Israel doubts God’s love
2‘I have loved you,’ says the Lord. ‘But you ask, “How have you loved us?” ‘Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?’ declares the Lord. ‘Yet I have loved Jacob,3but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.’4Edom may say, ‘Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.’ But this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord.5You will see it with your own eyes and say, “Great is the Lord – even beyond the borders of Israel!”
Breaking covenant through blemished sacrifices
6‘A son honours his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honour due to me? If I am a master, where is the respect due to me?’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘It is you priests who show contempt for my name. ‘But you ask, “How have we shown contempt for your name?”7‘By offering defiled food on my altar. ‘But you ask, “How have we defiled you?” ‘By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible.8When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?’ says the Lord Almighty.9‘Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?’ – says the Lord Almighty.10‘Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will accept no offering from your hands.11My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,’ says the Lord Almighty.12‘But you profane it by saying, “The Lord’s table is defiled,” and, “Its food is contemptible.”13And you say, “What a burden!” and you sniff at it contemptuously,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?’ says the Lord.14‘Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and my name is to be feared among the nations.

Întâietatea lui Iacov
2„V‑am iubit! zice DOMNUL. Dar voi întrebați: «Cum ne‑ai iubit?» N‑a fost Esau fratele lui Iacov? zice DOMNUL. Și totuși pe Iacov l‑am iubit,3dar pe Esau l‑am urât. I‑am prefăcut munții într‑o pustietate, iar moștenirea lui am dat‑o șacalilor din pustie.“4Dacă Edom ar zice: „Suntem doborâți, dar ne vom întoarce și vom rezidi ruinele!“, atunci așa vorbește DOMNUL Oștirilor[2]: „Ce vor rezidi ei, voi dărâma Eu. Și vor fi numiți: «Teritoriul Răutății, Poporul pe care DOMNUL este indignat pentru totdeauna». (Ge 2:1; Ex 7:4; De 4:19; Jos 5:14; 1Ki 22:19; Ps 44:9; Ps 148:2; Isa 40:26)5Veți vedea lucrul acesta cu ochii voștri și veți zice: «Mărit să fie DOMNUL dincolo de hotarele lui Israel!»
Un cuvânt de mustrare pentru preoți
6Un fiu îl cinstește pe tatăl său și un rob îi dă cinste stăpânului său. Dacă sunt Tată, unde este cinstea care Mi se cuvine? Și dacă sunt Stăpân, unde este teama față de Mine? vă spune DOMNUL Oștirilor vouă, preoților, care disprețuiți Numele Meu. Voi însă spuneți: «Cum Ți‑am disprețuit noi Numele?»7Aducând pe altarul Meu hrană pângărită. Dar voi întrebați: «Cum Te‑am pângărit?» Spunând că masa DOMNULUI este de disprețuit[3].8Când aduceți ca jertfă animale oarbe, nu este acesta un lucru rău? Iar când aduceți animale șchioape sau bolnave, nu este acesta un lucru rău?[4] Încearcă să le aduci guvernatorului tău! Va fi el oare mulțumit de tine? Te va lua el în seamă? zice DOMNUL Oștirilor. (Le 22:17)9Și acum, căutați fața lui Dumnezeu ca să‑Și arate bunăvoința față de noi. Vă va lua El în seamă de vreme ce mâinile voastre aduc astfel de daruri?[5], zice DOMNUL Oștirilor.10O, de ar închide careva dintre voi porțile Templului, ca să nu mai aprindeți degeaba focul pe altarul Meu! Nu‑Mi găsesc nicio plăcere în voi, zice DOMNUL Oștirilor, și nu voi accepta niciun dar de mâncare din mâinile voastre.11Căci de la răsăritul soarelui și până la asfințitul lui[6] Numele Meu este mare printre neamuri. Și în orice loc se arde tămâie în cinstea Numelui Meu, și se aduc daruri de mâncare curate, căci Numele Meu este[7] mare printre neamuri, zice DOMNUL Oștirilor.12Dar voi Îl batjocoriți, zicând: «Masa Domnului este pângărită și rodul ei este o hrană de disprețuit![8]»13Voi ziceți: «Iată, ce osteneală!» și vă strâmbați la ea[9], zice DOMNUL Oștirilor. Apoi aduceți ce a fost luat prin jaf, ce este șchiop sau bolnav. Da, astfel de daruri de mâncare aduceți! Să le primesc Eu din mâinile voastre? zice DOMNUL.14Blestemat să fie înșelătorul care are în turma sa un mascul sănătos și care, deși jură că‑l va aduce pe acesta, totuși îl jertfește Domnului pe cel cu meteahnă. Căci Eu sunt un Împărat mare, zice DOMNUL Oștirilor, și Numele Meu este de temut printre neamuri.
