Gli Israeliti sconfitti dai Filistei; morte di Saul e di Gionatan
1I Filistei diedero battaglia a Israele, e gli Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei e caddero morti in gran numero sul monte Ghilboa.2I Filistei inseguirono accanitamente Saul e i suoi figli e uccisero Gionatan, Abinadab e Malchisua, figli di Saul.3Il peso della battaglia gravò contro Saul; gli arcieri lo raggiunsero ed egli si trovò in grande difficoltà a motivo degli arcieri.4Saul disse al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la spada e trafiggimi, affinché questi incirconcisi non vengano a trafiggermi e a farmi oltraggio». Ma lo scudiero non volle farlo, perché aveva paura. Allora Saul prese la propria spada e vi si gettò sopra.5Lo scudiero di Saul, vedendolo morto, si gettò anch’egli sulla propria spada e morì con lui.6Così, in quel giorno, morirono insieme Saul, i suoi tre figli, il suo scudiero e tutta la sua gente.7Quando gli Israeliti che stavano dall’altra parte della valle e di là dal Giordano videro che la gente d’Israele si era data alla fuga e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti, abbandonarono le città e fuggirono; e i Filistei andarono ad abitarle.8L’indomani i Filistei vennero a spogliare i morti e trovarono Saul e i suoi tre figli caduti sul monte Ghilboa.9Tagliarono la testa a Saul, lo spogliarono delle sue armi e mandarono intorno, per il paese dei Filistei, ad annunciare la buona notizia nei templi dei loro idoli e al popolo;10collocarono le armi di lui nel tempio di Astarte e appesero il suo cadavere alle mura di Bet-San.11Ma quando gli abitanti di Iabes di Galaad udirono quello che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,12tutti gli uomini valorosi si alzarono, camminarono tutta la notte, tolsero dalle mura di Bet-San il cadavere di Saul e i cadaveri dei suoi figli, tornarono a Iabes e là li bruciarono.13Poi presero le loro ossa, le seppellirono sotto la tamerice di Iabes e digiunarono per sette giorni.

Da kamen die Philister und wohnten darin.8Am andern Tage kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, und fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne, gefallen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.9Da hieben sie ihm sein Haupt ab und nahmen ihm seine Waffen ab und sandten sie im Philisterland umher, um es zu verkünden im Hause ihrer Götzen und unter dem Volk. 1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.2And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul' sons.3And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.4Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.7And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.10And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.11And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;12All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.13And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
1Los filisteos fueron a la guerra contra Israel, y los israelitas huyeron ante ellos. Muchos cayeron muertos en el monte Guilboa.2Entonces los filisteos se fueron en persecución de Saúl, y lograron matar a sus hijos Jonatán, Abinadab y Malquisúa.3La batalla se intensificó contra Saúl, y los arqueros lo alcanzaron con sus flechas. Al verse gravemente herido,4Saúl le dijo a su escudero: «Saca la espada y mátame, no sea que lo hagan esos incircuncisos cuando lleguen, y se diviertan a costa mía.» Pero el escudero estaba tan asustado que no quiso hacerlo, de modo que Saúl mismo tomó su espada y se dejó caer sobre ella.5Cuando el escudero vio que Saúl caía muerto, también él se arrojó sobre su propia espada y murió con él.6Así, en un mismo día murieron Saúl, sus tres hijos, su escudero y todos sus hombres.7Cuando los israelitas que vivían al otro lado del valle y del Jordán vieron que el ejército de Israel había huido, y que Saúl y sus hijos habían muerto, también ellos abandonaron sus ciudades y se dieron a la fuga. Así fue como los filisteos las ocuparon.8Al otro día, cuando los filisteos llegaron para despojar a los cadáveres, encontraron a Saúl y a sus hijos muertos en el monte Guilboa.9Entonces lo decapitaron, le quitaron las armas, y enviaron mensajeros por todo el país filisteo para que proclamaran la noticia en el templo de sus ídolos y ante todo el pueblo.10Sus armas las depositaron en el templo de la diosa Astarté, y su cadáver lo colgaron en el muro de Betsán.11Cuando los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad se enteraron de lo que habían hecho los filisteos con Saúl,12los más valientes de ellos caminaron toda la noche hacia Betsán, tomaron los cuerpos de Saúl y de sus hijos y, luego de bajarlos del muro, regresaron a Jabés. Allí los incineraron,13y luego tomaron los huesos y los enterraron a la sombra del tamarisco de Jabés. Después de eso guardaron siete días de ayuno.
