1Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, ‘Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?’ And they challenged him vigorously.2But he answered them, ‘What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer?3God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?’ At this, their resentment against him subsided.4Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it.5He said to the men of Sukkoth, ‘Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.’6But the officials of Sukkoth said, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?’7Then Gideon replied, ‘Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.’8From there he went up to Peniel[1] and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had.9So he said to the men of Peniel, ‘When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.’10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen.11Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the unsuspecting army.12Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.13Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres.14He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth, the elders of the town.15Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, ‘Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?” ’16He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers.17He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.18Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, ‘What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?’ ‘Men like you,’ they answered, ‘each one with the bearing of a prince.’19Gideon replied, ‘Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.’20Turning to Jether, his eldest son, he said, ‘Kill them!’ But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.21Zebah and Zalmunna said, ‘Come, do it yourself. “As is the man, so is his strength.” ’ So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments off their camels’ necks.
Gideon’s ephod
22The Israelites said to Gideon, ‘Rule over us – you, your son and your grandson – because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.’23But Gideon told them, ‘I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.’24And he said, ‘I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.’ (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)25They answered, ‘We’ll be glad to give them.’ So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it.26The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,[2] not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels’ necks.27Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshipping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.
Gideon’s death
28Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace for forty years.29Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live.30He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives.31His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek.32Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.33No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god34and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.35They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.

Ghedeon îi omoară pe regii midianiți
4Apoi Ghedeon a ajuns la Iordan și l‑a traversat împreună cu cei trei sute de bărbați care erau cu el, obosiți, dar încă în urmărirea dușmanului.5El le‑a zis oamenilor din Sucot: – Dați‑le, vă rog, câteva bucăți de pâine oamenilor care sunt cu mine, căci sunt obosiți și suntem încă în urmărirea lui Zebah și Țalmuna, regii Midianului.6Căpeteniile din Sucot i‑au răspuns: – Sunt deja Zebah și Țalmuna în mâna ta, ca să dăm pâine oștirii tale?7Ghedeon le‑a zis: – Ei bine, după ce DOMNUL îi va da pe Zebah și pe Țalmuna în mâinile mele, vă voi treiera carnea cu spinii pustiei și cu mărăcini.8De acolo s‑au suit la Peniel și a cerut același lucru. Oamenii din Peniel i‑au răspuns așa cum îi răspunseseră oamenii din Sucot.9Atunci el le‑a vorbit oamenilor din Peniel, zicând: „Când mă voi întoarce în pace vă voi dărâma turnul acesta!“10Zebah și Țalmuna erau în Karkor, împreună cu ei fiind și tabăra lor, în jur de cincisprezece mii de bărbați, toți cei ce mai rămăseseră din toată tabăra fiilor Răsăritului, căci căzuseră uciși o sută douăzeci de mii de războinici.11Ghedeon s‑a suit pe drumul celor ce locuiesc în corturi, la răsărit de Nobah și Iogbeha, și a atacat tabăra în timp ce aceasta se credea în siguranță.12Zebah și Țalmuna au fugit, dar el i‑a urmărit și i‑a capturat pe cei doi regi ai Midianului, Zebah și Țalmuna. Și a pus pe fugă toată tabăra.13Apoi Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaș, s‑a întors de la luptă prin trecătoarea Heres.14A prins un tânăr dintre oamenii din Sucot căruia i‑a pus câteva întrebări. Acesta i‑a dat în scris numele căpeteniilor și bătrânilor[1] Sucotului. Erau șaptezeci și șapte de bărbați. (De 19:12; De 21:1; De 21:18; De 22:13; De 25:5; Jos 8:10; 2Sa 3:17; 2Sa 5:3; 2Sa 17:4; 1Ki 20:7)15S‑a dus la oamenii din Sucot și le‑a zis: „Iată‑i pe Zebah și Țalmuna din cauza cărora m‑ați batjocorit, zicând: «Sunt deja Zebah și Țalmuna în mâna ta, ca să dăm pâine oamenilor tăi obosiți?»“16I‑a luat pe bătrânii cetății, a luat spini din pustie și mărăcini și i‑a pedepsit cu ei pe oamenii din Sucot.17Apoi a dărâmat turnul din Peniel și i‑a ucis pe oamenii cetății.18După aceea le‑a zis lui Zebah și Țalmuna: – Cum erau bărbații pe care i‑ați ucis la Tabor? Ei i‑au răspuns: – Erau ca tine. Fiecare era la înfățișare ca un fiu de rege.19El le‑a zis: – Erau frații mei, fiii mamei mele. Viu este DOMNUL că dacă i‑ați fi lăsat în viață, nu v‑aș ucide acum.20Și i‑a zis lui Ieter, întâiul lui născut: – Ridică‑te și ucide‑i! Dar tânărul nu a scos sabia pentru că îi era teamă, fiind încă un copil.21Atunci Zebah și Țalmuna i‑au zis: – De ce nu ne omori tu însuți? Cum este omul așa este și puterea lui! Ghedeon s‑a ridicat și i‑a ucis pe Zebah și pe Țalmuna, luând apoi lunișoarele[2] care erau la gâtul cămilelor lor.
Idolatria lui Ghedeon și a poporului
22Bărbații lui Israel i‑au zis lui Ghedeon: – Stăpânește tu peste noi, tu, fiul tău și fiul fiului tău, căci ne‑ai izbăvit din mâna lui Midian.23Ghedeon le‑a răspuns: – Nu eu voi stăpâni peste voi și nici fiul meu nu va stăpâni peste voi, ci DOMNUL va stăpâni peste voi.24Ghedeon le‑a zis: – Doresc însă să vă cer ceva: dați‑mi fiecare câte un cercel din prada voastră. Dușmanii lor purtaseră cercei de aur, pentru că fuseseră ismaeliți.25Ei i‑au răspuns: – Desigur, ți‑i vom da! Apoi au așternut o învelitoare și fiecare om a aruncat pe ea cerceii luați ca pradă.26Greutatea cerceilor de aur pe care i‑a cerut a ajuns la o mie șapte sute de șecheli[3] de aur, în afară de lunișoare, ornamente și hainele de purpură pe care le purtau regii Midianului și în afară de lănțișoarele de la gâtul cămilelor lor. (2Sa 14:26)27Ghedeon a făcut din ei un efod[4] pe care l‑a pus în cetatea sa, la Ofra. Tot Israelul s‑a prostituat, închinându‑se la el acolo. El a devenit o cursă pentru Ghedeon și familia lui.
Moartea lui Ghedeon
28Astfel, Midianul a fost supus înaintea fiilor lui Israel și n‑a mai îndrăznit să‑și ridice capul. Și țara a avut liniște timp de patruzeci de ani, în zilele lui Ghedeon.29Apoi Ierub-Baal, fiul lui Ioaș, s‑a retras și a locuit în casa lui.30Ghedeon a avut șaptezeci de fii, ieșiți din coapsa lui, căci a avut multe soții.31Țiitoarea lui din Șehem i‑a născut și ea un fiu, căruia el i‑a pus numele Abimelek[5].32Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaș, a murit după o bătrânețe fericită și a fost înmormântat în mormântul lui Ioaș, tatăl său, în Ofra abiezriților.33După ce a murit Ghedeon, fiii lui Israel s‑au întors la păcatele dinainte, prostituându‑se înaintea BAALILOR[6]. Ei l‑au înălțat pe BAAL-BERIT[7] ca dumnezeu al lor. (Jud 2:11)34Astfel, fiii lui Israel nu și‑au adus aminte de DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lor, Care îi eliberase din mâna tuturor dușmanilor dimprejur35și nici n‑au fost loiali familiei lui Ierub-Baal, adică Ghedeon, în pofida binelui pe care el îl făcuse lui Israel.
