1 Allora Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia di suo padre, pianse su di lui e lo baciò. 2 Poi Giuseppe ordinò ai medici che erano al suo servizio di imbalsamare suo padre; e i medici imbalsamarono Israele. 3 Ci vollero quaranta giorni, perché tanto è il tempo che si impiega a imbalsamare. E gli Egiziani lo piansero settanta giorni. 4 Quando i giorni del lutto fatto per lui furono passati, Giuseppe parlò alla casa del faraone, dicendo: «Se ora ho trovato grazia ai vostri occhi, fate giungere agli orecchi del faraone queste parole: 5 “Mio padre mi ha fatto giurare e mi ha detto: ‘Ecco, io muoio; seppelliscimi nel mio sepolcro, che mi sono scavato nel paese di Canaan’. Ora dunque, permetti che io salga e seppellisca mio padre; poi tornerò”». 6 Il faraone rispose: «Sali e seppellisci tuo padre come ti ha fatto giurare». 7 Allora Giuseppe salì a seppellire suo padre e con lui salirono tutti i servitori del faraone, gli anziani della sua casa e tutti gli anziani del paese d’Egitto, 8 tutta la casa di Giuseppe e i suoi fratelli e la casa di suo padre. Non lasciarono nella terra di Goscen che i loro bambini, le loro greggi e i loro armenti. 9 Con lui salirono pure carri e cavalieri, così da formare un corteo numerosissimo. 10 Quando giunsero all’aia di Atad, che è oltre il Giordano, vi furono grandi e profondi lamenti. Giuseppe fece a suo padre un lutto di sette giorni. 11 Quando gli abitanti del paese, i Cananei, videro il lutto dell’aia di Atad, dissero: «Questo è un grave lutto per gli Egiziani!» Perciò fu messo il nome di Abel-Misraim^[1] a quell’aia, che è oltre il Giordano. 12 I figli di Giacobbe fecero per lui quello che egli aveva ordinato loro: 13 lo trasportarono nel paese di Canaan e lo seppellirono nella grotta del campo di Macpela, che Abraamo aveva comprato con il campo da Efron l’Ittita, come sepolcro di sua proprietà, di fronte a Mamre. 14 Giuseppe, dopo aver sepolto suo padre, tornò in Egitto con i suoi fratelli e con tutti quelli che erano saliti con lui a seppellire suo padre. 15 I fratelli di Giuseppe, quando videro che il loro padre era morto, dissero: «Chi sa se Giuseppe non ci porterà odio e non ci renderà tutto il male che gli abbiamo fatto?» 16 Perciò mandarono a dire a Giuseppe: «Tuo padre, prima di morire, diede quest’ordine: 17 “Dite così a Giuseppe: ‘Perdona ora ai tuoi fratelli il loro misfatto e il loro peccato; perché ti hanno fatto del male’”. Ti prego, perdona dunque ora il misfatto dei servi del Dio di tuo padre!» Giuseppe, quando gli parlarono così, pianse. 18 I suoi fratelli vennero anch’essi, s’inchinarono ai suoi piedi e dissero: «Ecco, siamo tuoi servi». 19 Giuseppe disse loro: «Non temete. Sono io forse al posto di Dio? 20 Voi avevate pensato del male contro di me, ma Dio ha pensato di convertirlo in bene per compiere quello che oggi avviene: per conservare in vita un popolo numeroso. 21 Ora dunque non temete. Io provvederò al sostentamento per voi e i vostri figli». Così li confortò e parlò al loro cuore.

Vecchiaia e morte di Giuseppe

22 Giuseppe abitò in Egitto con la casa di suo padre; egli visse centodieci anni. 23 Giuseppe vide i figli di Efraim, fino alla terza generazione; anche i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, nacquero sulle sue ginocchia. 24 Giuseppe disse ai suoi fratelli: «Io sto per morire, ma Dio per certo vi visiterà e vi farà salire, da questo paese, nel paese che promise con giuramento ad Abraamo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe». 25 Giuseppe fece giurare i figli d’Israele, dicendo: «Dio per certo vi visiterà; allora portate via da qui le mie ossa». 26 Poi Giuseppe morì, all’età di centodieci anni; e fu imbalsamato e deposto in un sarcofago in Egitto.

Jakobs Begräbnis

1 Da warf sich Josef über seinen Vater und weinte über ihm und küsste ihn. 2 Und Josef befahl seinen Dienern, den Ärzten, dass sie seinen Vater zum Begräbnis salbten. Und die Ärzte salbten Israel, 3 bis vierzig Tage um waren; denn so lange währen die Tage der Salbung. Und die Ägypter beweinten ihn siebzig Tage. 4 Als nun die Trauertage vorüber waren, redete Josef mit den Leuten des Pharao und sprach: Hab ich Gnade vor euch gefunden, so redet mit dem Pharao und sprecht: 5 Mein Vater hat einen Eid von mir genommen und gesagt: Siehe, ich sterbe; begrabe mich in meinem Grabe, das ich mir im Lande Kanaan gegraben habe. So will ich nun hinaufziehen und meinen Vater begraben und wiederkommen. (Gen 47,29) 6 Der Pharao sprach: Zieh hinauf und begrabe deinen Vater, wie du ihm geschworen hast. 7 Da zog Josef hinauf, seinen Vater zu begraben. Und es zogen mit ihm alle Großen des Pharao, die Ältesten seines Hauses und alle Ältesten des Landes Ägypten, 8 dazu das ganze Haus Josefs und seine Brüder und die vom Hause seines Vaters. Allein ihre Kinder, Schafe und Rinder ließen sie im Lande Goschen. 9 Und es zogen auch mit ihm hinauf Wagen und Gespanne, und es war ein sehr großes Heer. 10 Als sie nun nach Goren-Atad kamen, das jenseits des Jordans liegt, da hielten sie eine sehr große und feierliche Klage. Und Josef hielt Totenklage über seinen Vater sieben Tage. 11 Und als die Leute im Lande, die Kanaaniter, die Klage bei Goren-Atad sahen, sprachen sie: Die Ägypter halten da große Klage. Daher nennt man den Ort Abel-Mizrajim^[1]; er liegt jenseits des Jordans. 12 Und Jakobs Söhne taten, wie er ihnen befohlen hatte, (Gen 49,29) 13 und brachten ihn ins Land Kanaan und begruben ihn in der Höhle auf dem Felde von Machpela, dem Acker, den Abraham zum Erbbegräbnis gekauft hatte von Efron, dem Hetiter, gegenüber Mamre. (Gen 23,13) 14 Als er ihn begraben hatte, zog Josef wieder nach Ägypten mit seinen Brüdern und mit allen, die mit ihm hinaufgezogen waren, seinen Vater zu begraben.

Josefs Edelmut und sein Tod

15 Die Brüder Josefs aber fürchteten sich, als ihr Vater gestorben war, und sprachen: Josef könnte uns gram sein und uns alle Bosheit vergelten, die wir an ihm getan haben. (Gen 27,41) 16 Darum ließen sie ihm sagen: Dein Vater befahl vor seinem Tode und sprach: 17 So sollt ihr zu Josef sagen: Vergib doch deinen Brüdern die Missetat und ihre Sünde, dass sie so übel an dir getan haben. Nun vergib doch diese Missetat uns, den Dienern des Gottes deines Vaters! Aber Josef weinte, als man ihm solches sagte. 18 Und seine Brüder gingen selbst hin und fielen vor ihm nieder und sprachen: Siehe, wir sind deine Knechte. 19 Josef aber sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Stehe ich denn an Gottes statt? 20 Ihr gedachtet es böse mit mir zu machen, aber Gott gedachte es gut zu machen, um zu tun, was jetzt am Tage ist, nämlich am Leben zu erhalten ein großes Volk. (Gen 45,5; Gen 45,7) 21 So fürchtet euch nun nicht; ich will euch und eure Kinder versorgen. Und er tröstete sie und redete freundlich mit ihnen. 22 So wohnte Josef in Ägypten mit seines Vaters Hause und lebte hundertzehn Jahre 23 und sah Ephraims Kinder bis ins dritte Glied. Auch die Söhne von Machir, Manasses Sohn, wurden dem Hause Josefs zugerechnet. 24 Und Josef sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Ich sterbe; aber Gott wird euch gnädig heimsuchen und aus diesem Lande führen in das Land, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zu geben geschworen hat. 25 Darum nahm er einen Eid von den Söhnen Israels und sprach: Wenn euch Gott heimsuchen wird, so nehmt meine Gebeine mit hinauf von hier. (Eso 13,19; Gios 24,32) 26 Und Josef starb, als er hundertzehn Jahre alt war. Und sie salbten ihn und legten ihn in einen Sarg in Ägypten.

1 And Joseph fell upon his father' face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. 2 And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, 5 My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. 7 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father' house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. 10 And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. 11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. 12 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: 13 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. 14 And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. 15 And when Joseph' brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. 16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, 17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. 18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. 19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. 22 And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father' house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. 23 And Joseph saw Ephraim' children of the third generation : the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph' knees. 24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 25 And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. 26 So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

1 Entonces José se abrazó al cuerpo de su padre y, llorando, lo besó. 2 Luego ordenó a los médicos a su servicio que embalsamaran el cuerpo, y así lo hicieron. 3 El proceso para embalsamarlo tardó unos cuarenta días, que es el tiempo requerido. Los egipcios, por su parte, guardaron luto por Israel durante setenta días. 4 Pasados los días de duelo, José se dirigió así a los miembros de la corte del faraón: —Si me he ganado el respeto de la corte, díganle por favor al faraón 5 que mi padre, antes de morirse, me hizo jurar que yo lo sepultaría en la tumba que él mismo se preparó en la tierra de Canaán. Por eso le ruego encarecidamente me permita ir a sepultar a mi padre, y luego volveré. 6 El faraón le respondió: —Ve a sepultar a tu padre, conforme a la promesa que te pidió hacerle. 7 José fue a sepultar a su padre, y lo acompañaron los servidores del faraón, es decir, los ancianos de su corte y todos los ancianos de Egipto. 8 A éstos se sumaron todos los familiares de José, es decir, sus hermanos y los de la casa de Jacob. En la región de Gosén dejaron únicamente a los niños y a los animales. 9 También salieron con él carros y jinetes, formando así un cortejo muy grande. 10 Al llegar a la era de Hatad, que está cerca del río Jordán, hicieron grandes y solemnes lamentaciones. Allí José guardó luto por su padre durante siete días. 11 Cuando los cananeos que vivían en esa región vieron en la era de Hatad aquellas manifestaciones de duelo, dijeron: «Los egipcios están haciendo un duelo muy solemne.» Por eso al lugar, que está cerca del Jordán, lo llamaron Abel Misrayin.^[1] 12 Los hijos de Jacob hicieron con su padre lo que él les había pedido: 13 lo llevaron a la tierra de Canaán y lo sepultaron en la cueva que está en el campo de Macpela, frente a Mamré, en el mismo campo que Abraham le había comprado a Efrón el hitita para sepultura de la familia. 14 Luego de haber sepultado a su padre, José regresó a Egipto junto con sus hermanos y con toda la gente que lo había acompañado.

La promesa de José a sus hermanos

15 Al reflexionar sobre la muerte de su padre, los hermanos de José concluyeron: «Tal vez José nos guarde rencor, y ahora quiera vengarse de todo el mal que le hicimos.» 16 Por eso le mandaron a decir: «Antes de morir tu padre, dejó estas instrucciones: 17 “Díganle a José que perdone, por favor, la terrible maldad que sus hermanos cometieron contra él.” Así que, por favor, perdona la maldad de los siervos del Dios de tu padre.» Cuando José escuchó estas palabras, se echó a llorar. 18 Luego sus hermanos se presentaron ante José, se inclinaron delante de él y le dijeron: —Aquí nos tienes; somos tus esclavos. 19 —No tengan miedo —les contestó José—. ¿Puedo acaso tomar el lugar de Dios? 20 Es verdad que ustedes pensaron hacerme mal, pero Dios transformó ese mal en bien para lograr lo que hoy estamos viendo: salvar la vida de mucha gente. 21 Así que, ¡no tengan miedo! Yo cuidaré de ustedes y de sus hijos. Y así, con el corazón en la mano, José los reconfortó.

Muerte de José

22 José y la familia de su padre permanecieron en Egipto. Alcanzó la edad de ciento diez años, 23 y llegó a ver nacer a los hijos de Efraín hasta la tercera generación. Además, cuando nacieron los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, él los recibió sobre sus rodillas.^[2] 24 Tiempo después, José les dijo a sus hermanos: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero sin duda Dios vendrá a ayudarlos, y los llevará de este país a la tierra que prometió a Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.» 25 Entonces José hizo que sus hijos le prestaran juramento. Les dijo: «Sin duda Dios vendrá a ayudarlos. Cuando esto ocurra, ustedes deberán llevarse de aquí mis huesos.» 26 José murió en Egipto a los ciento diez años de edad. Una vez que lo embalsamaron, lo pusieron en un ataúd.
