Jerusalem’s deliverance foretold

1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 3 They told him, ‘This is what Hezekiah says: this day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.’ 5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, ‘Tell your master, “This is what the Lord says: do not be afraid of what you have heard – those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.” ’ 8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah. 9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,^[1] was marching out to fight against him. When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10 ‘Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, “Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.” 11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them – the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?’

Hezekiah’s prayer

14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: 16 ‘Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17 Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God. 18 ‘It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands. 19 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 20 Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are the only God.^[2]’ (2Ki 19:19)

Sennacherib’s fall

21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word the Lord has spoken against him: ‘Virgin Daughter Zion despises and mocks you. Daughter Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee. 23 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! 24 By your messengers you have ridiculed the Lord. And you have said, “With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its junipers. I have reached its remotest heights, the finest of its forests. 25 I have dug wells in foreign lands^[3] and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.” (2Ki 19:24) 26 ‘Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. 27 Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched^[4] before it grows up. (2Ki 19:26) 28 ‘But I know where you are and when you come and go and how you rage against me. 29 Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came. 30 ‘This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: ‘This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 31 Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. 32 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. 33 ‘Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. 34 By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,’ declares the Lord. 35 ‘I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!’ 36 Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning – there were all the dead bodies! 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. 38 One day, while he was worshipping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

De aceea înalță o rugăciune pentru cei care au mai rămas!“ 5 Când slujitorii regelui Ezechia au venit la Isaia, 6 acesta le‑a zis: – Să‑i spuneți astfel stăpânului vostru: „Așa vorbește DOMNUL: «Să nu te temi din cauza cuvintelor pe care le‑ai auzit și cu care slujitorii împăratului Asiriei M‑au blasfemiat. 7 Iată, voi pune în el un duh și astfel, la auzirea unui zvon, se va întoarce în țara lui. Și‑l voi face să cadă ucis de sabie în țara lui.»“ 8 Când Rab‑Șache a auzit că împăratul Asiriei plecase din Lachiș, s‑a întors și l‑a găsit pe acesta luptând împotriva Libnei. 9 După aceea, împăratul Asiriei a auzit că Tirhaka, regele din Cuș^[1], a ieșit să lupte împotriva lui. Când a auzit lucrul acesta a trimis mesageri la Ezechia, zicând: 10 „Așa să‑i vorbiți lui Ezechia, regele lui Iuda: «Nu‑L lăsa pe Dumnezeul tău, în Care te încrezi, să te amăgească, zicând: ‘Ierusalimul nu va fi dat în mâna împăratului Asiriei.’ 11 Iată, ai auzit ce au făcut împărații Asiriei tuturor țărilor cucerite, dându‑le spre nimicire^[2]. Vei scăpa tu oare? 12 Și‑au salvat, oare, dumnezeii neamurile pe care părinții mei le‑au distrus: pe Gozan, pe Haran, pe Rețef și pe fiii lui Eden, care erau în Tel‑Asar? 13 Unde este regele Hamatului, regele Arpadului și regele cetății Sefarvayim, al Henei sau al Ivei?»“

Rugăciunea lui Ezechia

14 Ezechia a luat scrisoarea din mâna mesagerilor și a citit‑o. Apoi s‑a suit la Casa DOMNULUI și a întins scrisoarea înaintea DOMNULUI. 15 Ezechia s‑a rugat DOMNULUI, zicând: 16 „O, DOAMNE al Oștirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Tu, Care tronezi deasupra heruvimilor! Tu ești singurul Dumnezeu al tuturor regatelor pământului! Tu ai făcut cerurile și pământul! 17 DOAMNE, pleacă‑Ți urechea și ascultă! DOAMNE, deschide‑Ți ochii și privește! Auzi toate cuvintele pe care Sanherib le‑a trimis ca să‑L batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel Viu! 18 DOAMNE, este adevărat că împărații Asiriei au pustiit toate țările și teritoriul lor, 19 și că le‑au aruncat dumnezeii în foc, însă ei i‑au distrus pentru că nu erau Dumnezeu, ci lucrări făcute de mâna omului; erau doar lemn și piatră. 20 Acum, DOAMNE, Dumnezeul nostru, izbăvește‑ne din mâna lui, ca să știe toate regatele pământului că doar Tu ești DOMNUL!“

Profeția lui Isaia asupra lui Sanherib

21 Atunci Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, a trimis la Ezechia să i se spună: „Așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Pentru că Mi te‑ai rugat cu privire la Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, (2Ki 19:20) 22 iată care este cuvântul pe care l‑a rostit DOMNUL împotriva acestuia: Fecioara, fiica Sionului, te disprețuiește și își bate joc de tine. Fiica Ierusalimului dă din cap în timp ce fugi.^[3] 23 Pe Cine ai batjocorit și ai blasfemiat tu? Împotriva Cui ți‑ai ridicat glasul? Împotriva Cui ți‑ai înălțat mândru privirea? Împotriva Sfântului lui Israel! 24 Prin slujitorii tăi L‑ai batjocorit pe Stăpânul și ai zis: ‘Cu mulțimea carelor mele am urcat pe înălțimile munților până la cele mai înalte piscuri ale Libanului! I‑am tăiat cei mai înalți cedri și cei mai aleși chiparoși. Am ajuns la cele mai înalte piscuri și la pădurea cea mai deasă. 25 Am săpat fântâni și am băut apă, și cu tălpile picioarelor mele am secat toate pâraiele Egiptului.’ 26 N‑ai auzit? Eu l‑am făcut demult; din zile străvechi l‑am întocmit. Acum însă l‑am adus să se împlinească, astfel încât tu să prefaci cetățile fortificate în mormane de dărâmături. 27 Locuitorii lor sunt neputincioși, sunt înspăimântați și făcuți de rușine. Au ajuns ca iarba de pe câmp și ca verdeața fragedă, ca iarba de pe acoperișuri, care se usucă înainte să crească. 28 Dar Eu știu unde stai, când ieși și când intri și cât ești de furios pe Mine. 29 Pentru că te‑ai mâniat pe Mine și pentru că trufia ta a ajuns la urechile Mele, voi pune veriga Mea în nasul tău și zăbala Mea în gura ta și te voi întoarce pe drumul pe care ai venit. 30 Acesta va fi semnul pentru tine, Ezechia: anul acesta o să mâncați ce va crește de la sine, iar în al doilea an – ce va răsări din ce a rămas. Dar în al treilea an veți semăna și veți secera, veți planta vii și le veți mânca roadele. 31 Supraviețuitorii Casei lui Iuda, cei rămași, vor prinde iarăși rădăcini dedesubt și vor da rod deasupra. 32 Căci din Ierusalim va ieși o rămășiță și din muntele Sion o ceată de supraviețuitori. Râvna DOMNULUI Oștirilor va face lucrul acesta.» 33 De aceea așa vorbește DOMNUL cu privire la împăratul Asiriei: «Nu va intra în cetatea aceasta și nu va trage nicio săgeată acolo. Nu va veni în fața ei cu vreun scut și nu va ridica împotriva ei nicio rampă de asalt. 34 Pe drumul pe care a venit, pe acela se va întoarce și nu va intra în cetatea aceasta, zice DOMNUL. 35 Eu voi apăra cetatea aceasta, ca s‑o izbăvesc, de dragul Meu și de dragul lui David, robul Meu.»“; (2Ki 19:35; 2Ch 32:21) 36 Îngerul^[4] DOMNULUI a ieșit și a omorât în tabăra Asiriei o sută optzeci și cinci de mii de oameni. Când ceilalți s‑au sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, iată că toți erau niște trupuri moarte. (Ge 16:7) 37 Atunci Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, și‑a ridicat tabăra și a plecat. El s‑a întors la Ninive și a locuit acolo. 38 În timp ce se închina în templul zeului său NISROK^[5], fiii săi, Adra-Melek și Sarețer, l‑au ucis cu sabia și au fugit în țara Ararat. Și în locul lui a domnit fiul său Esar-Hadon^[6].
