Ioas, re di Giuda; determinante l’intervento di Ieoiada

1 Il settimo anno Ieoiada, fattosi coraggio, fece un’alleanza con i capi di centurie: Azaria figlio di Ieroam, Ismaele figlio di Iocanan, Azaria figlio di Obed, Maaseia figlio di Adaia ed Elisafat figlio di Zicri. 2 Essi percorsero Giuda, radunarono i Leviti di tutte le città di Giuda e i capi delle case patriarcali d’Israele e vennero a Gerusalemme. 3 Tutta l’assemblea fece alleanza con il re nella casa di Dio. Ieoiada disse loro: «Ecco, il figlio del re regnerà, come il Signore ha promesso relativamente ai figli di Davide. 4 Ecco quello che voi farete: un terzo di quelli tra voi che entrano in servizio il giorno del sabato, sacerdoti e Leviti, starà di guardia alle porte del tempio, 5 un altro terzo starà nella casa del re e l’altro terzo alla porta di Iesod. Tutto il popolo starà nei cortili della casa del Signore. 6 Ma nessuno entri nella casa del Signore, tranne i sacerdoti e i Leviti di servizio; questi entreranno, perché sono consacrati; ma tutto il popolo si atterrà all’ordine del Signore. 7 I Leviti circonderanno il re da ogni lato, ognuno con le armi alla mano; e chiunque cercherà di penetrare nella casa di Dio sia messo a morte; e voi starete con il re, quando entrerà e quando uscirà». 8 I Leviti e tutto Giuda eseguirono tutti gli ordini dati dal sacerdote Ieoiada; ognuno di essi prese i suoi uomini: quelli che entravano in servizio il giorno del sabato e quelli che uscivano di servizio il giorno del sabato, poiché il sacerdote Ieoiada non aveva licenziato le mute uscenti. 9 Il sacerdote Ieoiada diede ai capi di centurie le lance, gli scudi grandi e i piccoli scudi che erano appartenuti a Davide e che stavano nella casa di Dio. 10 Dispose tutto il popolo attorno al re, ciascuno con l’arma in mano, dal lato destro al lato sinistro della casa, presso l’altare e presso la casa. 11 Allora condussero fuori il figlio del re, gli posero in testa il diadema, gli consegnarono la legge e lo proclamarono re; Ieoiada e i suoi figli lo unsero ed esclamarono: «Viva il re!» 12 Quando Atalia udì il rumore del popolo che accorreva e acclamava il re, andò verso il popolo nella casa del Signore. 13 Guardò e vide il re in piedi sul suo palco, all’ingresso; i capitani e i trombettieri erano accanto al re. Tutto il popolo del paese era in festa al suono delle trombe, e i cantori, con i loro strumenti musicali, dirigevano i canti di lode. Allora Atalia si stracciò le vesti e gridò: «Congiura! Congiura!» 14 Ma il sacerdote Ieoiada fece venir fuori i capi di centurie che comandavano l’esercito e disse loro: «Fatela uscire dalle file; e chiunque la seguirà sia ucciso con la spada!» Infatti il sacerdote aveva detto: «Non sia uccisa nella casa del Signore». 15 Così quelli le aprirono un varco con le mani, e lei giunse alla casa del re per la strada della porta dei cavalli; e là fu uccisa. 16 Ieoiada, tutto il popolo e il re fecero un’alleanza per la quale Israele doveva essere il popolo del Signore. 17 Tutto il popolo entrò nel tempio di Baal e lo demolì: fece a pezzi tutti i suoi altari e le sue immagini, e uccise davanti agli altari Mattan, sacerdote di Baal. 18 Poi Ieoiada affidò la sorveglianza della casa del Signore ai sacerdoti levitici, che Davide aveva ripartiti in classi preposte alla casa del Signore per offrire olocausti al Signore, com’è scritto nella legge di Mosè, con gioia e con canto di lodi, secondo le disposizioni di Davide. 19 Collocò i portinai alle porte della casa del Signore, affinché nessuno vi entrasse che fosse impuro per qualsiasi ragione. 20 E prese i capi di centurie, gli uomini ragguardevoli, quelli che avevano autorità sul popolo e tutto il popolo del paese, e fece scendere il re dalla casa del Signore. Entrarono nella casa del re per la porta superiore e fecero sedere il re sul trono reale. 21 Tutto il popolo del paese era in festa e la città rimase tranquilla, ora che Atalia era stata uccisa con la spada.

1 But in the seventh year Jehoiada took courage and entered into a covenant with the commanders of hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri. (2Re 11,4) 2 And they went about through Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of fathers’ houses of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. (2Cr 21,2) 3 And all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And Jehoiada^[1] said to them, “Behold, the king’s son! Let him reign, as the Lord spoke concerning the sons of David. (2Cr 6,16) 4 This is the thing that you shall do: of you priests and Levites who come off duty on the Sabbath, one third shall be gatekeepers, (1Cr 9,25; 1Cr 24,4) 5 and one third shall be at the king’s house and one third at the Gate of the Foundation. And all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the Lord. 6 Let no one enter the house of the Lord except the priests and ministering Levites. They may enter, for they are holy, but all the people shall keep the charge of the Lord. (1Cr 23,27) 7 The Levites shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand. And whoever enters the house shall be put to death. Be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.” 8 The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they each brought his men, who were to go off duty on the Sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss the divisions. 9 And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains the spears and the large and small shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of God. 10 And he set all the people as a guard for the king, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house. 11 Then they brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony. And they proclaimed him king, and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and they said, “Long live the king.” (De 17,18; 1Sam 10,24)

Athaliah Executed

12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. 13 And when she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets, and the singers with their musical instruments leading in the celebration. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains who were set over the army, saying to them, “Bring her out between the ranks, and anyone who follows her is to be put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Do not put her to death in the house of the Lord.” 15 So they laid hands on her,^[2] and she went into the entrance of the horse gate of the king’s house, and they put her to death there. (2Re 11,16; Ne 3,28; Ger 31,40)

Jehoiada’s Reforms

16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the Lord’s people. 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. (De 13,9) 18 And Jehoiada posted watchmen for the house of the Lord under the direction of the Levitical priests and the Levites whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the Lord, to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David. 19 He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean. (1Cr 26,1) 20 And he took the captains, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, marching through the upper gate to the king’s house. And they set the king on the royal throne. (2Re 11,19; 2Re 15,35) 21 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword.
