1Dopo queste cose, fu detto a Giuseppe: «Ecco, tuo padre è ammalato». Allora egli prese con sé i suoi due figli, Manasse ed Efraim.2Giacobbe ne fu informato e gli fu detto: «Ecco, tuo figlio Giuseppe viene da te». Israele raccolse le sue forze e si mise seduto sul letto.3Giacobbe disse a Giuseppe: «Il Dio onnipotente mi apparve a Luz nel paese di Canaan, mi benedisse4e mi disse: “Ecco, io ti renderò fecondo, ti moltiplicherò, ti farò diventare una moltitudine di popoli e darò questo paese alla tua discendenza dopo di te, come proprietà perenne”.5Ora, i tuoi due figli che ti sono nati nel paese d’Egitto prima che io venissi da te in Egitto sono miei. Giuseppe li fece avvicinare a lui ed egli li baciò e li abbracciò.11Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Io non pensavo più di rivedere il tuo volto ed ecco che Dio mi ha dato di vedere anche la tua prole».12Giuseppe li allontanò dalle ginocchia di suo padre e si prostrò con la faccia a terra.13Poi Giuseppe li prese tutti e due: Efraim alla sua destra, alla sinistra d’Israele, e Manasse alla sua sinistra, alla destra d’Israele, e li fece avvicinare a lui.14E Israele stese la sua mano destra e la posò sul capo di Efraim, che era il più giovane, e posò la sua mano sinistra sul capo di Manasse, incrociando le mani; perché Manasse era il primogenito.15Benedisse Giuseppe e disse: «Il Dio alla cui presenza camminarono i miei padri Abraamo e Isacco, il Dio che è stato il mio pastore da quando esisto fino a questo giorno,16l’angelo che mi ha liberato da ogni male, benedica questi ragazzi! Siano chiamati con il mio nome, con il nome dei miei padri, Abraamo e Isacco, e si moltiplichino abbondantemente sulla terra!»17Quando Giuseppe vide che suo padre posava la mano destra sul capo di Efraim, ne ebbe dispiacere e prese la mano di suo padre per levarla dal capo di Efraim e metterla sul capo di Manasse.18Giuseppe disse a suo padre: «Non così, padre mio, perché questo è il primogenito; metti la tua mano destra sul suo capo».19Ma suo padre rifiutò e disse: «Lo so, figlio mio, lo so; anch’egli diventerà un popolo; anch’egli sarà grande; nondimeno il suo fratello più giovane sarà più grande di lui e la sua discendenza diventerà una moltitudine di nazioni».20In quel giorno li benedisse, dicendo: «Di te si servirà Israele per benedire, e dirà: “Dio ti faccia simile a Efraim e a Manasse!”». E mise Efraim prima di Manasse.21Poi Israele disse a Giuseppe: «Ecco, io muoio; ma Dio sarà con voi e vi farà ritornare nel paese dei vostri padri.22Io ti do una parte di più che ai tuoi fratelli: quella che conquistai dalle mani degli Amorei, con la mia spada e con il mio arco».

Ihnen gebe ich dieses Land, sie sollen es für immer besitzen.‹5Josef, ich möchte Ephraim und Manasse als meine Söhne annehmen!«, fuhr Jakob fort. »Sie wurden in Ägypten geboren, bevor ich hierherkam, und werden nun Ruben und Simeon gleichgestellt.6Die Söhne aber, die du nach ihnen bekommen hast, gelten als deine eigenen. Sie sollen kein Erbe bekommen, sondern zu Ephraim und Manasse gezählt werden.7Dies tue ich, weil ich deine Mutter Rahel immer besonders geliebt habe. Als wir aus Mesopotamien zurückkamen, starb sie in Kanaan, nicht weit von Efrata, dem heutigen Bethlehem. Dort begrub ich sie.«8Jakob blickte Ephraim und Manasse an. »Wer sind sie?«, fragte er.9»Das sind die beiden Söhne, die Gott mir in Ägypten geschenkt hat«, antwortete Josef. »Bring sie zu mir, ich will sie segnen!«, bat Jakob.10Jakobs Augen waren im Alter schwach geworden, er konnte kaum noch sehen. Darum brachte Josef die beiden nah an ihn heran. Jakob umarmte und küsste sie.11Dann wandte er sich wieder an Josef und sagte: »Ich hätte nicht geglaubt, dich jemals wiederzusehen. Jetzt lässt Gott mich sogar noch deine Kinder erleben!«12Josef nahm Ephraim und Manasse weg von Jakobs Knien und verbeugte sich tief vor seinem Vater.13Dann nahm er die beiden an die Hand und stellte Ephraim an Jakobs linke, Manasse an seine rechte Seite.14Aber Jakob kreuzte seine Hände und legte seine rechte Hand auf Ephraims Kopf, obwohl er der Jüngere war; seine linke legte er auf Manasses Kopf, obwohl er der Ältere war.15Er segnete Josef und seine Söhne und sagte: »Schon meine Väter Abraham und Isaak gingen ihren Weg mit Gott, dem Herrn. Und auch für mich hat er mein Leben lang wie ein guter Hirte gesorgt.16Sein Engel hat mich aus allen Gefahren gerettet. Dieser Gott möge auch Ephraim und Manasse reich beschenken! Sie sollen weitertragen, was er mit Abraham, Isaak und mir begonnen hat![1] Ihre Nachkommen sollen zahlreich werden und das Land bevölkern!«17Josef gefiel es nicht, dass Jakob seine rechte Hand auf Ephraims Kopf gelegt hatte. Er nahm sie, um sie auf Manasse zu legen.18»Er ist der Erstgeborene!«, sagte er. »Leg deine rechte Hand auf ihn!«19Aber sein Vater ging nicht darauf ein. »Ich weiß, mein Sohn, ich weiß!«, erwiderte er. »Auch von Manasse wird ein großes Volk abstammen, aber Ephraim steht eine noch größere Zukunft bevor. Seine Nachkommen werden einmal unzählige Völker bilden!«20Schließlich segnete Jakob die beiden noch einmal ganz persönlich: »Euer Name soll sprichwörtlich sein, wenn man sich in Israel Gutes wünscht. Dann wird man sagen: ›Gott erweise dir Gutes wie Ephraim und Manasse!‹« Auf diese Weise gab er Ephraim den Vorrang vor seinem älteren Bruder Manasse.21Zu Josef sagte er: »Ich muss bald sterben. Aber Gott wird euch helfen und euch nach Kanaan zurückbringen, in das Land eurer Vorfahren.22Du sollst deinen Brüdern etwas voraushaben: Ich verspreche dir das Bergland, das ich den Amoritern im Kampf mit Schwert und Bogen abgenommen habe.«
1After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.2And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed.3And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty[1] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, (Gen 17,1; Gen 28,13; Gen 28,19; Gen 35,6; Gen 35,9)4and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’ (Gen 17,8)5And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. (Gen 48,14)18And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.”19But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great.
