1Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,2and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, ‘She is my sister.’ Then Abimelek king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.3But God came to Abimelek in a dream one night and said to him, ‘You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.’4Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, ‘Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?5Did he not say to me, “She is my sister,” and didn’t she also say, “He is my brother”? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.’6Then God said to him in the dream, ‘Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.7Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.’8Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.9Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, ‘What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.’10And Abimelek asked Abraham, ‘What was your reason for doing this?’11Abraham replied, ‘I said to myself, “There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.”12Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.13And when God caused me to wander from my father’s household, I said to her, “This is how you can show your love to me: everywhere we go, say of me, ‘He is my brother.’ ” ’14Then Abimelek brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.15And Abimelek said, ‘My land is before you; live wherever you like.’16To Sarah he said, ‘I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[1] of silver. This is to cover the offence against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.’17Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again,18for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.

(Ge 12:9)2Avraam spunea despre Sara, soția lui: „Este sora mea.“ Regele Abimelek din Gherar a trimis după Sara și a luat‑o.3Dar Dumnezeu a venit la Abimelek noaptea într‑un vis și i‑a zis: – Iată, vei muri din cauza femeii pe care ai luat‑o, căci este măritată cu altcineva.4Întrucât nu se atinsese de ea, Abimelek a zis: – Stăpâne, vei ucide Tu un neam drept?5Nu mi‑a zis el: „Ea este sora mea“? Și ea însăși a zis: „El este fratele meu.“ Am făcut acest lucru în curăție de inimă și cu mâini nevinovate.6Atunci Dumnezeu i‑a zis în vis: – Da, știu că ai făcut acest lucru în curăție de inimă, dar te‑am oprit să păcătuiești împotriva Mea. De aceea nu te‑am lăsat să te atingi de ea.7Acum, dă‑i bărbatului soția înapoi! Întrucât este profet, el se va ruga pentru tine și vei trăi. Dar, dacă nu i‑o dai înapoi, să știi că vei muri sigur, tu și toți ai tăi.8Abimelek s‑a sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, i‑a chemat pe toți slujitorii săi, iar când a spus toate aceste cuvinte în auzul lor, bărbații s‑au temut foarte tare.9Atunci Abimelek l‑a chemat pe Avraam și i‑a zis: – Ce ne‑ai făcut? Cu ce am păcătuit împotriva ta ca să aduci un păcat atât de mare asupra mea și asupra regatului meu? Ai făcut față de mine lucruri care n‑ar fi trebuit făcute.10Abimelek l‑a întrebat pe Avraam: – Ce urmăreai când ai făcut acest lucru?11Avraam a răspuns: – Mi‑am zis: „Sigur nu este teamă de Dumnezeu în locul acesta și mă vor ucide din cauza soției mele.“12De altfel, ea este într-adevăr sora mea, fiica tatălui meu, dar nu și fiica mamei mele, și a devenit soția mea.13Când Dumnezeu m‑a făcut să părăsesc casa tatălui meu, i‑am zis Sarei: „Aceasta este favoarea pe care să mi‑o faci: în orice loc în care vom ajunge să spui despre mine: «El este fratele meu»“.14Atunci Abimelek a luat oi și vite, robi și roabe, i le‑a dat lui Avraam și i‑a dat‑o înapoi și pe Sara, soția lui.15Abimelek i‑a zis: „Iată, țara mea este înaintea ta! Locuiește unde‑ți place![2]“16Iar Sarei i‑a zis: „Iată, i‑am dat fratelui tău o mie de arginți. Iată, aceștia sunt o despăgubire[3] pentru toți cei care sunt cu tine. Înaintea tuturor ești dezvinovățită.“17Atunci Avraam s‑a rugat lui Dumnezeu, iar Dumnezeu i‑a vindecat pe Abimelek, pe soția lui, precum și pe roabele lui, așa încât au putut avea copii.18Căci DOMNUL închisese pântecele tuturor femeilor de la curtea lui Abimelek din cauza Sarei, soția lui Avraam.
