Regno di Roboamo

1 Quando Roboamo giunse a Gerusalemme, radunò la casa di Giuda e di Beniamino, centottantamila uomini, guerrieri scelti, per combattere contro Israele e restituire il regno a Roboamo. 2 Ma la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Semaia, uomo di Dio, in questi termini: 3 «Parla a Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, re di Giuda, e a tutto Israele in Giuda e in Beniamino, e di’ loro: 4 “Così parla il Signore: ‘Non salite a combattere contro i vostri fratelli! Ognuno se ne torni a casa sua; perché questo è avvenuto per mia volontà’”». Quelli ubbidirono alla parola del Signore e se ne tornarono indietro rinunciando a marciare contro Geroboamo. 5 Roboamo abitò a Gerusalemme e costruì delle città fortificate in Giuda. 6 Costruì Betlemme, Etam, Tecoa, 7 Bet-Sur, Soco, Adullam, 8 Gat, Maresa, Zif, 9 Adoraim, Lachis, Azeca, 10 Sorea, Aialon ed Ebron, che erano in Giuda e in Beniamino, e ne fece delle città fortificate. 11 Munì queste fortezze, vi pose dei comandanti e dei magazzini di viveri, d’olio e di vino; 12 e in ognuna di queste città mise scudi e lance e le rese straordinariamente forti. E Giuda e Beniamino furono per lui. 13 I sacerdoti e i Leviti di tutto Israele vennero da tutte le loro regioni a porsi accanto a lui; 14 infatti i Leviti abbandonarono le loro campagne e le loro proprietà, e vennero in Giuda e a Gerusalemme; perché Geroboamo, con i suoi figli, li aveva scacciati affinché non esercitassero più l’incarico di sacerdoti del Signore. 15 Geroboamo aveva costituito dei sacerdoti per gli alti luoghi, per i demòni e per i vitelli che aveva fatti. 16 E quelli di tutte le tribù d’Israele che avevano in cuore di cercare il Signore, Dio d’Israele, seguirono i Leviti a Gerusalemme per offrire sacrifici al Signore, Dio dei loro padri. 17 Essi fortificarono così il regno di Giuda e resero stabile Roboamo, figlio di Salomone, per tre anni; perché per tre anni seguirono la via di Davide e di Salomone. 18 Roboamo prese in moglie Maalat, figlia di Ierimot, figlio di Davide e di Abiail, figlia di Eliab, figlio d’Isai. 19 Ella gli partorì questi figli: Ieus, Semaria e Zaam. 20 Dopo di lei prese Maaca, figlia di Absalom, la quale gli partorì Abiia, Attai, Ziza e Selomit. 21 E Roboamo amò Maaca, figlia di Absalom, più di tutte le sue mogli e di tutte le sue concubine; infatti ebbe diciotto mogli e sessanta concubine, e generò ventotto figli e sessanta figlie. 22 Roboamo stabilì Abiia, figlio di Maaca, come capo della famiglia e principe dei suoi fratelli, perché aveva in mente di farlo re. 23 E, con avvedutezza, sparse tutti i suoi figli per tutte le regioni di Giuda e di Beniamino, in tutte le città fortificate, diede loro viveri in abbondanza e cercò per loro molte mogli.

Rehoboam Secures His Kingdom

1 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam. (1Re 12,21) 2 But the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah the man of God: (2Cr 12,5; 2Cr 12,15) 3 “Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, 4 ‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives. Return every man to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and returned and did not go against Jeroboam. (2Cr 28,8; 2Cr 28,11) 5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built cities for defense in Judah. (2Cr 8,5; 2Cr 11,23; 2Cr 12,4; 2Cr 14,6; 2Cr 17,2; 2Cr 17,19; 2Cr 21,3)

6 He built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7 Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, 8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, (2Cr 14,9) 9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron, fortified cities that are in Judah and in Benjamin. 11 He made the fortresses strong, and put commanders in them, and stores of food, oil, and wine. 12 And he put shields and spears in all the cities and made them very strong. So he held Judah and Benjamin.

Priests and Levites Come to Jerusalem

13 And the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel presented themselves to him from all places where they lived. 14 For the Levites left their common lands and their holdings and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons cast them out from serving as priests of the Lord, (Nu 35,2; 2Cr 13,9) 15 and he appointed his own priests for the high places and for the goat idols and for the calves that he had made. (1Re 12,28; 1Re 12,31; 1Re 13,33) 16 And those who had set their hearts to seek the Lord God of Israel came after them from all the tribes of Israel to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the Lord, the God of their fathers. (2Cr 15,9) 17 They strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and for three years they made Rehoboam the son of Solomon secure, for they walked for three years in the way of David and Solomon. (2Cr 12,1)

18 Rehoboam took as wife Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse, (1Sam 16,6; 1Sam 17,13; 1Sam 17,28; 1Cr 27,18)

19 and she bore him sons, Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham. 20 After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith. (1Re 14,31; 1Re 15,2) 21 Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and concubines (he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters). 22 And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah as chief prince among his brothers, for he intended to make him king. (De 21,15; 2Cr 11,20) 23 And he dealt wisely and distributed some of his sons through all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, in all the fortified cities, and he gave them abundant provisions and procured wives for them.^[1]
