1Ecco la parola che fu rivolta a Geremia da parte del Signore, quando Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, tutto il suo esercito, tutti i regni della terra sottoposti al suo dominio e tutti i popoli combattevano contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le sue città:2«Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: Va’, parla a Sedechia, re di Giuda, e digli: “Così parla il Signore: Ecco, io do questa città in mano al re di Babilonia, il quale la darà alle fiamme;3tu non scamperai dalla sua mano, ma sarai certamente catturato e sarai dato in sua mano. I tuoi occhi vedranno gli occhi del re di Babilonia; egli ti parlerà da bocca a bocca e tu andrai a Babilonia.4Tuttavia, Sedechia, re di Giuda, ascolta la parola del Signore: Così parla il Signore, riguardo a te: tu non morirai di spada,5tu morirai in pace; come si arsero aromi per i tuoi padri, gli antichi re tuoi predecessori, così se ne arderanno per te. Si farà il lutto per te, dicendo: ‘Ahimè, signore!’, poiché sono io che pronuncio questa parola”, dice il Signore».6Il profeta Geremia disse tutte queste parole a Sedechia, re di Giuda, a Gerusalemme,7mentre l’esercito del re di Babilonia combatteva contro Gerusalemme e contro tutte le città di Giuda che resistevano ancora, cioè contro Lachis e Azeca, che erano tutto quello che rimaneva, in fatto di fortezze, fra le città di Giuda.
Asservimento degli schiavi affrancati
8Ecco la parola che fu rivolta a Geremia da parte del Signore dopo che il re Sedechia ebbe fatto un patto con tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme per proclamare l’emancipazione,9per la quale ognuno doveva rimandare in libertà il suo schiavo e la sua schiava, ebreo ed ebrea, e nessuno doveva tener più in schiavitù alcun suo fratello giudeo.10Tutti i capi e tutto il popolo che erano entrati nel patto di rimandare in libertà ciascuno il proprio servo e la propria serva e di non tenerli più in schiavitù ubbidirono, e li rimandarono;11ma poi cambiarono idea, e fecero ritornare gli schiavi e le schiave che avevano affrancati e li riassoggettarono a essere loro schiavi e schiave.12La parola del Signore fu dunque rivolta dal Signore a Geremia, in questi termini:13«Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Io feci un patto con i vostri padri il giorno che li condussi fuori dal paese d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, e dissi loro:14‘Al termine di sette anni, ciascuno di voi rimandi libero il suo fratello ebreo che si sarà venduto a lui; ti serva sei anni, poi rimandalo da casa tua libero’; ma i vostri padri non ubbidirono e non prestarono orecchio.15Voi eravate oggi tornati a fare ciò che è retto ai miei occhi, proclamando l’emancipazione ciascuno al suo prossimo, e avevate fatto un patto in mia presenza, nella casa sulla quale è invocato il mio nome;16ma siete tornati indietro e avete profanato il mio nome; ciascuno di voi ha fatto ritornare il suo schiavo e la sua schiava che avevate rimandato in libertà a loro piacere, e li avete assoggettati a essere vostri schiavi e schiave”.17Perciò così parla il Signore: “Voi non mi avete ubbidito proclamando l’emancipazione ciascuno di suo fratello e ciascuno del suo prossimo; ecco, io proclamo la vostra emancipazione”, dice il Signore, “per andare incontro alla spada, alla peste e alla fame, e farò in modo che sarete agitati per tutti i regni della terra.18Darò gli uomini che hanno trasgredito il mio patto e non hanno messo in pratica le parole del patto che avevano stabilito in mia presenza, passando in mezzo alle parti del vitello che avevano tagliato in due;19darò, dico, i capi di Giuda e i capi di Gerusalemme, gli eunuchi, i sacerdoti e tutto il popolo del paese che passarono in mezzo alle parti del vitello20nelle mani dei loro nemici e nelle mani di quelli che cercano la loro vita; i loro cadaveri serviranno di pasto agli uccelli del cielo e alle bestie della terra.21Darò Sedechia, re di Giuda, e i suoi capi nelle mani dei loro nemici, nelle mani di quelli che cercano la loro vita e nelle mani dell’esercito del re di Babilonia, che si è allontanato da voi.22Ecco, io darò l’ordine”, dice il Signore, “e li farò ritornare contro questa città; essi combatteranno contro di lei, la conquisteranno, la daranno alle fiamme. Io farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti”».
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army and all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: (2Re 25,1; Ger 1,15; Ger 39,1; Ger 51,28; Ger 52,4)2“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. (2Re 25,2; Ger 21,10)3You shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. You shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’ (Ger 32,4)4Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. (Ger 38,17; Ger 38,20; Ger 39,4; Ger 39,7)5You shall die in peace. And as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall burn spices for you and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.” (1Sam 31,12; 2Cr 16,14; 2Cr 21,19; Ger 22,18)6Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem,7when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, Lachish and Azekah, for these were the only fortified cities of Judah that remained. (Le 25,39; Ne 5,8)10And they obeyed, all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant that everyone would set free his slave, male or female, so that they would not be enslaved again. They obeyed and set them free.11But afterward they turned around and took back the male and female slaves they had set free, and brought them into subjection as slaves. (Ger 34,9)12The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord:13“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your fathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying, (Eso 20,2)14‘At the end of seven years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; you must set him free from your service.’ But your fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me. (Eso 21,2; De 15,12; Ger 7,24; Ger 7,26; Ger 11,8; Ger 17,23; Ger 25,4; Ger 34,9; Ger 35,15; Ger 44,5)15You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes by proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and you made a covenant before me in the house that is called by my name, (2Re 23,3; Ger 7,10; Ger 34,8)16but then you turned around and profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, whom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves. (Le 18,21; Le 19,12; Ger 34,11)17“Therefore, thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed me by proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; behold, I proclaim to you liberty to the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the Lord. I will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. (Ger 14,12; Ger 15,4; Ger 34,8; Mat 7,2; Ga 6,7; Giac 2,13)18And the men who transgressed my covenant and did not keep the terms of the covenant that they made before me, I will make them like[1] the calf that they cut in two and passed between its parts— (Gen 15,10; Ger 34,15)19the officials of Judah, the officials of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf. (Ger 29,2)20And I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives. Their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. (Ger 7,33; Ger 22,25)21And Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon which has withdrawn from you. (Ger 34,2; Ger 34,4; Ger 34,8; Ger 37,5; Ger 37,11)22Behold, I will command, declares the Lord, and will bring them back to this city.
