1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.2Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love – Isaac – and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you.’3Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.5He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.’6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’8Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ And the two of them went on together.9When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.10Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.11But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.12‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’13Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[1] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.14So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’15The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time16and said, ‘I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,17I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,18and through your offspring[2] all nations on earth will be blessed,[3] because you have obeyed me.’19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s sons
20Some time later Abraham was told, ‘Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:21Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.’23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

El a răspuns: – Iată‑mă!2Dumnezeu i‑a zis: – Ia‑l pe fiul tău, pe singurul tău fiu pe care‑l iubești, pe Isaac, du‑te în ținutul Moria și jertfește‑l acolo ca ardere‑de‑tot pe unul dintre munții despre care îți voi spune.3Avraam s‑a sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, și‑a înșeuat măgarul, i‑a luat pe doi dintre slujitorii săi și pe fiul său Isaac, a tăiat lemne pentru arderea‑de‑tot, apoi s‑a ridicat și a plecat spre locul despre care îi vorbise Dumnezeu.4A treia zi, Avraam și‑a ridicat ochii și a văzut locul de departe.5Atunci Avraam le‑a zis slujitorilor săi: „Rămâneți aici cu măgarul; eu și băiatul vom merge până acolo, ne vom închina, iar după aceea ne vom întoarce la voi.“6Avraam a luat lemnele pentru arderea‑de‑tot și le‑a pus pe umerii fiului său Isaac, iar el a dus focul și cuțitul. Și cei doi au plecat împreună.7Isaac i‑a zis tatălui său, Avraam: – Tată! El a răspuns: – Iată‑mă, fiule. Isaac i‑a zis: – Iată focul și lemnele, dar unde este mielul pentru arderea‑de‑tot?8Avraam i‑a răspuns: – Dumnezeu Însuși Se va îngriji de mielul pentru arderea‑de‑tot, fiule. Și cei doi au mers împreună mai departe.9Când au ajuns în locul despre care îi spusese Dumnezeu, Avraam a zidit acolo un altar și a așezat lemnele pe el. După aceea, l‑a legat pe fiul său Isaac și l‑a pus pe altar, deasupra lemnelor.10Apoi Avraam și‑a întins mâna și a luat cuțitul ca să‑l înjunghie pe fiul său.11Dar Îngerul DOMNULUI l‑a strigat din ceruri și i‑a zis: – Avraam! Avraam! El a răspuns: – Iată‑mă!12Îngerul i‑a zis: – Nu pune mâna pe băiat. Nu‑i face nimic, pentru că acum știu că te temi de Dumnezeu, întrucât nu l‑ai cruțat pe fiul tău, pe singurul tău fiu, pentru Mine.13Avraam și‑a ridicat ochii, s‑a uitat și iată că înapoia sa era un berbec prins cu coarnele într‑un tufiș. S‑a dus, a luat berbecul și l‑a jertfit ca ardere‑de‑tot în locul fiului său.14Avraam a pus acelui loc numele „DOMNUL va purta de grijă“[1]. De aceea se spune și astăzi: „La muntele DOMNULUI se va purta de grijă.[2]“15Îngerul DOMNULUI l‑a strigat din ceruri pentru a doua oară pe Avraam16și i‑a zis: „Deoarece ai făcut acest lucru și nu l‑ai cruțat pe fiul tău, pe singurul tău fiu, jur pe Mine Însumi, zice DOMNUL,17că te voi binecuvânta cu adevărat și‑ți voi înmulți foarte mult sămânța[3], cât stelele cerurilor și cât nisipul de pe țărmul mării. Sămânța ta va stăpâni poarta dușmanilor ei, (Ge 12:7)18iar prin sămânța[4] ta vor fi binecuvântate toate neamurile pământului, pentru că M‑ai ascultat.“ (Ge 12:7)19Avraam s‑a întors la slujitorii săi, iar ei s‑au ridicat și au mers împreună cu el la Beer-Șeba. Și Avraam a locuit în Beer-Șeba.
Urmașii lui Nahor
20După toate acestea, i s‑a spus lui Avraam, spunându‑i‑se: „Iată, Milca i‑a născut și ea copii fratelui tău, Nahor:21pe Uț, întâiul său născut, pe Buz, fratele acestuia, pe Chemuel, tatăl lui Aram,22pe Chesed, pe Hazo, pe Pildaș, pe Yidlaf și pe Betuel.“23Lui Betuel i s‑a născut Rebeca. Pe aceștia opt i‑a născut Milca lui Nahor, fratele lui Avraam.24De asemenea, Reuma, țiitoarea[5] lui, i‑a născut pe Tebah, pe Gaham, pe Tahaș și pe Maaca. (Jud 19:3)
