1After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendour.2With a mighty voice he shouted: ‘ “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” She has become a dwelling for demons and a haunt for every impure spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal. (Isa 21:9)3For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.’
Warning to escape Babylon’s judgment
4Then I heard another voice from heaven say: ‘ “Come out of her, my people,” so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; (Jer 51:45)5for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.6Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.7Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts, “I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow;[1] I will never mourn.” (Isa 47:7; Isa 47:8)8Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
Threefold woe over Babylon’s fall
9‘When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her.10Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, you mighty city of Babylon! In one hour your doom has come!”11‘The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no-one buys their cargoes anymore –12cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;13cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.14‘They will say, “The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendour have vanished, never to be recovered.”15The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn16and cry out: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!17In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!” ‘Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.18When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, “Was there ever a city like this great city?”19They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out: ‘ “Woe! Woe to you, great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin!”20‘Rejoice over her, you heavens! Rejoice, you people of God! Rejoice, apostles and prophets! For God has judged her with the judgment she imposed on you.’
The finality of Babylon’s doom
21Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said: ‘With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again.22The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again. No worker of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again.23The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again. Your merchants were the world’s important people. By your magic spell all the nations were led astray.24In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.’
1După acestea, am văzut un alt înger care cobora din cer și care avea o mare autoritate. Pământul a fost luminat de slava lui.2El a strigat cu glas tare, zicând: „A căzut, a căzut marele Babilon, a devenit o locuință a demonilor, un adăpost pentru orice duh necurat, un adăpost pentru orice pasăre necurată, un adăpost pentru orice fiară necurată și detestată,3pentru că din vinul furiei curviei ei au băut toate neamurile, regii pământului au curvit cu ea, iar negustorii pământului s‑au îmbogățit din puterea senzualității[1] ei!“4Am auzit un alt glas din cer, zicând: „Ieși afară din ea, poporul Meu, ca să nu fii părtaș păcatelor ei și să nu primești din urgiile ei,5pentru că păcatele ei s‑au îngrămădit până la cer, iar Dumnezeu Și‑a adus aminte de nelegiuirile ei!6Răsplătiți‑i după cum i‑a răsplătit și ea pe alții și plătiți‑i înapoi dublu pentru faptele ei; în paharul în care a amestecat ea, amestecați‑i o porție dublă!7Dați‑i tot atâta chin și jale, pe cât s‑a slăvit ea pe sine și a trăit în senzualitate[2]! Pentru că zice în inima ei: «Șed ca o regină, nu sunt văduvă și nu voi vedea niciodată jalea!»8De aceea, urgiile vor veni asupra ei într‑o singură zi – moarte, jale și foamete – și va fi arsă în foc, pentru că Domnul Dumnezeu, Care o judecă, este puternic.9Împărații pământului, care au curvit cu ea și au trăit în senzualitate[3], o vor plânge și o vor boci când vor vedea fumul arderii ei.10Ei vor sta departe, de frica chinului ei, zicând: «Vai, vai, cetatea cea mare, Babilonul, cetatea cea puternică! Într‑un ceas a venit condamnarea ta!»11Negustorii pământului o plâng și o jelesc, pentru că nimeni nu le mai cumpără marfa:12marfă de aur, argint, pietre prețioase, perle; in fin, purpură, mătase și țesătură cărămizie; tot felul de lucruri din lemn de lămâi, tot felul de lucruri din fildeș, tot felul de lucruri din lemn prețios; bronz, fier și marmură;13scorțișoară, condimente, tămâie, parfum, tămâie scumpă, vin și ulei de măsline, făină aleasă, grâu, animale de povară, oi, cai, care, trupuri[4] și suflete ale oamenilor. (Ge 12:5)14Rodul după care tânjea sufletul tău s‑a dus de la tine; toate lucrurile tale luxoase și strălucitoare sunt pierdute pentru tine și niciodată nu vor mai fi găsite.15Cei ce fac comerț cu aceste lucruri, care s‑au îmbogățit de pe urma ei, vor sta departe, de frica chinului ei, plângând, jelindu‑se16și zicând: «Vai, vai, cetatea cea mare, îmbrăcată în in fin, în țesătură purpurie și cărămizie, împodobită cu aur, pietre prețioase și perle!17O bogăție atât de mare a fost distrusă într‑un singur ceas!» Orice căpitan de corabie, toți cei ce călătoresc pe mare, marinarii și cei care lucrează pe mare stăteau departe18și, văzând fumul arderii ei, strigau, zicând: «Care cetate a mai fost asemenea cetății celei mari?»19Și își aruncau țărână pe capete și strigau, plângând și jelindu‑se: «Vai, vai, cetatea cea mare, din prosperitatea căreia s‑au îmbogățit toți cei ce aveau corăbii pe mare! Într‑un ceas a fost pustiită!»20«Bucură‑te de ea, cerule! Bucurați‑vă și voi, sfinților, apostolilor și profeților, pentru că Dumnezeu a rostit judecata împotriva ei, în favoarea voastră!»“21Un înger puternic a luat o piatră, ca o piatră mare de moară, și a aruncat‑o în mare, zicând: „Cu o asemenea izbitură va fi aruncat Babilonul, marea cetate, încât niciodată nu va mai fi găsit!22Iar sunetul kitharozilor, al muzicienilor, al cântăreților la fluier și al trompetiștilor nu se va mai auzi niciodată în tine! Niciun meseriaș de nicio meserie, nu se va mai găsi vreodată în tine; sunetul morii nu se va mai auzi niciodată în tine;23lumina candelei nu va mai străluci niciodată în tine; glasul mirelui și al miresei nu se vor mai auzi niciodată în tine – pentru că negustorii tăi erau oamenii de seamă ai pământului, pentru că prin vrăjitoria ta au fost duse în rătăcire toate neamurile.24În ea s‑a găsit sângele profeților, al sfinților și al tuturor celor ce au fost uciși pe pământ!“
