1Non riprendere con asprezza l’uomo anziano, ma esortalo come un padre; i giovani, come fratelli;2le donne anziane, come madri; le giovani, come sorelle, in tutta purezza.3Onora le vedove che sono veramente vedove.4Ma se una vedova ha figli o nipoti, imparino essi per primi a fare il loro dovere verso la propria famiglia e a rendere il contraccambio ai loro genitori, perché questo è gradito davanti a Dio.5La vedova che è veramente tale, e che è rimasta sola, ha posto la sua speranza in Dio e persevera in suppliche e preghiere notte e giorno;6ma quella che si abbandona ai piaceri, benché viva, è morta.7Anche queste cose ordina, perché siano irreprensibili.8Se uno non provvede ai suoi, e in primo luogo a quelli di casa sua, ha rinnegato la fede ed è peggiore di un incredulo.9La vedova sia iscritta nel catalogo[1] quando abbia non meno di sessant’anni, quando è stata moglie di un solo marito,10quando è conosciuta per le sue opere buone: per aver allevato figli, esercitato l’ospitalità, lavato i piedi ai santi[2], soccorso gli afflitti, concorso a ogni opera buona.11Ma rifiuta le vedove più giovani perché, quando vengono afferrate dal desiderio, abbandonato Cristo, vogliono risposarsi,12rendendosi colpevoli perché hanno abbandonato l’impegno precedente.13Inoltre imparano anche a essere oziose, andando attorno per le case; e non soltanto a essere oziose, ma anche pettegole e curiose, parlando di cose delle quali non si deve parlare.14Voglio dunque che le vedove giovani si risposino, abbiano figli, governino la casa, non diano all’avversario alcuna occasione di maldicenza;15infatti già alcune si sono sviate per andare dietro a Satana.16Se qualche credente ha con sé delle vedove, le soccorra. Non ne sia gravata la chiesa, perché possa soccorrere quelle che sono veramente vedove.17Gli anziani che tengono bene la presidenza siano reputati degni di doppio onore, specialmente quelli che si affaticano nella predicazione e nell’insegnamento;18infatti la Scrittura dice: «Non mettere la museruola al bue che trebbia»[3]; e: «L’operaio è degno del suo salario»[4].19Non ricevere accuse contro un anziano, se non vi sono due o tre testimoni[5].20Quelli che peccano, riprendili in presenza di tutti, perché anche gli altri abbiano timore.21Ti scongiuro, davanti a Dio, a Cristo Gesù e agli angeli eletti, di osservare queste cose senza pregiudizi e di non fare nulla con parzialità.22Non imporre con troppa fretta le mani ad alcuno, e non partecipare ai peccati altrui; consèrvati puro.23Non continuare a bere acqua soltanto, ma prendi un po’ di vino a causa del tuo stomaco e delle tue frequenti indisposizioni.24I peccati di alcune persone sono manifesti prima ancora del giudizio; di altre, invece, si conosceranno in seguito.25Così pure, anche le opere buone sono manifeste; e quelle che non lo sono, non possono rimanere nascoste.

3Ehre die Witwen, die wirklich Witwen sind!4Wenn aber eine Witwe Kinder oder Enkel hat, so mögen sie zuerst lernen, dem eigenen Haus gegenüber gottesfürchtig zu sein und Empfangenes den Eltern[6] zu vergelten; denn dies ist angenehm vor Gott.5Die aber wirklich Witwe und vereinsamt ist, hofft auf Gott und verharrt in Flehen und Gebeten Nacht und Tag. (Lu 2,37)6Die aber in Üppigkeit lebt[7], ist lebendig tot. (Ap 3,1)7Und dies gebiete, damit sie untadelig sind!8Wenn aber jemand für die Seinen und besonders für die Hausgenossen nicht sorgt, so hat er den Glauben verleugnet und ist schlechter als ein Ungläubiger. 17Die Ältesten, die gut vorstehen, sollen doppelter Ehre[10] gewürdigt werden, besonders die in Wort und Lehre[11] arbeiten. (1Te 5,12)18Denn die Schrift sagt: »Du sollst dem Ochsen, der da drischt, nicht das Maul verbinden«, und: »Der Arbeiter ist seines Lohnes wert.« (Nu 18,31; De 25,4; Mat 10,10; 1Co 9,9)19Gegen einen Ältesten nimm keine Klage an außer bei zwei oder drei Zeugen! (1Ti 4,12; 2G 1,11; Ap 18,4)23Trinke nicht länger ⟨nur⟩ Wasser, sondern gebrauche ein wenig Wein um deines Magens und deines häufigen Unwohlseins[15] willen!24Von manchen Menschen sind die Sünden vorher offenbar und gehen voraus zum Gericht, manchen aber folgen sie auch nach.
