Rebecca chiesta in sposa per Isacco

1 Or Abraamo era diventato vecchio, d’età avanzata, e il Signore lo aveva benedetto in ogni cosa. 2 Abraamo disse al più anziano dei servi di casa sua, che aveva il governo di tutti i suoi beni: «Metti la tua mano sotto la mia coscia 3 e io ti farò giurare per il Signore, il Dio dei cieli e il Dio della terra, che tu non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei in mezzo ai quali abito; 4 ma andrai al mio paese, dai miei parenti, e vi prenderai una moglie per mio figlio, per Isacco». 5 Il servo gli rispose: «Forse quella donna non vorrà seguirmi in questo paese; dovrò allora ricondurre tuo figlio nel paese dal quale tu sei uscito?» 6 Abraamo gli disse: «Guàrdati dal far tornare là mio figlio! 7 Il Signore, il Dio dei cieli, che mi fece uscire dalla casa di mio padre e dal mio paese natale – e mi parlò e mi giurò dicendo: “Io darò alla tua discendenza questo paese” –, egli stesso manderà il suo angelo davanti a te e tu prenderai di là una moglie per mio figlio. 8 Se la donna non vorrà seguirti, allora sarai sciolto da questo giuramento che ti faccio fare; soltanto, non ricondurre là mio figlio». 9 E il servo pose la mano sotto la coscia di Abraamo, suo signore, e gli giurò di fare queste cose. 10 Poi il servo prese dieci cammelli, tra i cammelli del suo signore, e partì, avendo a sua disposizione tutti i beni del suo signore; e, messosi in viaggio, giunse in Mesopotamia, alla città di Naor. 11 Dopo aver fatto riposare sulle ginocchia i cammelli fuori della città presso un pozzo d’acqua, verso sera, all’ora in cui le donne escono ad attingere acqua, disse: 12 «O Signore, Dio del mio signore Abraamo, ti prego, fammi fare quest’oggi un felice incontro; usa bontà verso Abraamo mio signore! 13 Ecco, io sto qui presso questa sorgente; e le figlie degli abitanti della città usciranno ad attingere acqua. 14 Fa’ che la fanciulla alla quale dirò: “Abbassa, ti prego, la tua brocca perché io beva”, e che mi risponderà: “Bevi, e darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli”, sia quella che tu hai destinata al tuo servo Isacco. Da questo comprenderò che tu hai usato bontà verso il mio signore». 15 Non aveva ancora finito di parlare, quand’ecco uscire, con la sua brocca sulla spalla, Rebecca, figlia di Betuel figlio di Milca, moglie di Naor fratello di Abraamo. 16 La fanciulla era molto bella d’aspetto, vergine; nessun uomo l’aveva conosciuta. Lei scese alla sorgente, riempì la brocca e risalì. 17 Il servo le corse incontro e le disse: «Ti prego, fammi bere un po’ d’acqua della tua brocca». 18 Lei rispose: «Bevi, mio signore»; e s’affrettò a calare la brocca sulla mano e gli diede da bere. 19 Quando ebbe finito di dargli da bere, disse: «Io ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli finché abbiano bevuto a sufficienza». 20 E presto vuotò la sua brocca nell’abbeveratoio, corse di nuovo al pozzo ad attingere acqua e ne attinse per tutti i cammelli di lui. 21 Quell’uomo la contemplava in silenzio, per sapere se il Signore avesse o no dato successo al suo viaggio. 22 Quando i cammelli ebbero finito di bere, l’uomo prese un anello d’oro del peso di mezzo siclo, e due braccialetti del peso di dieci sicli d’oro, per i polsi di lei, e disse: 23 «Di chi sei figlia? Dimmelo, ti prego. V’è posto in casa di tuo padre per alloggiarci?» 24 Rispose a lui: «Sono figlia di Betuel, figlio di Milca, che lei partorì a Naor». 25 E aggiunse: «C’è da noi paglia e foraggio in abbondanza e anche posto da alloggiare». 26 Allora l’uomo s’inchinò, adorò il Signore, e disse: 27 «Benedetto sia il Signore, il Dio di Abraamo mio signore, che non ha cessato di essere buono e fedele verso il mio signore! Quanto a me, il Signore mi ha messo sulla via della casa dei fratelli del mio signore». 28 E la fanciulla corse a raccontare queste cose a casa di sua madre. 29 Rebecca aveva un fratello chiamato Labano. Labano corse fuori da quell’uomo alla sorgente. 30 Come ebbe veduto l’anello e i braccialetti ai polsi di sua sorella ed ebbe udito le parole di Rebecca sua sorella che diceva: «Quell’uomo mi ha parlato così», andò da quell’uomo, che se ne stava presso ai cammelli, vicino alla sorgente, 31 e disse: «Entra, benedetto dal Signore! Perché stai fuori? Io ho preparato la casa e un luogo per i cammelli». 32 L’uomo entrò in casa e Labano scaricò i cammelli, diede paglia e foraggio ai cammelli e portò acqua per lavare i piedi a lui e a quelli che erano con lui. 33 Poi gli fu posto davanti da mangiare, ma egli disse: «Non mangerò finché non abbia fatto la mia ambasciata». E l’altro disse: «Parla». 34 Egli disse: «Io sono servo di Abraamo. 35 Il Signore ha benedetto abbondantemente il mio signore, che è diventato ricco; gli ha dato pecore e buoi, argento e oro, servi e serve, cammelli e asini. 36 Or Sara, moglie del mio signore, ha partorito nella sua vecchiaia un figlio al mio padrone, il quale gli ha dato tutto quello che possiede. 37 Il mio signore mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: “Non prenderai per mio figlio una moglie tra le figlie dei Cananei, nel paese dei quali abito; 38 ma andrai alla casa di mio padre, alla mia famiglia, a prendervi una moglie per mio figlio”. 39 E io dissi al mio padrone: “Forse quella donna non vorrà seguirmi”. 40 Egli rispose: “Il Signore, davanti al quale ho camminato, manderà con te il suo angelo e darà successo al tuo viaggio; così tu potrai prendere per mio figlio una moglie dalla mia famiglia e dalla casa di mio padre. 41 Sarai sciolto dal giuramento che ti faccio fare solo quando sarai andato alla mia famiglia; e, se non vorranno dartela, allora sarai sciolto dal giuramento che mi fai”. 42 Oggi sono arrivato alla sorgente e ho detto: “Signore, Dio del mio signore Abraamo, se gradisci dar successo al viaggio che ho intrapreso, 43 ecco, io mi fermo presso questa sorgente; fa’ che la fanciulla che uscirà ad attingere acqua, alla quale dirò: ‘Ti prego, dammi da bere un po’ d’acqua della tua brocca’, 44 e che mi dirà: ‘Bevi pure, e ne attingerò anche per i tuoi cammelli’, sia la moglie che il Signore ha destinata al figlio del mio signore”. 45 E, prima che avessi finito di parlare in cuor mio, ecco uscire Rebecca con la sua brocca sulla spalla, scendere alla sorgente e attingere l’acqua. Allora io le ho detto: 46 “Ti prego, fammi bere!” Ed ella si è affrettata a calare la brocca dalla spalla e mi ha risposto: “Bevi! E darò da bere anche ai tuoi cammelli”. Così ho bevuto io, e lei ha abbeverato anche i cammelli. 47 Poi l’ho interrogata e le ho detto: “Di chi sei figlia?” Lei ha risposto: “Sono figlia di Betuel, il figlio che Milca partorì a Naor”. Allora io le ho messo l’anello al naso e i braccialetti ai polsi. 48 Mi sono inchinato, ho adorato il Signore e ho benedetto il Signore, il Dio di Abraamo mio signore, che mi ha guidato sulla giusta via a prendere per suo figlio la figlia del fratello del mio signore. 49 Ora, se volete usare bontà e fedeltà verso il mio signore, ditemelo; e se no, ditemelo lo stesso, e io mi volgerò a destra o a sinistra». 50 Allora Labano e Betuel risposero: «La cosa procede dal Signore; noi non possiamo dirti né male né bene. 51 Ecco, Rebecca ti sta davanti: prendila, va’, e sia moglie del figlio del tuo signore, come il Signore ha detto». 52 Quando il servo di Abraamo udì le loro parole, si prostrò a terra davanti al Signore. 53 Poi il servo tirò fuori oggetti d’argento, oggetti d’oro, vesti e li diede a Rebecca; donò anche delle cose preziose al fratello e alla madre di lei. 54 Poi mangiarono e bevvero, egli e gli uomini che erano con lui, e passarono lì la notte. La mattina, quando si furono alzati, il servo disse: «Lasciatemi tornare dal mio signore». 55 E il fratello e la madre di Rebecca dissero: «Rimanga la fanciulla ancora alcuni giorni con noi, almeno una decina; poi se ne andrà». 56 Ma egli rispose loro: «Non mi trattenete, giacché il Signore ha dato successo al mio viaggio; lasciatemi partire, perché io me ne torni dal mio signore». 57 Allora dissero: «Chiamiamo la fanciulla e sentiamo lei stessa». 58 Chiamarono Rebecca e le dissero: «Vuoi andare con quest’uomo?» Ed ella rispose: «Sì, andrò». 59 Così lasciarono andare Rebecca, loro sorella, e la sua nutrice con il servo di Abraamo e la sua gente. 60 Benedissero Rebecca e le dissero: «Sorella nostra, possa tu divenire migliaia di miriadi e possa la tua discendenza impadronirsi delle città dei suoi nemici!» 61 Rebecca si levò con le sue serve, montarono sui cammelli e seguirono quell’uomo. Il servo prese Rebecca e se ne andò. 62 Isacco era tornato dal pozzo di Lacai-Roi e abitava nella regione meridionale. 63 Isacco era uscito, sul far della sera, per meditare nella campagna; e, alzando gli occhi, guardò e vide venire dei cammelli. 64 Anche Rebecca alzò gli occhi, vide Isacco, saltò giù dal cammello, 65 e disse al servo: «Chi è quell’uomo che viene per la campagna incontro a noi?» Il servo rispose: «È il mio signore». Ed ella, preso il velo, si coprì. 66 Il servo raccontò a Isacco tutto quello che aveva fatto. 67 E Isacco condusse Rebecca nella tenda di Sara sua madre, la prese, ed ella divenne sua moglie, ed egli l’amò. Così Isacco fu consolato dopo la morte di sua madre.

1 Abraham war alt und hochbetagt, und der HERR hatte ihn gesegnet allenthalben. (Gen 12,2) 2 Und er sprach zu dem ältesten Knecht seines Hauses, der allen seinen Gütern vorstand: Lege deine Hand unter meine Hüfte 3 und schwöre mir bei dem HERRN, dem Gott des Himmels und der Erde, dass du meinem Sohn keine Frau nimmst von den Töchtern der Kanaaniter, unter denen ich wohne, (Gen 28,1; Eso 34,16) 4 sondern dass du ziehst in mein Vaterland und zu meiner Verwandtschaft und nimmst meinem Sohn Isaak dort eine Frau. 5 Der Knecht sprach zu ihm: Wie, wenn das Mädchen mir nicht folgen will in dies Land, soll ich dann deinen Sohn zurückbringen in jenes Land, von dem du ausgezogen bist? 6 Abraham sprach zu ihm: Davor hüte dich, dass du meinen Sohn wieder dahin bringst! 7 Der HERR, der Gott des Himmels, der mich von meines Vaters Hause genommen hat und von meiner Heimat, der mir zugesagt und mir auch geschworen hat: Dies Land will ich deinen Nachkommen geben –, der wird seinen Engel vor dir her senden, dass du meinem Sohn dort eine Frau nimmst. (2Cr 36,23; Ne 2,20) 8 Wenn aber das Mädchen dir nicht folgen will, so bist du dieses Eides ledig. Nur bringe meinen Sohn nicht wieder dorthin! 9 Da legte der Knecht seine Hand unter die Hüfte Abrahams, seines Herrn, und schwor es ihm. 10 So nahm der Knecht zehn Kamele von den Kamelen seines Herrn und zog hin und hatte mit sich allerlei Güter seines Herrn und machte sich auf und zog nach Mesopotamien^[1], zu der Stadt Nahors. (Gen 11,22) 11 Da ließ er die Kamele sich lagern draußen vor der Stadt bei dem Wasserbrunnen des Abends um die Zeit, da die Frauen pflegten herauszugehen und Wasser zu schöpfen. 12 Und er sprach: HERR, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham, lass es mir heute gelingen und tu Barmherzigkeit an Abraham, meinem Herrn! 13 Siehe, ich stehe hier bei dem Wasserbrunnen, und die Töchter der Leute in dieser Stadt werden herauskommen, um Wasser zu schöpfen. 14 Wenn nun ein Mädchen kommt, zu dem ich spreche: Neige deinen Krug und lass mich trinken, und es sprechen wird: Trinke, ich will deine Kamele auch tränken –, das sei die, die du deinem Diener Isaak beschert hast, und daran werde ich erkennen, dass du Barmherzigkeit an meinem Herrn getan hast. 15 Und ehe er ausgeredet hatte, siehe, da kam heraus Rebekka, die Tochter Betuëls, der ein Sohn der Milka war, die die Frau Nahors, des Bruders Abrahams, war, und trug einen Krug auf ihrer Schulter. (Gen 22,23) 16 Und das Mädchen war sehr schön von Angesicht, eine Jungfrau, und kein Mann hatte sie erkannt. Die stieg hinab zur Quelle und füllte den Krug und stieg herauf. 17 Da lief ihr der Knecht entgegen und sprach: Lass mich ein wenig Wasser aus deinem Kruge trinken. 18 Und sie sprach: Trinke, mein Herr! Und eilends ließ sie den Krug hernieder auf ihre Hand und gab ihm zu trinken. 19 Und als sie ihm zu trinken gegeben hatte, sprach sie: Ich will deinen Kamelen auch schöpfen, bis sie alle genug getrunken haben. 20 Und eilte und goss den Krug aus in die Tränke und lief abermals zum Brunnen, um zu schöpfen, und schöpfte allen seinen Kamelen. 21 Der Mann aber betrachtete sie und schwieg still, bis er erkannt hätte, ob der HERR zu seiner Reise Gnade gegeben hätte oder nicht. 22 Als nun die Kamele alle getrunken hatten, nahm er einen goldenen Ring, einen halben Schekel schwer, und zwei goldene Armreifen für ihre Hände, zehn Schekel schwer, 23 und sprach: Wessen Tochter bist du? Das sage mir doch! Haben wir auch Raum in deines Vaters Hause, um zu herbergen? 24 Sie sprach zu ihm: Ich bin die Tochter Betuëls, des Sohnes der Milka, den sie dem Nahor geboren hat. 25 Und sagte weiter zu ihm: Es ist auch viel Stroh und Futter bei uns und Raum genug, um zu herbergen. 26 Da neigte sich der Mann und betete den HERRN an 27 und sprach: Gelobt sei der HERR, der Gott meines Herrn Abraham, der seine Barmherzigkeit und seine Treue von meinem Herrn nicht hat weichen lassen; denn der HERR hat mich geradewegs geführt zum Hause des Bruders meines Herrn. 28 Und das Mädchen lief und sagte dies alles in ihrer Mutter Hause. 29 Und Rebekka hatte einen Bruder, der hieß Laban; und Laban lief zu dem Mann draußen bei dem Brunnen. 30 Denn als er den Ring und die Armreifen an den Händen seiner Schwester gesehen hatte und die Worte Rebekkas, seiner Schwester, gehört hatte: So hat mir der Mann gesagt –, da kam er zu dem Mann, und siehe, er stand bei den Kamelen am Brunnen. 31 Und er sprach: Komm herein, du Gesegneter des HERRN! Warum stehst du draußen? Ich habe das Haus bereitet und für die Kamele auch Raum gemacht. 32 Da kam der Mann ins Haus. Und man zäumte die Kamele ab und gab ihnen Stroh und Futter, dazu auch Wasser, zu waschen seine Füße und die Füße der Männer, die mit ihm waren. 33 Und man setzte ihm Essen vor. Er sprach aber: Ich will nicht essen, bis ich zuvor meine Sache vorgebracht habe. Laban antwortete: Sage an! 34 Er sprach: Ich bin Abrahams Knecht. 35 Und der HERR hat meinen Herrn reich gesegnet, dass er groß geworden ist, und hat ihm Schafe und Rinder, Silber und Gold, Knechte und Mägde, Kamele und Esel gegeben. 36 Dazu hat Sara, die Frau meines Herrn, in ihrem Alter meinem Herrn einen Sohn geboren; dem hat er alles gegeben, was er hat. 37 Und mein Herr hat einen Eid von mir genommen und gesagt: Du sollst meinem Sohn keine Frau nehmen von den Töchtern der Kanaaniter, in deren Land ich wohne, 38 sondern zieh hin zu meines Vaters Hause und zu meinem Geschlecht; dort nimm meinem Sohn eine Frau. 39 Ich sprach aber zu meinem Herrn: Wie, wenn mir das Mädchen nicht folgen will? 40 Da sprach er zu mir: Der HERR, vor dem ich wandle, wird seinen Engel mit dir senden und Gnade zu deiner Reise geben, dass du meinem Sohn eine Frau nimmst von meiner Verwandtschaft und meines Vaters Hause. (Tb 4,1) 41 Dann sollst du deines Eides ledig sein: Wenn du zu meiner Verwandtschaft kommst und sie geben sie dir nicht, so bist du deines Eides ledig. 42 So kam ich heute zum Brunnen und sprach: HERR, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham, hast du Gnade zu meiner Reise gegeben, auf der ich bin, 43 siehe, so stehe ich hier bei dem Wasserbrunnen. Wenn nun ein Mädchen herauskommt, um zu schöpfen, und ich zu ihr spreche: Gib mir ein wenig Wasser zu trinken aus deinem Krug, 44 und sie sagen wird: Trinke du, ich will deinen Kamelen auch schöpfen –, das sei die Frau, die der HERR dem Sohn meines Herrn beschert hat. 45 Ehe ich nun diese Worte ausgeredet hatte in meinem Herzen, siehe, da kommt Rebekka heraus mit einem Krug auf ihrer Schulter und geht hinab zur Quelle und schöpft. Da sprach ich zu ihr: Gib mir zu trinken. 46 Und sie nahm eilends den Krug von ihrer Schulter und sprach: Trinke, und deine Kamele will ich auch tränken. Da trank ich, und sie tränkte die Kamele auch. 47 Und ich fragte sie und sprach: Wessen Tochter bist du? Sie antwortete: Ich bin die Tochter Betuëls, des Sohnes Nahors, den ihm Milka geboren hat. Da legte ich einen Ring an ihre Nase und Armreifen an ihre Hände 48 und neigte mich und betete den HERRN an und lobte den HERRN, den Gott meines Herrn Abraham, der mich den rechten Weg geführt hat, dass ich für seinen Sohn die Tochter des Bruders meines Herrn nehme. 49 Seid ihr nun die, die an meinem Herrn Freundschaft und Treue beweisen wollen, so sagt mir’s; wenn nicht, so sagt mir’s auch, dass ich mich wende zur Rechten oder zur Linken. 50 Da antworteten Laban und Betuël und sprachen: Das kommt vom HERRN, darum können wir nichts dazu sagen, weder Böses noch Gutes. 51 Da ist Rebekka vor dir, nimm sie und zieh hin, dass sie die Frau sei des Sohnes deines Herrn, wie der HERR geredet hat. 52 Als Abrahams Knecht diese Worte hörte, neigte er sich vor dem HERRN bis zur Erde. 53 Danach zog er hervor silberne und goldene Kleinode und Kleider und gab sie Rebekka; auch ihrem Bruder und der Mutter gab er kostbare Geschenke. 54 Dann aß und trank er samt den Männern, die mit ihm waren, und sie blieben über Nacht allda. Am Morgen aber standen sie auf, und er sprach: Lasst mich ziehen zu meinem Herrn. 55 Aber ihr Bruder und ihre Mutter sprachen: Lass doch das Mädchen noch einige Zeit bei uns bleiben, vielleicht zehn Tage; danach mag sie ziehen. 56 Da sprach er zu ihnen: Haltet mich nicht auf, denn der HERR hat Gnade zu meiner Reise gegeben. Lasst mich, dass ich zu meinem Herrn ziehe. 57 Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen das Mädchen rufen und fragen, was sie dazu sagt. 58 Und sie riefen Rebekka und sprachen zu ihr: Willst du mit diesem Manne ziehen? Sie antwortete: Ja, ich will es. 59 Da ließen sie Rebekka, ihre Schwester, ziehen mit ihrer Amme, samt Abrahams Knecht und seinen Leuten. 60 Und sie segneten Rebekka und sprachen zu ihr: Du, unsere Schwester, wachse zu vieltausendmal tausend, und dein Geschlecht besitze die Tore seiner Feinde. (Gen 22,17) 61 So machte sich Rebekka auf mit ihren Mägden, und sie setzten sich auf die Kamele und zogen dem Manne nach. Und der Knecht nahm Rebekka und zog von dannen. 62 Isaak aber war gezogen zum »Brunnen des Lebendigen, der mich sieht« und wohnte im Südlande. (Gen 16,14; Gen 25,11) 63 Und er war hinausgegangen auf das Feld gegen Abend und hob seine Augen auf und sah, dass Kamele daherkamen. 64 Und Rebekka hob ihre Augen auf und sah Isaak; da stieg sie eilends vom Kamel 65 und sprach zu dem Knecht: Wer ist der Mann, der uns entgegenkommt auf dem Felde? Der Knecht sprach: Das ist mein Herr. Da nahm sie den Schleier und verhüllte sich. 66 Und der Knecht erzählte Isaak alles, was er ausgerichtet hatte. 67 Da führte sie Isaak in das Zelt seiner Mutter Sara und nahm die Rebekka, und sie wurde seine Frau und er gewann sie lieb. Also wurde Isaak getröstet über seine Mutter. (Gen 23,1)

1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. 5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father' house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter. 10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water . 12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. 15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham' brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water , and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father' house for us to lodge in? 24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master' brethren. 28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother' house these things. 29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister' hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. 32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men' feet that were with him. 33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. 34 And he said, I am Abraham' servant. 35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36 And Sarah my master' wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 38 But thou shalt go unto my father' house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. 39 And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 40 And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father' house: 41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one , thou shalt be clear from my oath. 42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water , and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master' son. 45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water : and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder , and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor' son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master' brother' daughter unto his son. 49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her , and go, and let her be thy master' son' wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham' servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham' servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah' tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother' death .

1 Abraham estaba ya entrado en años, y el Señor lo había bendecido en todo. 2 Un día, Abraham le dijo al criado más antiguo de su casa, que era quien le administraba todos sus bienes: —Pon tu mano debajo de mi muslo, 3 y júrame por el Señor, el Dios del cielo y de la tierra, que no tomarás de esta tierra de Canaán, donde yo habito, una mujer para mi hijo 4 Isaac, sino que irás a mi tierra, donde vive mi familia, y de allí le escogerás una esposa. 5 —¿Qué pasa si la mujer no está dispuesta a venir conmigo a esta tierra? —respondió el criado—. ¿Debo entonces llevar a su hijo hasta la tierra de donde usted vino? 6 —¡De ninguna manera debes llevar a mi hijo hasta allá! —le replicó Abraham—. 7 El Señor, el Dios del cielo, que me sacó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mis familiares, y que bajo juramento me prometió dar esta tierra a mis descendientes, enviará su ángel delante de ti para que puedas traer de allá una mujer para mi hijo. 8 Si la mujer no está dispuesta a venir contigo, quedarás libre de este juramento; pero ¡en ningún caso llevarás a mi hijo hasta allá! 9 El criado puso la mano debajo del muslo de Abraham, su amo, y le juró que cumpliría con su encargo. 10 Luego tomó diez camellos de su amo, y toda clase de regalos, y partió hacia la ciudad de Najor en Aram Najarayin.^[1] 11 Allí hizo que los camellos se arrodillaran junto al pozo de agua que estaba en las afueras de la ciudad. Caía la tarde, que es cuando las mujeres salen a buscar agua. 12 Entonces comenzó a orar: «Señor, Dios de mi amo Abraham, te ruego que hoy me vaya bien, y que demuestres el amor que le tienes a mi amo. 13 Aquí me tienes, a la espera junto a la fuente, mientras las jóvenes de esta ciudad vienen a sacar agua. 14 Permite que la joven a quien le diga: “Por favor, baje usted su cántaro para que tome yo un poco de agua”, y que me conteste: “Tome usted, y además les daré agua a sus camellos”, sea la que tú has elegido para tu siervo Isaac. Así estaré seguro de que tú has demostrado el amor que le tienes a mi amo.» 15 Aún no había terminado de orar cuando vio que se acercaba Rebeca, con su cántaro al hombro. Rebeca era hija de Betuel, que a su vez era hijo de Milca y Najor, el hermano de Abraham. 16 La joven era muy hermosa, y además virgen, pues no había tenido relaciones sexuales con ningún hombre. Bajó hacia la fuente y llenó su cántaro. Ya se preparaba para subir 17 cuando el criado corrió a su encuentro y le dijo: —¿Podría usted darme un poco de agua de su cántaro? 18 —Sírvase, mi señor —le respondió. Y en seguida bajó el cántaro y, sosteniéndolo entre sus manos, le dio de beber. 19 Cuando ya el criado había bebido, ella le dijo: —Voy también a sacar agua para que sus camellos beban todo lo que quieran. 20 De inmediato vació su cántaro en el bebedero, y volvió corriendo al pozo para buscar más agua, repitiendo la acción hasta que hubo suficiente agua para todos los camellos. 21 Mientras tanto, el criado de Abraham la observaba en silencio, para ver si el Señor había coronado su viaje con el éxito. 22 Cuando los camellos terminaron de beber, el criado tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba seis gramos, y se lo puso a la joven en la nariz;^[2] también le colocó en los brazos dos pulseras de oro que pesaban más de cien gramos, y le preguntó: 23 —¿Podría usted decirme de quién es hija, y si habrá lugar en la casa de su padre para hospedarnos? 24 —Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Milca y Najor —respondió ella, 25 a lo que agregó—: No sólo tenemos lugar para ustedes, sino que también tenemos paja y forraje en abundancia para los camellos. 26 Entonces el criado de Abraham se arrodilló y adoró al Señor 27 con estas palabras: «Bendito sea el Señor, el Dios de mi amo Abraham, que no ha dejado de manifestarle su amor y fidelidad, y que a mí me ha guiado a la casa de sus parientes.» 28 La joven corrió hasta la casa de su madre, y allí contó lo que le había sucedido. 29 Tenía Rebeca un hermano llamado Labán, que salió corriendo al encuentro del criado, quien seguía junto a la fuente. 30 Labán se había fijado en el anillo y las pulseras en los brazos de su hermana, y también la había escuchado contar lo que el criado le había dicho. Por eso salió en busca del criado, y lo encontró junto a la fuente, con sus camellos. 31 —¡Ven, bendito del Señor! —le dijo—. ¿Por qué te quedas afuera? ¡Ya he preparado la casa y un lugar para los camellos! 32 El criado entró en la casa. En seguida Labán desaparejó los camellos, les dio paja y forraje, y llevó agua para que el criado y sus acompañantes se lavaran los pies. 33 Cuando le sirvieron de comer, el criado dijo: —No comeré hasta haberles dicho lo que tengo que decir. —Habla con toda confianza —respondió Labán. 34 —Yo soy criado de Abraham —comenzó él—. 35 El Señor ha bendecido mucho a mi amo y lo ha prosperado. Le ha dado ovejas y ganado, oro y plata, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. 36 Sara, la esposa de mi amo, le dio en su vejez un hijo, al que mi amo le ha dejado todo lo que tiene. 37 Mi amo me hizo jurar, y me dijo: “No tomarás para mi hijo una mujer de entre las hijas de los cananeos, en cuyo país habito. 38 Al contrario, irás a la familia de mi padre, y le buscarás una esposa entre las mujeres de mis parientes.” 39 Yo le pregunté a mi amo: “¿Y si la mujer no acepta venir conmigo?” 40 Él me respondió: “El Señor, en cuya presencia he caminado, enviará su ángel contigo, y él hará prosperar tu viaje para que consigas para mi hijo una esposa que pertenezca a la familia de mi padre. 41 Sólo quedarás libre del juramento si vas a ver a mi familia y ellos no te conceden a la joven.” 42 »Cuando hoy llegué a la fuente, dije: “Señor, Dios de mi amo Abraham, si es tu voluntad, te ruego que hagas prosperar mi viaje. 43 Aquí me tienes, a la espera junto a la fuente. Si una joven sale a buscar agua, y yo le digo: ‘Por favor, déjeme usted beber un poco de agua de su cántaro’, 44 y ella me contesta: ‘Beba usted, y también le daré agua a sus camellos’, que sea ella la mujer que tú, Señor, has escogido para el hijo de mi amo.” 45 »Todavía no había terminado yo de orar cuando vi que Rebeca se acercaba con un cántaro sobre el hombro. Bajó a la fuente para sacar agua, y yo le dije: “Por favor, déme usted de beber.” 46 En seguida bajó ella su cántaro y me dijo: “Beba usted, y también les daré de beber a sus camellos.” Mientras yo bebía, ella les dio agua a los camellos. 47 Luego le pregunté: “¿Hija de quién es usted?” Y cuando ella me respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Najor y de Milca”, yo le puse un anillo en la nariz y pulseras en los brazos, 48 y me incliné para adorar al Señor. Bendije al Señor, el Dios de Abraham, que me guió por el camino correcto para llevarle al hijo de mi amo una parienta cercana suya. 49 Y ahora, si desean mostrarle lealtad y fidelidad a mi amo, díganmelo; y si no, díganmelo también. Así yo sabré qué hacer. 50 Labán y Betuel respondieron: —Sin duda todo esto proviene del Señor, y nosotros no podemos decir ni que sí ni que no. 51 Aquí está Rebeca; tómela usted y llévesela para que sea la esposa del hijo de su amo, tal como el Señor lo ha dispuesto. 52 Al escuchar esto, el criado de Abraham se postró en tierra delante del Señor. 53 Luego sacó joyas de oro y de plata, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También entregó regalos a su hermano y a su madre. 54 Más tarde, él y sus acompañantes comieron y bebieron, y pasaron allí la noche. A la mañana siguiente, cuando se levantaron, el criado de Abraham dijo: —Déjenme ir a la casa de mi amo. 55 Pero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca le respondieron: —Que se quede la joven con nosotros unos diez días, y luego podrás irte. 56 —No me detengan —repuso el criado—. El Señor ha prosperado mi viaje, así que déjenme ir a la casa de mi amo. 57 —Llamemos a la joven, a ver qué piensa ella —respondieron. 58 Así que llamaron a Rebeca y le preguntaron: —¿Quieres irte con este hombre? —Sí —respondió ella. 59 Entonces dejaron ir a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza con el criado de Abraham y sus acompañantes. 60 Y bendijeron a Rebeca con estas palabras: «Hermana nuestra: ¡que seas madre de millares! ¡Que dominen tus descendientes las ciudades de sus enemigos!» 61 Luego Rebeca y sus criadas se prepararon, montaron en los camellos y siguieron al criado de Abraham. Así fue como él tomó a Rebeca y se marchó de allí. 62 Ahora bien, Isaac había vuelto del pozo de Lajay Roí, porque vivía en la región del Néguev. 63 Una tarde, salió a dar un paseo^[3] por el campo. De pronto, al levantar la vista, vio que se acercaban unos camellos. 64 También Rebeca levantó la vista y, al ver a Isaac, se bajó del camello 65 y le preguntó al criado: —¿Quién es ese hombre que viene por el campo a nuestro encuentro? —Es mi amo —contestó el criado. Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió. 66 El criado le contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. 67 Luego Isaac llevó a Rebeca a la carpa de Sara, su madre, y la tomó por esposa. Isaac amó a Rebeca, y así se consoló de la muerte de su madre.
