Jesus at a Pharisee’s house

1 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?’ 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. 5 Then he asked them, ‘If one of you has a child^[1] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?’ 6 And they had nothing to say. 7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honour at the table, he told them this parable: 8 ‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honour, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, “Give this person your seat.” Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, “Friend, move up to a better place.” Then you will be honoured in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ 12 Then Jesus said to his host, ‘When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’

The parable of the great banquet

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, ‘Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.’ 16 Jesus replied: ‘A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.” 18 ‘But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, “I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.” 19 ‘Another said, “I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.” 20 ‘Still another said, “I have just got married, so I can’t come.” 21 ‘The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.” 22 ‘ “Sir,” the servant said, “what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.” 23 ‘Then the master told his servant, “Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.” ’

The cost of being a disciple

25 Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 ‘Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, “This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.” 31 ‘Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. 34 ‘Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure heap; it is thrown out. ‘Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.’

1 An einem Sabbat ging Jesus zum Essen in das Haus eines führenden Pharisäers. Er wurde aufmerksam beobachtet. 2 Da stand auf einmal ein Mann vor ihm, der an Wassersucht^[1] litt. 3 Jesus fragte die anwesenden Gesetzeslehrer und Pharisäer: "Ist es erlaubt, am Sabbat zu heilen, oder nicht?" 4 Als sie ihm keine Antwort gaben, berührte er den Kranken, heilte ihn und ließ ihn gehen. 5 Dann sagte er zu den Anwesenden: "Wenn einem von euch das eigene Kind in den Brunnen stürzt oder auch nur ein Rind, zieht er es dann nicht sofort wieder heraus, auch wenn Sabbat ist?" 6 Sie konnten ihm nichts darauf antworten. 7 Als er bemerkte, wie die Eingeladenen sich die Ehrenplätze aussuchten, gab er ihnen den folgenden Rat: 8 "Wenn du von jemand zur Hochzeit eingeladen wirst, dann besetze nicht gleich den Ehrenplatz. Es könnte ja sein, dass noch jemand eingeladen ist, der angesehener ist als du. 9 Der Gastgeber, der euch beide eingeladen hat, müsste dann kommen und dir sagen: 'Mach ihm bitte Platz!' Dann müsstest du beschämt ganz nach unten rücken. 10 Nimm lieber von vornherein den letzten Platz ein. Wenn dann der Gastgeber kommt und zu dir sagt: 'Mein Freund, nimm doch weiter oben Platz!', wirst du vor allen Gästen geehrt sein. 11 Denn jeder, der sich selbst erhöht, wird erniedrigt werden, und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, wird erhöht werden." 12 Dann wandte er sich an seinen Gastgeber: "Wenn du mittags oder abends ein Essen gibst, dann lade nicht deine Freunde, deine Brüder oder deine Verwandten ein, auch nicht deine reichen Nachbarn. Denn sie würden dich wieder einladen, und das wäre dann deine Belohnung. 13 Nein, wenn du ein Essen gibst, dann lade Arme, Behinderte, Gelähmte und Blinde ein! 14 Dann wirst du dich freuen können, denn sie haben nichts, um es dir zu vergelten. Gott aber wird es dir bei der Auferstehung der Gerechten ersetzen." 15 Da sagte einer von den Gästen zu Jesus: "Was für ein Glück muss es sein, im Reich Gottes zum Essen eingeladen zu werden!" 16 Ihm antwortete Jesus folgendermaßen: "Ein Mann plante ein großes Festessen für den Abend und lud viele dazu ein. 17 Als das Fest beginnen sollte, schickte er seinen Diener und ließ den Eingeladenen sagen: 'Kommt, es ist schon alles bereit!' 18 Doch jetzt begann sich einer nach dem anderen zu entschuldigen. Der erste erklärte: 'Ich habe einen Acker gekauft, den ich mir unbedingt ansehen muss. Bitte entschuldige mich.' 19 Ein anderer meinte: 'Ich habe fünf Ochsengespanne gekauft, die ich gleich prüfen muss. Bitte entschuldige mich.' 20 Und ein dritter sagte: 'Ich habe gerade erst geheiratet, darum kann ich nicht kommen.' 21 Als der Diener zurückkam und das seinem Herrn berichtete, wurde dieser zornig. Er befahl ihm: 'Lauf schnell auf die Straßen und Gassen der Stadt und hole die Armen, die Behinderten, die Blinden und die Gelähmten herein!' 22 Bald meldete der Diener: 'Herr, es ist geschehen, was du befohlen hast, aber es ist noch Platz für weitere Gäste.' 23 Da befahl ihm der Herr: 'Geh schnell auf die Landstraßen und an die Zäune und dränge alle, die du dort findest, hereinzukommen, damit mein Haus voll wird. 24 Denn das eine sage ich euch: Keiner von denen, die ich zuerst eingeladen hatte, wird an meinen Tisch kommen!'"

Kosten der Nachfolge

25 Als Jesus weiterzog, begleiteten ihn viele Menschen. Er drehte sich zu ihnen um und sagte: 26 "Wenn jemand zu mir kommen will, muss ich ihm wichtiger sein als sein eigener Vater, seine Mutter, seine Frau, seine Kinder, seine Geschwister und selbst sein eigenes Leben; sonst kann er nicht mein Jünger sein. 27 Wer nicht sein Kreuz trägt und mir nachkommt, kann nicht mein Jünger sein. 28 Wenn jemand von euch ein hohes Haus bauen will, muss er sich doch vorher hinsetzen und die Kosten überschlagen, um zu sehen, ob sein Geld dafür reicht. 29 Sonst hat er vielleicht das Fundament gelegt, kann aber nicht weiterbauen. Und alle, die das sehen, fangen an zu spotten. 30 Das ist der', sagen sie, 'der groß bauen wollte und es nicht weitergebracht hat.' 31 Oder stellt euch einen König vor, der gegen einen anderen König Krieg führen muss. Wird er sich nicht vorher hinsetzen und überlegen, ob er mit zehntausend Mann stark genug ist, sich seinem Gegner zu stellen, der mit zwanzigtausend Mann anrückt? 32 Wenn nicht, wird er, solange der andere noch weit weg ist, eine Gesandtschaft schicken und Friedensbedingungen aushandeln. 33 Darum kann auch keiner von euch mein Jünger sein, der nicht von allem Abschied nimmt, was er hat. 34 Salz ist etwas Gutes. Wenn es aber seinen Geschmack verliert, womit soll man es wieder salzig machen? 35 Es ist nicht einmal mehr als Dünger für den Acker tauglich. Man kann es nur noch wegschütten. Wer Ohren hat und hören kann, der höre zu!"

1 وَإِذْ دَخَلَ بَيْتَ وَاحِدٍ مِنْ رُؤَسَاءِ الْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ فِي ذَاتِ سَبْتٍ لِيَتَنَاوَلَ الطَّعَامَ، كَانُوا يُرَاقِبُونَهُ. 2 وَإذَا أَمَامَهُ إِنْسَانٌ مُصَابٌ بِالاسْتِسْقَاءِ. 3 فَخَاطَبَ يَسُوعُ عُلَمَاءَ الشَّرِيعَةِ وَالْفَرِّيسِيِّينَ، وَسَأَلَهُمْ: «أَيَحِلُّ إِجْرَاءُ الشِّفَاءِ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ أَمْ لا؟» 4 وَلكِنَّهُمْ ظَلُّوا صَامِتِينَ. فَأَخَذَهُ وَشَفَاهُ وَصَرَفَهُ. 5 وَعَادَ يَسْأَلُهُمْ: «مَنْ مِنْكُمْ يَسْقُطُ حِمَارُهُ أَوْ ثَوْرُهُ فِي بِئْرٍ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ وَلا يَنْتَشِلُهُ حَالا؟» 6 فَلَمْ يَقْدِرُوا أَنْ يُجِيبُوهُ عَنْ هَذَا. 7 وَضَرَبَ لِلْمَدْعُوِّينَ مَثَلاً بَعْدَمَا لاحَظَ كَيْفَ اخْتَارُوا أَمَاكِنَ الصَّدَارَةِ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: 8 «عِنْدَمَا يَدْعُوكَ أَحَدٌ إِلَى وَلِيمَةِ عُرْسٍ، فَلا تَتَّكِئْ فِي مَكَانِ الصَّدَارَةِ، إِذْ رُبَّمَا كَانَ قَدْ دَعَا إِلَيْهِ مَنْ هُوَ أَرْفَعُ مِنْكَ مَقَاماً، 9 فَيَأْتِي الَّذِي دَعَاكَ وَدَعَاهُ وَيَقُولُ لَكَ: أَخْلِ الْمَكَانَ لِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ! وَعِنْدَئِذٍ تَنْسَحِبُ بِخَجَلٍ لِتَأْخُذَ الْمَكَانَ الأَخِيرَ. 10 وَلكِنْ، عِنْدَمَا تُدْعَى، فَاذْهَبْ وَاتَّكِئْ فِي الْمَكَانِ الأَخِيرِ، حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ، يَقُولُ لَكَ: يَا صَدِيقِي، قُمْ إِلَى الصَّدْرِ! وَعِنْدَئِذٍ يَرْتَفِعُ قَدْرُكَ فِي نَظَرِ الْمُتَّكِئِينَ مَعَكَ. 11 فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَنْ يُرَفِّعُ نَفْسَهُ يُوضَعُ، وَمَنْ يَضَعُ نَفْسَهُ يُرَفَّعُ». 12 وَقَالَ أَيْضاً لِلَّذِي دَعَاهُ: «عِنْدَمَا تُقِيمُ غَدَاءً أَوْ عَشَاءً، فَلا تَدْعُ أَصْدِقَاءَكَ وَلا إِخْوَتَكَ وَلا أَقْرِبَاءَكَ وَلا جِيرَانَكَ الأَغْنِيَاءَ، لِئَلّا يَدْعُوكَ هُمْ أَيْضاً بِالْمُقَابِلِ، فَتَكُونَ قَدْ كُوفِئْتَ. 13 وَلكِنْ، عِنْدَمَا تُقِيمُ وَلِيمَةً ادْعُ الْفُقَرَاءَ وَالْمُعَاقِينَ وَالْعُرْجَ وَالْعُمْيَ؛ 14 فَتَكُونَ مُبَارَكاً لأَنَّ هؤُلاءِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مَا يُكَافِئُونَكَ بِهِ، فَإِنَّكَ تُكَافَأُ فِي قِيَامَةِ الأَبْرَارِ».

مَثل الوليمة العظيمة

15 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَ هَذَا أَحَدُ الْمُتَّكِئِينَ، قَالَ لَهُ: «طُوبَى لِمَنْ سَيَتَنَاوَلُ الطَّعَامَ فِي مَلَكُوتِ اللهِ!» 16 فَقَالَ لَهُ: «أَقَامَ إِنْسَانٌ عَشَاءً عَظِيماً، وَدَعَا كَثِيرِينَ. 17 ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ عَبْدَهُ سَاعَةَ الْعَشَاءِ لِيَقُولَ لِلْمَدْعُوِّينَ: تَعَالَوْا، فَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ جَاهِزٌ! 18 فَبَدَأَ الْجَمِيعُ يَعْتَذِرُونَ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ. فَقَالَ لَهُ أَوَّلُهُمْ: اشْتَرَيْتُ حَقْلاً، وَعَلَيَّ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ وَأَرَاهُ أَرْجُو مِنْكَ أَنْ تَعْذُرَنِي! 19 وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: اشْتَرَيْتُ خَمْسَةَ أَزْوَاجِ بَقَرٍ، وَأَنَا ذَاهِبٌ لأُجَرِّبَهَا أَرْجُو مِنْكَ أَنْ تَعْذُرَنِي! 20 وَقَالَ آخَرُ: تَزَوَّجْتُ بِامْرَأَةٍ، وَلِذلِكَ لَا أَقْدِرُ أَنْ أَحْضُرَ! 21 فَرَجَعَ الْعَبْدُ وَأَخْبَرَ سَيِّدَهُ بِذلِكَ. عِنْدَئِذٍ غَضِبَ رَبُّ الْبَيْتِ وَقَالَ لِعَبْدِهِ: اخْرُجْ سَرِيعاً إِلَى شَوَارِعِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَأَزِقَّتِهَا، وَأَحْضِرِ الْفُقَرَاءَ وَالْمُعَاقِينَ وَالْعُرْجَ وَالْعُمْيَ إِلَى هُنَا. 22 (فَرَجَعَ) الْخَادِمُ يَقُولُ: يَا سَيِّدُ، قَدْ جَرَى مَا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ، وَيُوجَدُ بَعْدُ مَكَانٌ. 23 فَقَالَ السَّيِّدُ لِلْعَبْدِ: اخْرُجْ إِلَى الطُّرُقِ وَالسَّاحَاتِ وَأَجْبِرِ النَّاسَ عَلَى الدُّخُولِ حَتَّى يَمْتَلِئَ بَيْتِي، 24 فَإِنِّي أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: إِنَّ وَاحِداً مِنْ أُولئِكَ الْمَدْعُوِّينَ لَنْ يَذُوقَ عَشَائِي!»

25 وَكَانَتْ جُمُوعٌ كَثِيرَةٌ تَسِيرُ مَعَهُ، فَالْتَفَتَ وَقَالَ لَهُمْ: 26 «إِنْ جَاءَ إِلَيَّ أَحَدٌ، وَلَمْ يُبْغِضْ أَبَاهُ وَأُمَّهُ وَزَوْجَتَهُ وَأَوْلادَهُ وَإِخْوَتَهُ وأَخَوَاتِهِ، بَلْ نَفْسَهُ أَيْضاً، فَلا يُمْكِنُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ تِلْمِيذاً لِي. 27 وَمَنْ لَا يَحْمِلُ صَلِيبَهُ وَيَتْبَعُنِي، فَلا يُمْكِنُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ تِلْمِيذاً لِي. 28 فَأَيٌّ مِنْكُمْ، وَهُوَ رَاغِبٌ فِي أَنْ يَبْنِيَ بُرْجاً، لَا يَجْلِسُ أَوَّلاً وَيَحْسِبُ الْكُلْفَةَ لِيَرَى هَلْ عِنْدَهُ مَا يَكْفِي لإِنْجَازِهِ؟ 29 وَذلِكَ لِئَلّا يَضَعَ لَهُ الأَسَاسَ وَلا يَقْدِرَ أَنْ يُنْجِزَهُ. أَفَلا يَأْخُذُ جَمِيعُ النَّاظِرِينَ يَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُ. 30 قَائِلِينَ: هَذَا الإِنْسَانُ شَرَعَ يَبْنِي وَعَجَزَ عَنِ الإِنْجَازِ؟ 31 أَمْ أَيُّ مَلِكٍ ذَاهِبٍ لِمُحَارَبَةِ آخَرَ، لَا يَجْلِسُ أَوَّلاً وَيَسْتَشِيرُ لِيَرَى هَلْ يَقْدِرُ أَنْ يُوَاجِهَ بِعَشَرَةِ آلافٍ ذلِكَ الزَّاحِفَ عَلَيْهِ بِعِشْرِينَ أَلْفاً. 32 وَإلَّا فَإِنَّهُ، وَالْعَدُوُّ مَازَالَ بَعِيداً، يُرْسِلُ إِلَيْهِ وَفْداً، طَالِباً مَا يَؤُولُ إِلَى الصُّلْحِ. 33 هكَذَا إِذَنْ، كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْكُمْ لَا يَهْجُرُ كُلَّ مَا يَمْلِكُهُ، لَا يُمْكِنُهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ تِلْمِيذاً لِي. 34 إِنَّمَا الْمِلْحُ جَيِّدٌ. وَلكِنْ إِذَا فَقَدَ الْمِلْحُ طَعْمَهُ، فَبِمَاذَا تُعَادُ إِلَيْهِ مُلُوحَتُهُ؟ 35 إِنَّهُ لَا يَصْلُحُ لَا لِلتُّرْبَةِ وَلا لِلسَّمَادِ، فَيُطْرَحُ خَارِجاً. مَنْ لَهُ أُذُنَانِ لِلسَّمْعِ، فَلْيَسْمَعْ!»
