1Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,2and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve.4And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.5They were delighted and agreed to give him money.6He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper
7Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.’9‘Where do you want us to prepare for it?’ they asked.10He replied, ‘As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters,11and say to the owner of the house, “The Teacher asks: where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”12He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.’13They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.14When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.15And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.’17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you.18For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.[1]21But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.22The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!’23They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.25Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.28You are those who have stood by me in my trials.29And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.31‘Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.’33But he replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’34Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.’35Then Jesus asked them, ‘When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?’ ‘Nothing,’ they answered.36He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.37It is written: “And he was numbered with the transgressors”; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfilment.’ (Isa 53:12)38The disciples said, ‘See, Lord, here are two swords.’ ‘That’s enough!’ he replied.
Jesus prays on the Mount of Olives
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.40On reaching the place, he said to them, ‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation.’41He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,42‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[2]45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.46‘Why are you sleeping?’ he asked them. ‘Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.’
Jesus arrested
47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,48but Jesus asked him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?’49When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, ‘Lord, should we strike with our swords?’50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.51But Jesus answered, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, ‘Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour – when darkness reigns.’
Peter disowns Jesus
54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.55And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them.56A servant-girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, ‘This man was with him.’57But he denied it. ‘Woman, I don’t know him,’ he said.58A little later someone else saw him and said, ‘You also are one of them.’ ‘Man, I am not!’ Peter replied.59About an hour later another asserted, ‘Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.’60Peter replied, ‘Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ Just as he was speaking, the cock crowed.61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the cock crows today, you will disown me three times.’62And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The guards mock Jesus
63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.64They blindfolded him and demanded, ‘Prophesy! Who hit you?’65And they said many other insulting things to him.
Jesus before Pilate and Herod
66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.67‘If you are the Messiah,’ they said, ‘tell us.’ Jesus answered, ‘If I tell you, you will not believe me,68and if I asked you, you would not answer.69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.’70They all asked, ‘Are you then the Son of God?’ He replied, ‘You say that I am.’71Then they said, ‘Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.’
1Se apropia Sărbătoarea Azimelor, căreia i se spune „Paștele“.[1] (Le 23:5; Eze 45:21; Mt 26:1; Mt 26:14; Mr 14:1; Mr 14:10; Joh 11:45)2Conducătorii preoților și cărturarii căutau cum să‑L omoare pe Isus, dar se temeau de popor.3Atunci Satan[2] a intrat în Iuda, numit „Iscarioteanul“, care era din numărul celor doisprezece. (Lu 10:18)4Acesta s‑a dus la conducătorii preoților și la comandanții gărzii Templului și au discutat despre cum să‑L dea pe mâna lor.5Ei s‑au bucurat și s‑au înțeles cu el să‑i dea argint[3]. (Mt 26:15)6El a încuviințat și căuta un prilej potrivit ca să‑L dea pe mâna lor, în lipsa mulțimii.
Masa pascală
7Apoi a venit ziua Sărbătorii Azimelor, zi în care trebuia jertfit mielul de Paște. (Mt 26:17; Mr 14:12; Joh 13:21; 1Co 11:23)8Isus i‑a trimis înainte pe Petru și pe Ioan, zicând: – Duceți‑vă și pregătiți‑ne jertfa de Paște, ca s‑o mâncăm!9Ei L‑au întrebat: – Unde vrei s‑o pregătim?10El le‑a răspuns: – Iată, când veți intra în cetate, vă va întâmpina un om care duce un vas cu apă.[4] Urmați‑l până la casa în care va intra11și spuneți‑i stăpânului casei astfel: „Învățătorul te întreabă: «Unde este camera de oaspeți în care urmează să mănânc Paștele împreună cu ucenicii Mei?»“12El vă va arăta sus o cameră mare și aranjată. Acolo să faceți pregătirile!13Ei s‑au dus și au găsit totul așa cum le spusese Isus. Și au pregătit Paștele.
Cina Domnului
14Când a sosit ceasul, Isus S‑a așezat să mănânce împreună cu apostolii. (Mt 26:20; Mr 14:17; Joh 13:21; 1Co 11:23)15El le‑a zis: „Am dorit cu ardoare să mănânc împreună cu voi acest Paște, înainte de suferința Mea!16Căci vă spun că nu voi mai mânca din el până când nu își va găsi împlinirea în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu!“17Și luând un pahar, a mulțumit[5] și a zis: „Luați‑l și împărțiți‑l între voi!18Căci vă spun că, de acum încolo, nu voi mai bea din rodul viței până când va veni Împărăția lui Dumnezeu.“19Apoi a luat o pâine și, după ce a mulțumit, a frânt‑o și le‑a dat‑o, zicând: „Acesta este trupul Meu, care se dă pentru voi. Să faceți lucrul acesta spre amintirea[6] Mea!“20În același fel, după ce au mâncat, a luat paharul și a zis: „Acest pahar este Legământul cel Nou în sângele Meu, care este vărsat pentru voi.21Dar iată că mâna trădătorului Meu este cu Mine la masă!22Căci într-adevăr, Fiul Omului Se duce după cum a fost hotărât, dar vai de omul acela prin care El este trădat!“23Ei au început să se întrebe unii pe alții cine să fie oare acela dintre ei care urmează să facă lucrul acesta.
Cine este cel mai mare
24Între ei a avut loc și o ceartă cu privire la cine să fie considerat cel mai mare dintre ei. (Mt 19:28; Mt 20:25; Mr 10:42)25Atunci Isus le‑a zis: – Regii neamurilor stăpânesc peste ele, iar cei ce au autoritate asupra lor sunt numiți „binefăcători“[7].26Dar voi să nu fiți așa! Dimpotrivă, cel mai mare dintre voi să fie precum cel mai mic, iar cel care conduce să fie precum cel care slujește.27Căci cine este mai mare, cel care șade la masă sau cel care slujește? Oare nu cel care șade la masă? Eu însă sunt între voi precum Cel Care slujește!28Voi sunteți cei care ați rămas cu Mine în încercările[8] Mele.29De aceea și Eu vă ofer o împărăție, așa cum și Tatăl Meu Mi‑a oferit‑o Mie,30ca să mâncați și să beți la masa Mea, în Împărăția Mea, și să stați pe tronuri, judecând cele douăsprezece seminții ale lui Israel.
Isus prezice lepădarea lui Petru
31Simone, Simone, iată, Satan a cerut să vă cearnă așa cum se cerne grâul, (Mt 26:31; Mr 14:27; Joh 13:36)32dar Eu M‑am rugat fierbinte pentru tine, ca să nu ți se piardă credința. Iar când te vei întoarce, întărește‑i pe frații tăi!33Petru I‑a răspuns: – Doamne, sunt gata să merg cu Tine chiar și la închisoare, și la moarte!34Isus i‑a zis: – Îți spun, Petru, că nu va cânta cocoșul[9] astăzi până nu te vei lepăda de trei ori că nu Mă cunoști.
Îndemnuri pentru vremea încercării
35Apoi le‑a zis: – Când v‑am trimis fără săculeți cu bani, fără traistă și fără sandale, ați dus voi lipsă de ceva? Ei au zis: – De nimic.36El le‑a zis: – Acum, dimpotrivă, cel ce are un săculeț cu bani, să‑l ia! La fel și traista! Iar cel ce nu are sabie, să‑și vândă haina și să‑și cumpere una![10]37Căci vă spun că ceea ce este scris trebuie să se împlinească în Mine, și anume: „El a fost numărat alături de cei fără de Lege.“[11] Da, ce este scris despre Mine ajunge la împlinire. (Isa 53:12)38Ei au zis: – Doamne, iată aici două săbii! El le‑a zis: – De‑ajuns![12]
Isus Se roagă pe Muntele Măslinilor
39Și ieșind afară, S‑a dus, ca de obicei, spre Muntele Măslinilor. Ucenicii L‑au urmat și ei. (Mt 26:36; Mr 14:32)40Când a ajuns în locul acela, le‑a zis: – Rugați‑vă să nu cădeți[13] în ispită!41Apoi S‑a retras de lângă ei, cam la o aruncătură de piatră, și, punându‑Se în genunchi, Se ruga,42zicând: „Tată, dacă vrei, îndepărtează de la Mine paharul[14] acesta! Totuși, facă‑se nu voia Mea, ci a Ta!“ (Isa 51:17; Jer 25:15; Eze 23:32; Mt 20:22)43Atunci I s‑a arătat un înger din cer, ca să‑L întărească.44Fiind în agonie[15], El Se ruga cu și mai multă ardoare, iar sudoarea Lui devenise ca niște picături de sânge, care cădeau pe pământ.45Când S‑a ridicat de la rugăciune și a venit la ucenici, i‑a găsit adormiți de întristare.46El le‑a zis: – De ce dormiți? Sculați‑vă și rugați‑vă, ca să nu cădeți în ispită!
Arestarea lui Isus
47În timp ce El încă vorbea, iată că a venit o mulțime de oameni, iar cel numit Iuda, unul dintre cei doisprezece, mergea înaintea lor. El s‑a apropiat de Isus ca să‑L sărute, (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:43; Joh 18:3)48dar Isus i‑a zis: „Iuda, cu un sărut Îl trădezi[16] tu pe Fiul Omului?“49Când cei din jurul lui Isus au văzut ce urma să se întâmple, au zis: – Doamne, să lovim cu sabia?50Și unul dintre ei l‑a lovit cu sabia pe sclavul marelui preot, tăindu‑i urechea dreaptă.51Însă Isus, răspunzând, a zis: – Lăsați‑i! Până aici! Și atingându‑Se de urechea acelui om, l‑a vindecat.52Apoi Isus le‑a zis conducătorilor preoților, comandanților gărzii Templului și bătrânilor, care veniseră împotriva Lui: „Ați ieșit cu săbii și ciomege, ca după un răsculat[17]?53În fiecare zi când eram cu voi în Templu, n‑ați întins mâinile împotriva Mea! Însă acesta este ceasul vostru și autoritatea întunericului.“
Lepădarea lui Petru
54Atunci, arestându‑L, L‑au dus și L‑au băgat în casa marelui preot. Petru Îl urma de departe. (Mt 26:67; Mr 14:66; Joh 18:15; Joh 18:25)55După ce au aprins un foc în mijlocul curții și au stat jos, Petru s‑a așezat în mijlocul lor.56O slujnică, văzându‑l șezând lângă foc, s‑a uitat atent la el și a zis: – Și acesta era cu El!57Dar el a negat, zicând: – Nu‑L cunosc, femeie!58După puțin timp, l‑a văzut altcineva, care a zis: – Și tu ești unul dintre ei! Dar Petru a zis: – Nu sunt, omule!59Cam o oră mai târziu, un altul a susținut cu tărie, zicând: – Cu siguranță și acesta era cu El, căci este galileean.60Dar Petru a zis: – Omule, nu știu despre ce vorbești! Și deodată, în timp ce el încă vorbea, a cântat cocoșul.61Domnul S‑a întors și S‑a uitat la Petru. Atunci Petru și‑a adus aminte de cuvântul pe care i‑l spusese Domnul: „Astăzi, înainte de cântatul cocoșului, te vei lepăda de Mine de trei ori!“62Și ieșind afară, a plâns cu amar.
Isus, batjocorit de cei din garda Templului
63Oamenii, cei care‑L păzeau pe Isus, Îl batjocoreau și‑L băteau. (Mt 26:67; Mr 14:65)64Și legându‑L la ochi, Îl întrebau, zicând: „Profețește, cine este cel ce Te‑a lovit?“65Și rosteau multe alte blasfemii împotriva Lui.
Isus înaintea Sinedriului
66Când s‑a făcut ziuă, Sfatul bătrânilor poporului[18], conducătorii preoților și cărturarii s‑au adunat și L‑au dus pe Isus în sinedriul[19] lor. (Mt 26:59; Mr 14:55; Lu 9:22; Joh 18:19)67Ei au zis: – Dacă Tu ești Cristosul, spune‑ne! Isus le‑a răspuns: – Dacă vă voi spune, nicidecum nu veți crede,68iar dacă vă voi întreba, nicidecum nu‑Mi veți răspunde, nici nu‑Mi veți da drumul.69Dar, de acum încolo, Fiul Omului va fi așezat la dreapta puterii lui Dumnezeu.[20] (Ps 110:1; Da 7:13)70Toți au întrebat: – Ești Tu deci Fiul lui Dumnezeu? El le‑a răspuns: – Chiar voi înșivă spuneți că Eu sunt.71Atunci ei au zis: – Ce nevoie mai avem de mărturie?! Căci noi înșine am auzit‑o din gura Lui!
