1After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.2Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.3When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place.4But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.5That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.6The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumours.[1]7When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, ‘The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.’8So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, ‘What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?’ They answered, ‘Let the ark of the god of Israel be moved to Gath.’ So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.9But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumours.[2]10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, ‘They have brought the ark of the god of Israel round to us to kill us and our people.’11So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, ‘Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[3] will kill us and our people.’ For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it.12Those who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

Die Bundeslade bei den Philistern
1Die Philister aber hatten die Lade Gottes genommen und sie von Eben-Eser nach Asdod gebracht. (Jos 11:22; Jos 15:47; 1Sa 4:1; Am 1:8)2Und die Philister nahmen die Lade Gottes und brachten sie in das Haus Dagons[1] und stellten sie neben Dagon. (Jud 16:23; 1Ch 10:10; 2Co 6:15)3Als aber die Asdoditer am folgenden Morgen früh aufstanden, siehe, da lag Dagon auf seinem Angesicht auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN. Da nahmen sie den Dagon und stellten ihn wieder an seinen Platz. (Ps 97:7; Isa 19:1; Isa 46:1; Isa 46:7)4Als sie aber am folgenden Morgen früh aufstanden, siehe, da lag Dagon auf seinem Angesicht auf der Erde vor der Lade des HERRN; aber der Kopf Dagons und seine beiden Hände [lagen] abgehauen auf der Schwelle, nur [der Rumpf] Dagons war von ihm übrig geblieben. (Isa 2:18; Jer 10:14; Jer 50:2; Eze 6:6)5Darum treten die Priester Dagons und alle, die in den Tempel Dagons gehen, nicht auf die Schwelle Dagons in Asdod bis zu diesem Tag. (Isa 44:18)6Aber die Hand des HERRN lag schwer auf den Einwohnern von Asdod, und er brachte Verderben über sie und schlug Asdod und sein ganzes Gebiet mit Beulen. (1Sa 4:8; 1Sa 6:20; 2Sa 6:9)8Und sie sandten [Boten] hin und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister zu sich und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit der Lade des Gottes Israels machen? Da antworteten sie: Die Lade des Gottes Israels soll nach Gat ziehen! Und sie brachten die Lade des Gottes Israels fort. (1Sa 7:14; 1Sa 17:4; 2Sa 21:20)9Und es geschah, als sie [die Lade] hingebracht hatten, da kam die Hand des HERRN über die Stadt, sodass eine sehr große Bestürzung [entstand]; und er schlug die Leute in der Stadt, vom Kleinsten bis zum Größten, sodass an ihnen Beulen ausbrachen. Als aber die Lade Gottes nach Ekron kam, schrien die von Ekron und sprachen: Sie haben die Lade des Gottes Israels zu uns hergebracht, um uns und unser Volk zu töten! (Ex 15:14; Jos 13:3; 1Sa 17:52; 2Ki 1:2)11Da sandten sie [Boten] und versammelten alle Fürsten der Philister und sprachen: Sendet die Lade des Gottes Israels wieder zurück an ihren Ort, damit sie uns und unser Volk nicht tötet! Denn es war eine tödliche Bestürzung in der ganzen Stadt, und die Hand Gottes lag sehr schwer auf ihr.
