1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[1]2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples3to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’4Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see:5the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[2] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10This is the one about whom it is written: ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” (Mal 3:1)11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[3] and violent people have been raiding it.13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.15Whoever has ears, let them hear.16‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others:17‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.”19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.’
Woe on unrepentant towns
20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.21‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[4] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’
The Father revealed in the Son
25At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.26Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.27‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.28‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’
1După ce a terminat de dat îndrumări[1] celor doisprezece ucenici ai Săi, Isus a plecat de acolo ca să dea învățătură și să predice în cetățile lor. (Lu 7:18)2Ioan, auzind în închisoare despre lucrările lui Cristos, a trimis un mesaj prin ucenicii săi,3zicându‑I: – Tu ești Cel Care urmează să vină sau să așteptăm pe altul?4Isus, răspunzând, le‑a zis: – Duceți‑vă și anunțați‑l pe Ioan cu privire la lucrurile pe care le auziți și le vedeți:5cei orbi văd, cei ologi umblă, cei leproși[2] sunt curățiți[3], cei surzi aud, cei morți sunt înviați, iar celor săraci li se vestește Evanghelia[4]. (Isa 29:18; Isa 35:5; Isa 61:1; Mt 8:2)6Fericit este cel care nu se poticnește în Mine!7După ce au plecat ei, Isus a început să le vorbească mulțimilor despre Ioan: „Ce ați ieșit să vedeți în pustie? O trestie clătinată de vânt?8Atunci, ce ați ieșit să priviți? Un om îmbrăcat în haine moi? Iată că cei ce poartă haine moi sunt în casele regilor!9Atunci, ce ați ieșit să priviți? Un profet? Vă spun că da, și chiar mai mult decât un profet!10Acesta este cel despre care a fost scris: «Iată, îl trimit înaintea feței Tale pe mesagerul Meu, care‑Ți va pregăti calea înaintea Ta![5]» (Mal 3:1)11Adevărat vă spun că, între cei născuți din femei, nu s‑a ridicat niciunul mai mare decât Ioan Botezătorul. Totuși, cel mai mic în Împărăția Cerurilor este mai mare decât el.12Din zilele lui Ioan Botezătorul și până acum, Împărăția Cerurilor se ia cu năvală, iar cei năvalnici pun mâna pe ea.[6] (Mic 2:12; Mal 3:1)13Căci toți profeții și Legea au profețit până la Ioan.14Și, dacă vreți să primiți ce spun, el este Ilie care urmează să vină![7] (Mal 4:5; Lu 1:17)15Cel ce are urechi, să audă!16Cu cine voi asemăna această generație? Sunt asemenea unor copii care stau în piețe, strigându‑le celorlalți:17«V‑am cântat din fluier, dar n‑ați dansat! V‑am cântat de jale, dar nu v‑ați tânguit!»18Căci a venit Ioan, nici mâncând, nici bând[8], iar ei zic: «Are demon!»19A venit Fiul Omului mâncând și bând, iar ei zic: «Iată un om mâncăcios și băutor de vin, un prieten al vameșilor și al păcătoșilor!» Totuși, înțelepciunea a fost îndreptățită prin faptele ei.“
Vai de cetățile nepocăite
20Atunci Isus a început să mustre cetățile în care fuseseră făcute cele mai multe dintre minunile Lui, pentru că nu se pocăiseră: (Lu 7:31; Lu 10:13)21„Vai de tine, Horazine! Vai de tine, Betsaido! Căci dacă ar fi fost făcute în Tyr și Sidon minunile care au fost făcute în voi, demult s‑ar fi pocăit stând în sac și cenușă!22Dar Eu vă spun că, în Ziua Judecății, va fi mai ușor pentru Tyr și Sidon decât pentru voi!23Iar tu, Capernaume, vei fi înălțat oare până la cer? Nu, ci vei coborî până în Locuința Morților[9]! Căci dacă ar fi fost făcute în Sodoma minunile făcute în tine, ea ar fi dăinuit până astăzi! (Isa 14:13; Isa 14:15)24De aceea vă spun că, în Ziua Judecății, va fi mai ușor pentru ținutul Sodomei decât pentru tine!“
Odihnă pentru cei trudiți și împovărați
25În vremea aceea, Isus, răspunzând, a zis: „Te laud[10], Tată, Domn al cerului și al pământului, pentru că ai ascuns aceste lucruri de cei înțelepți și pricepuți și le‑ai descoperit copilașilor. (Lu 10:21)26Da, Tată, pentru că așa a fost plăcut înaintea Ta!27Toate lucrurile Mi‑au fost încredințate Mie de către Tatăl Meu. Și nimeni nu‑L cunoaște pe Fiul în afară de Tatăl, nici nu există cineva care să‑L cunoască pe Tatăl în afară de Fiul și de cel căruia dorește Fiul să i‑L descopere.28Veniți la Mine, toți cei osteniți și împovărați, și Eu vă voi da odihnă!29Luați jugul Meu asupra voastră și învățați de la Mine, pentru că Eu sunt blând și smerit în inimă, și veți găsi odihnă pentru sufletele voastre!30Căci jugul Meu este ușor de dus, iar povara Mea este ușoară.“
