cor 13:2; 1 Cor 16:14)2For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. (1 Cor 14:18; 1 Cor 14:27)3On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation.4The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.5Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. (Num 11:29)6Now, brothers,[1] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? (Fapte 2:42; Ro 6:17; 1 Cor 14:26; Ef 1:17)7If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?8And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? (Num 10:9; Is 58:1; Ier 4:19; Ez 33:3; Ioel 2:1)9So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. (1 Cor 9:26)10There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,11but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. (Fapte 28:2)12So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.13Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.15What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. (Ps 47:7; Ef 5:19; Col 3:16; Iac 5:13)16Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider[2] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? (1 Cro 16:36; Ne 5:13; Ne 8:6; Ps 106:48; Ier 11:5; Ier 28:6; 1 Cor 11:24; 2 Cor 1:20; Apo 5:14; Apo 7:12; Apo 19:4)17For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.19Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.20Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. (Ps 131:2; Is 28:9; Mat 18:3; Ro 16:19; 1 Cor 2:6; Ef 4:14; Ev 5:12)21In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” (Deut 28:49; Is 28:11; Ioan 10:34)22Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign[3] not for unbelievers but for believers.23If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? (Fapte 2:13)24But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all,25the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you. (Is 45:14; Zah 8:23; Lu 17:16; Ev 4:12)
Orderly Worship
26What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. (1 Cor 12:7; 1 Cor 12:10; 1 Cor 12:30; 1 Cor 14:5; 1 Cor 14:6; 1 Cor 14:13; 1 Cor 14:18; 1 Cor 14:27; 2 Cor 12:19; 2 Cor 13:10; Ef 5:19)27If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. (1 Cor 14:26)28But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.29Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. (Iov 12:11; 1 Cor 12:10; 1 Ioan 4:1)30If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. (1 Tes 5:19)31For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged,32and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.33For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, (1 Cor 7:17; 1 Cor 14:40)34the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. (1 Cor 14:21; 1 Tim 2:11; 1 Pe 3:1)35If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.36Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached?37If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. (2 Cor 10:7; 1 Ioan 4:6)38If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.39So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. (1 Cor 12:31)40But all things should be done decently and in order. (1 Cor 14:31; 1 Cor 14:33; Col 2:5)
