1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.

Trials and temptations

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,^[1] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. 9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation – since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13 When tempted, no-one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Listening and doing

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do. 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

2 Frații mei, să considerați ca având parte de cea mai mare bucurie atunci când treceți prin felurite ispite^[3], 3 știind că testarea credinței voastre lucrează răbdare. 4 Dar lăsați răbdarea să‑și facă desăvârșit lucrarea, ca să fiți desăvârșiți^[4] și întregi, fără să vă lipsească nimic. 5 Dacă vreunuia dintre voi îi lipsește înțelepciunea, s‑o ceară de la Dumnezeu, Care dă tuturor cu generozitate și fără să mustre, și ea îi va fi dată. 6 Dar s‑o ceară cu credință, fără să se îndoiască deloc, fiindcă cel ce se îndoiește este ca valul mării, purtat de vânt și împins încoace și încolo. 7 Un astfel de om să nu se aștepte să primească ceva de la Domnul, 8 fiindcă este un om șovăielnic, nestatornic în toate căile lui. 9 Fratele care este într‑o situație smerită să se laude cu înălțarea lui. 10 Cel bogat însă să se laude cu smerirea lui, pentru că el va trece ca floarea ierbii. 11 Soarele răsare cu căldura lui arzătoare și usucă iarba; floarea ei cade și frumusețea înfățișării ei piere. Așa se va veșteji și cel bogat în căutările lui. 12 Fericit este omul care îndură ispita^[5]! Căci, după ce a fost dovedit bun^[6], va primi coroana vieții, pe care Domnul a promis‑o celor ce‑L iubesc. 13 Nimeni, când este ispitit, să nu zică: „Sunt ispitit^[7] de Dumnezeu!“ Căci Dumnezeu nu poate fi ispitit de rău și El nu ispitește pe nimeni. 14 Ci fiecare este ispitit atunci când este atras de propria lui poftă și momit^[8]. 15 Atunci pofta, concepând^[9], dă naștere păcatului, iar păcatul, odată înfăptuit, produce^[10] moartea. 16 Nu vă înșelați, frații mei preaiubiți! 17 Orice dăruire^[11] bună și orice dar desăvârșit este de sus, coborând de la Tatăl luminilor, la Care nu există schimbare sau umbră din cauza mișcării^[12]. 18 El ne‑a născut prin Cuvântul adevărului, potrivit cu voia Lui, ca să fim un fel de prim rod între făpturile Lui.

Împlinitori ai Cuvântului

19 Frații mei preaiubiți, să știți aceste lucruri: orice om să fie grabnic la ascultare, încet la vorbire și încet la mânie; 20 căci mânia omului nu lucrează dreptatea lui Dumnezeu. 21 De aceea, dați la o parte orice necurăție și orice revărsare de răutate și primiți cu blândețe Cuvântul sădit în voi, care are putere să vă mântuiască sufletele. 22 Fiți împlinitori ai Cuvântului, și nu doar ascultători, înșelându‑vă singuri. 23 Căci dacă cineva este ascultător al Cuvântului, dar nu și împlinitor, atunci el se aseamănă cu un om care‑și privește propria față^[13] într‑o oglindă: 24 s‑a privit, a plecat și a uitat imediat cum era. 25 Însă, cel ce‑și apleacă privirea în legea desăvârșită – legea libertății – și perseverează în ea, devenind nu un ascultător uituc, ci un împlinitor prin faptă, acela va fi fericit în lucrarea lui^[14]. (Jos 1:8) 26 Dacă cineva crede că este religios, dar nu‑și ține în frâu limba, înșelându‑și astfel inima, religia lui este fără folos. 27 Religia curată și nepângărită înaintea lui Dumnezeu Tatăl^[15] este aceasta: să‑i vizitezi^[16] pe orfani și pe văduve în necazul lor și să te păstrezi pe tine însuți neîntinat de lume.
