1 Allora Samuele disse a tutto Israele: «Ecco, io vi ho ubbidito in tutto quello che mi avete detto e ho costituito un re su di voi. 2 Ora ecco il re che andrà davanti a voi. Quanto a me, io sono vecchio e canuto, e i miei figli sono in mezzo a voi; io vi ho guidati dalla mia giovinezza fino a questo giorno. 3 Eccomi qui; rendete a mio riguardo la vostra testimonianza, in presenza del Signore e in presenza del suo unto. A chi ho preso il bue? A chi ho preso l’asino? Chi ho derubato? Chi ho offeso? Da chi ho accettato regali per chiudere gli occhi sul suo comportamento? Io vi restituirò ogni cosa!» 4 Quelli risposero: «Tu non ci hai derubati, non ci hai maltrattati e non hai preso nulla dalle mani di nessuno». 5 Samuele disse: «Oggi il Signore è testimone contro di voi, e il suo unto pure è testimone, che voi non avete trovato nulla nelle mie mani». Il popolo rispose: «Egli è testimone!» 6 Allora Samuele disse al popolo: «Testimone è il Signore, che costituì Mosè e Aaronne e fece salire i vostri padri dal paese d’Egitto. 7 Dunque presentatevi, affinché io, davanti al Signore, discuta con voi la causa relativa a tutte le opere di giustizia che il Signore ha compiute a beneficio vostro e dei vostri padri. 8 Dopo che Giacobbe fu entrato in Egitto, i vostri padri gridarono al Signore e il Signore mandò Mosè e Aaronne, i quali fecero uscire i vostri padri dall’Egitto e li fecero abitare in questo luogo. 9 Ma essi dimenticarono il Signore, il loro Dio, ed egli li diede in potere di Sisera, capo dell’esercito di Asor, e in potere dei Filistei e del re di Moab, i quali mossero loro guerra. 10 Allora gridarono al Signore e dissero: “Abbiamo peccato, perché abbiamo abbandonato il Signore e abbiamo servito gli idoli di Baal e di Astarte; ma ora liberaci dalle mani dei nostri nemici, e serviremo te”. 11 Il Signore mandò Ierubbaal, Bedan, Iefte e Samuele, e vi liberò dalle mani dei nemici che vi circondavano, e viveste al sicuro. 12 Ma quando udiste che Naas, re dei figli di Ammon, marciava contro di voi, mi diceste: “No, deve regnare su di noi un re”, mentre il Signore, il vostro Dio, era il vostro re. 13 Ecco dunque il re che vi siete scelto, che avete chiesto; il Signore ha costituito un re su di voi. 14 Se temete il Signore, lo servite e ubbidite alla sua voce, se non siete ribelli al comandamento del Signore, e tanto voi quanto il re che regna su di voi seguite il Signore, il vostro Dio, bene; 15 ma se non ubbidite alla voce del Signore, se vi ribellate al comandamento del Signore, la mano del Signore sarà contro di voi, come fu contro i vostri padri. 16 Ora, dunque, fermatevi e osservate questa cosa grande che il Signore sta per compiere davanti ai vostri occhi! 17 Non siamo forse al tempo della mietitura del grano? Io invocherò il Signore ed egli manderà tuoni e pioggia affinché sappiate e vediate quanto è grande agli occhi del Signore il male che avete fatto chiedendo per voi un re». 18 Allora Samuele invocò il Signore e quel giorno il Signore mandò tuoni e pioggia; e tutto il popolo ebbe gran timore del Signore e di Samuele. 19 Tutto il popolo disse a Samuele: «Prega il Signore, il tuo Dio, per i tuoi servi, affinché non moriamo; poiché a tutti gli altri nostri peccati abbiamo aggiunto il torto di chiedere per noi un re». 20 Samuele rispose al popolo: «Non temete; è vero, voi avete fatto tutto questo male; tuttavia non allontanatevi dal Signore, ma servitelo con tutto il vostro cuore; 21 non ve ne allontanate, perché andreste dietro a cose vane, che non possono giovare né liberare, perché sono cose vane. 22 Infatti il Signore, per amore del suo grande nome, non abbandonerà il suo popolo, poiché è piaciuto al Signore di fare di voi il suo popolo. 23 Quanto a me, lungi da me il peccare contro il Signore cessando di pregare per voi! Anzi, io vi mostrerò la buona e diritta via. 24 Solo temete il Signore e servitelo fedelmente, con tutto il vostro cuore; considerate infatti le cose grandi che egli ha fatte per voi! 25 Ma se continuate ad agire malvagiamente, perirete voi e il vostro re».

Samuels Abschied

1 Da sprach Samuel zu ganz Israel: Siehe, ich habe eurer Stimme gehorcht in allem, was ihr mir gesagt habt, und habe einen König über euch gesetzt. (1Sam 8,7; 1Sam 8,22; 1Sam 11,15) 2 Siehe, nun wird euer König vor euch herziehen; ich aber bin alt und grau geworden, und meine Söhne sind bei euch. Ich bin vor euch hergegangen von meiner Jugend an bis auf diesen Tag. 3 Siehe, hier stehe ich. Nun sagt gegen mich aus vor dem HERRN und seinem Gesalbten! Wessen Rind oder Esel hab ich genommen, wem hab ich Gewalt oder Unrecht getan? Aus wessen Hand hab ich ein Geschenk angenommen, um mir damit die Augen blenden zu lassen? Ich will’s euch zurückgeben. (Nu 16,15; De 16,19) 4 Sie sprachen: Du hast uns weder Gewalt noch Unrecht getan und von niemand etwas genommen. 5 Er sprach zu ihnen: Der HERR sei Zeuge euch gegenüber, und sein Gesalbter sei Zeuge am heutigen Tage, dass ihr nichts in meiner Hand gefunden habt. Sie sprachen: Ja, Zeuge sollen sie sein. 6 Und Samuel sprach zum Volk: Der HERR ist’s, der Mose und Aaron eingesetzt und eure Väter aus Ägyptenland geführt hat. 7 So tretet nun her, dass ich mit euch rechte vor dem HERRN wegen aller Wohltaten des HERRN, die er an euch und euren Vätern getan hat. 8 Als Jakob nach Ägypten gekommen war, schrien eure Väter zu dem HERRN, und der HERR sandte Mose und Aaron, dass sie eure Väter aus Ägypten führten und sie an diesem Ort wohnen ließen. (Eso 2,23; Eso 3,7) 9 Aber als sie den HERRN, ihren Gott, vergaßen, verkaufte er sie in die Hand Siseras, des Feldhauptmanns von Hazor, und in die Hand der Philister und in die Hand des Königs von Moab; die kämpften gegen sie. 10 Und sie schrien zum HERRN und sprachen: Wir haben gesündigt, dass wir den HERRN verlassen und den Baalen und den Astarten gedient haben; nun aber errette uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde, so wollen wir dir dienen. (Nu 21,7; Giudic 10,10; Da 9,9) 11 Da sandte der HERR Jerubbaal, Barak^[1], Jeftah und Samuel und errettete euch aus der Hand eurer Feinde ringsum und ließ euch sicher wohnen. 12 Als ihr aber saht, dass Nahasch, der König der Ammoniter, gegen euch zog, spracht ihr zu mir: Nein, sondern ein König soll über uns herrschen!, obwohl doch der HERR, euer Gott, euer König ist. (1Sam 8,19; 1Sam 11,1) 13 Nun, da ist euer König, den ihr erwählt und erbeten habt; denn siehe, der HERR hat einen König über euch gesetzt. 14 Werdet ihr nun den HERRN fürchten und ihm dienen und seiner Stimme gehorchen und dem Munde des HERRN nicht ungehorsam sein, so werdet ihr und euer König, der über euch herrscht, dem HERRN, eurem Gott, folgen. 15 Werdet ihr aber der Stimme des HERRN nicht gehorchen, sondern seinem Munde ungehorsam sein, so wird die Hand des HERRN gegen euch sein wie gegen eure Väter. (Giudic 2,15) 16 So tretet nun herzu und seht, was der HERR Großes vor euren Augen tun wird. 17 Ist nicht jetzt die Weizenernte? Ich will aber den HERRN anrufen, dass er soll donnern und regnen lassen, damit ihr innewerdet und seht, dass ihr getan habt, was dem HERRN sehr missfiel, als ihr euch einen König erbeten habt. 18 Und als Samuel den HERRN anrief, ließ der HERR donnern und regnen an demselben Tage. Da fürchtete das ganze Volk den HERRN und Samuel gar sehr. 19 Und das ganze Volk sprach zu Samuel: Bitte für deine Knechte den HERRN, deinen Gott, dass wir nicht sterben; denn zu allen unsern Sünden haben wir noch das Unrecht getan, dass wir uns einen König erbeten haben. (Nu 21,7) 20 Samuel aber sprach zum Volk: Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr habt zwar all das Unrecht getan, doch weicht nicht vom HERRN ab, sondern dient dem HERRN von ganzem Herzen 21 und folgt nicht den nichtigen Götzen nach, die nichts nützen und nicht retten können, denn sie sind nichtig. (Is 41,29) 22 Der HERR verstößt sein Volk nicht um seines großen Namens willen; denn es hat dem HERRN gefallen, euch zu seinem Volk zu machen. (Eso 19,6; Sal 106,8) 23 Es sei aber auch ferne von mir, mich an dem HERRN dadurch zu versündigen, dass ich davon abließe, für euch zu beten und euch zu lehren den guten und richtigen Weg! (Gen 18,23; Eso 32,11) 24 Nur fürchtet den HERRN und dient ihm treu von ganzem Herzen; denn seht doch, wie große Dinge er an euch getan hat. (De 6,4; Gios 24,14) 25 Werdet ihr aber Unrecht tun, so werdet ihr und euer König verloren sein.

1 And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you. 2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day. 3 Behold, here I am : witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you. 4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man' hand. 5 And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness. 6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt. 7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers. 8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place. 9 And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. 10 And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee. 11 And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe. 12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king. 13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you. 14 If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God: 15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers. 16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. 17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king. 18 So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. 19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king. 20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart; 21 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things , which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain. 22 For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name' sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people. 23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way: 24 Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you. 25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

Discurso de despedida de Samuel

1 Samuel le habló a todo Israel: —¡Préstenme atención! Yo les he hecho caso en todo lo que me han pedido, y les he dado un rey que los gobierne. 2 Ya tienen al rey que va a dirigirlos. En cuanto a mí, ya estoy viejo y lleno de canas, y mis hijos son parte del pueblo. Yo los he guiado a ustedes desde mi juventud hasta la fecha. 3 Aquí me tienen. Pueden acusarme en la presencia del Señor y de su ungido. ¿A quién le he robado un buey o un asno? ¿A quién he defraudado? ¿A quién he oprimido? ¿Por quién me he dejado sobornar? Acúsenme, y pagaré lo que corresponda. 4 —No nos has defraudado —respondieron—; tampoco nos has oprimido ni le has robado nada a nadie. 5 Samuel insistió: —¡Que el Señor y su ungido sean hoy testigos de que ustedes no me han hallado culpable de nada! —¡Que lo sean! —fue la respuesta del pueblo. 6 Además Samuel les dijo: —Testigo es el Señor, que escogió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacar de Egipto a los antepasados de ustedes. 7 Y ahora, préstenme atención. El Señor los ha colmado de beneficios a ustedes y a sus antepasados, pero yo tengo una querella contra ustedes. 8 »Después de que Jacob entró en Egipto, sus descendientes clamaron al Señor. Entonces el Señor envió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacarlos de Egipto y establecerlos en este lugar. 9 Pero como se olvidaron de su Señor y Dios, él los entregó al poder de Sísara, comandante del ejército de Jazor, y al poder de los filisteos y del rey de Moab, y ellos les hicieron la guerra. 10 Por eso ustedes clamaron al Señor: “Hemos pecado al abandonar al Señor y adorar a los ídolos de Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté. Pero ahora, si nos libras del poder de nuestros enemigos, sólo a ti te serviremos.” 11 Entonces el Señor envió a Yerubaal, Barac,^[1] Jefté y Samuel, y los libró a ustedes del poder de los enemigos que los rodeaban, para que vivieran seguros. 12 »No obstante, cuando ustedes vieron que Najás, rey de los amonitas, los amenazaba, me dijeron: “¡No! ¡Queremos que nos gobierne un rey!” Y esto, a pesar de que el Señor su Dios es el rey de ustedes. 13 Pues bien, aquí tienen al rey que pidieron y que han escogido. Pero tengan en cuenta que es el Señor quien les ha dado ese rey. 14 Si ustedes y el rey que los gobierne temen al Señor su Dios, y le sirven y le obedecen, acatando sus mandatos y manteniéndose fieles a él, ¡magnífico! 15 En cambio, si lo desobedecen y no acatan sus mandatos, él descargará su mano sobre ustedes como la descargó contra sus antepasados. 16 »Y ahora, préstenme atención y observen con sus propios ojos algo grandioso que el Señor va a hacer. 17 Ahora no es tiempo de lluvias sino de cosecha.^[2] Sin embargo, voy a invocar al Señor, y él enviará truenos y lluvia; así se darán cuenta de la gran maldad que han cometido ante el Señor al pedir un rey. 18 Samuel invocó al Señor, y ese mismo día el Señor mandó truenos y lluvia. Todo el pueblo sintió un gran temor ante el Señor y ante Samuel, 19 y le dijeron a Samuel: —Ora al Señor tu Dios por nosotros, tus siervos, para que no nos quite la vida. A todos nuestros pecados hemos añadido la maldad de pedirle un rey. 20 —No teman —replicó Samuel—. Aunque ustedes han cometido una gran maldad, no se aparten del Señor; más bien, sírvanle de todo corazón. 21 No se alejen de él por seguir a ídolos inútiles, que no los pueden ayudar ni rescatar, pues no sirven para nada. 22 Por amor a su gran nombre, el Señor no rechazará a su pueblo; de hecho él se ha dignado hacerlos a ustedes su propio pueblo. 23 En cuanto a mí, que el Señor me libre de pecar contra él dejando de orar por ustedes. Yo seguiré enseñándoles el camino bueno y recto. 24 Pero los exhorto a temer al Señor y a servirle fielmente y de todo corazón, recordando los grandes beneficios que él ha hecho en favor de ustedes. 25 Si persisten en la maldad, tanto ustedes como su rey serán destruidos.
