1Potom som videl iného anjela, ako s veľkou mocou zostupuje z neba, a jeho sláva ožiarila celú zem.2Zvolal mohutným hlasom: „Padol, padol veľký Babylon, stal sa obydlím démonov a skrýšou nečistých duchov i každého zlovestného a nenávideného vtáka.3To preto, že sa vínom jeho smilstva opíjali všetky národy, vládcovia sveta s ním smilnili a magnáti zeme bohatli z jeho márnotratnosti a prepychu!“4Potom som počul z neba iný hlas: „Ľud môj, utečte z tohto mesta, nezúčastňujte sa na jeho hriechoch, aby vás nepostihli jeho pohromy.5Lebo jeho viny sa navŕšili až po nebo a Boh nezabudol na jeho viny.6Odplaťte tej neviestke, ako si zaslúži. Dvojnásobne sa jej odplaťte za jej skutky. Do pohára, do ktorého nalievala, vlejte jej dvojnásobne!7Koľko si užila slávy a hýrenia, toľko jej teraz dajte trýzne a žiaľu. Lebo si nahovára: Trónim si ako kráľovná, vdova nie som a smútku neokúsim.8Preto v jedinom dni postihnú ju všetky pohromy: smrť i smútok, hlad i oheň. Lebo mocný je Pán Boh, ktorý ju odsúdil.“9Králi sveta, ktorí s ňou smilnili a hýrili, budú nad ňou plakať a nariekať, keď uvidia dym horiaceho mesta.10V hrôze nad jeho skazou budú sa len zobďaleč prizerať a nariekať: „Beda, beda, ty veľký Babylon, mesto také mocné, a predsa ťa vo chvíli postihol súd!“11Aj bohatí kupci zeme budú nad ním plakať, lebo už nik nekúpi ich tovar:12náklady zlata a striebra, drahokamov a perál, kmentu a purpuru, hodvábu a šarlátu, tujové drevo všelijakého druhu, rozličné výrobky zo slonoviny a vzácneho dreva, medi, železa a mramoru,13škoricu a indické korenie, voňavky a masti, kadidlo, víno a olej, múku a pšenicu, dobytok a ovce, kone a vozy, telá i duše ľudí.14Aj bohatstvo, po ktorom si tak dychtil, je preč, po všetkom lesku a nádhere niet ani pamiatky a nikdy ich už naspäť nezískaš.15Ľudia, ktorí s tým obchodovali a z toho zbohatli, budú sa prizerať zobďaleč, zdesení nad jeho skazou, a budú plakať a nariekať:16„Beda, beda, ty veľké mesto, ktoré si sa odievalo do kmentu, purpuru a šarlátu, zdobilo zlatom, drahokamami a perlami!17Vo chvíli bolo zničené všetko tvoje bohatstvo!“A všetci kapitáni lodí aj tí, čo sa na nich plavia, námorníci aj všetci, čo sa živia plavbou, neodvážili sa priblížiť,18a keď videli dym požiaru, volali: „Ktoré mesto na svete sa mohlo porovnať s týmto mestom?“19V smútku si sypali popol na hlavu a nahlas nariekali: „Beda, beda ti, veľké mesto! Z tvojho blahobytu zbohatli všetci majitelia námorných lodí – a teraz si vo chvíli spustošené!“20Avšak raduj sa, nebo, i ty, verná cirkev, apoštoli i proroci, lebo Boh vyniesol nad týmto mestom rozsudok, aký ono vynieslo nad vami.21Tu jeden mocný anjel zdvihol balvan, ťažký ako žarnov, hodil ho do mora a zvolal: „Takto odrazu bude zvrhnutý Babylon, to veľké mesto, a nezostane po ňom ani pamiatky.22Už nikdy tu nezaznie hudba, neozve sa harfa, flauta ani poľnica, nikdy už tu nebude pracovať remeselník ani umelec, ani klepot mlyna tu nik už nepočuje.23Nikdy sa tu už nerozsvieti svetlo lampy, ani sa tu nebude ozývať svadobné veselie. Tvoji obchodníci ovládali celý svet a tvojimi čarami boli omámené všetky národy.24Tvoje ulice sú skropené krvou prorokov a nasledovníkov Kristových i všetkých, čo boli zavraždení na zemi.“

She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast. (Iz 13,21; Iz 14,23; Iz 34,11; Iz 34,14; Jer 50,39; Jer 51,37; Sof 2,14; Zjv 14,8; Zjv 16,13)3For all nations have drunk[1] the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.” (Ez 27,33; Zjv 14,8; Zjv 17,2; Zjv 18,9; Zjv 18,11; Zjv 18,15)4Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; (Iz 48,20; 2 Kor 6,17)5for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. (Gn 18,20; Ezd 9,6; Jer 51,9; Jon 1,2; Zjv 16,19)6Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed. (Ž 137,8; Jer 16,18; Jer 50,15; Jer 50,29; Jer 51,24; Jer 51,49; Zjv 14,10; Zjv 16,19; Zjv 17,4)7As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, ‘I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’ (Iz 47,7; Ez 28,2; Sof 2,15; Zjv 3,17)8For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.” (Iz 47,9; Jer 50,34; Zjv 17,16; Zjv 18,10)9And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. (Jer 50,46; Ez 26,16; Zjv 17,2; Zjv 18,3; Zjv 18,18; Zjv 19,3)10They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.” (Zjv 14,8; Zjv 18,8; Zjv 18,15; Zjv 18,17; Zjv 18,19)11And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, (Ez 27,36; Zjv 18,3; Zjv 18,15)12cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble,13cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[2]14“The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you, and all your delicacies and your splendors are lost to you, never to be found again!”15The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, (Zjv 18,3; Zjv 18,10; Zjv 18,11)16“Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! (Zjv 17,4)17For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.” And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off (Ez 27,28; Zjv 17,16; Zjv 18,10; Zjv 18,19)18and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, “What city was like the great city?” (Ez 27,30; Ez 27,32; Zjv 13,4; Zjv 18,9)19And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out, “Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been laid waste. (Joz 7,6; Jób 2,12; Zjv 18,3; Zjv 18,10; Zjv 18,15; Zjv 18,17)20Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!” (Dt 32,43; Jer 51,48; Lk 11,49; Zjv 12,12; Zjv 19,2)21Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more; (Jer 51,63; Zjv 5,2; Zjv 10,1; Zjv 18,10)22and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will be heard in you no more, and a craftsman of any craft will be found in you no more, and the sound of the mill will be heard in you no more, (Kaz 12,4; Iz 14,11; Iz 24,8; Jer 25,10; Ez 26,13)23and the light of a lamp will shine in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more, for your merchants were the great ones of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery. (Iz 23,8; Jer 7,34; Jer 16,9; Jer 33,11; Nah 3,4)24And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth.” (Jer 51,49; Mt 23,35; Zjv 17,6)
