1 ‘Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defence.’ 2 When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet. Then Paul said: 3 ‘I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. 4 I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, 5 as the high priest and all the Council can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. 6 ‘About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, “Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?” 8 ‘ “Who are you, Lord?” I asked. ‘ “I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 9 My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me. 10 ‘ “What shall I do, Lord?” I asked. ‘ “Get up,” the Lord said, “and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.” 11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me. 12 ‘A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, “Brother Saul, receive your sight!” And at that very moment I was able to see him. 14 ‘Then he said: “The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all people of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptised and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” 17 ‘When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. “Quick!” he said. “Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.” 19 ‘ “Lord,” I replied, “these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr^[1] Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.” 21 ‘Then the Lord said to me, “Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.” ’

Paul the Roman citizen

22 The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, ‘Rid the earth of him! He’s not fit to live!’ 23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, ‘Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?’ 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. ‘What are you going to do?’ he asked. ‘This man is a Roman citizen.’ 27 The commander went to Paul and asked, ‘Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?’ ‘Yes, I am,’ he answered. 28 Then the commander said, ‘I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.’ ‘But I was born a citizen,’ Paul replied. 29 Those who were about to interrogate him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realised that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains.

Paul before the Sanhedrin

30 The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews. So the next day he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and set him before them.

1 „Frați și părinți,^[1] ascultați‑mi acum apărarea față de voi!“ 2 Când au auzit ei că li se adresează în limba ebraică, au făcut și mai multă liniște. Pavel a zis: 3 „Eu sunt iudeu, născut în Tarsul Ciliciei, dar am fost crescut în cetatea aceasta și am fost educat la picioarele lui Gamaliel, potrivit cu strictețea Legii noastre părintești, fiind tot atât de plin de zel față de Dumnezeu cum sunteți voi toți astăzi. 4 Am persecutat până la moarte această Cale, am legat și am aruncat în închisoare bărbați și femei, 5 după cum îmi sunt martori atât marele preot, cât și tot Sfatul Bătrânilor^[2]; de la ei am primit scrisori către frații din Damasc, ca să merg și să‑i aduc legați la Ierusalim chiar și pe cei de acolo, ca să fie pedepsiți. (Ac 4:15) 6 În timp ce eram pe drum și mă apropiam de Damasc, pe la amiază, a strălucit deodată împrejurul meu o lumină puternică din cer. 7 Am căzut la pământ și am auzit un glas care‑mi zicea: «Saul, Saul, de ce Mă persecuți?» 8 Eu am întrebat: «Cine ești, Doamne^[3]?» El mi‑a răspuns: «Eu sunt Isus nazarineanul, Cel pe Care tu Îl persecuți!» (Ac 9:5) 9 Cei care erau împreună cu mine vedeau într-adevăr lumina, dar nu înțelegeau cuvintele Celui Ce‑mi vorbea. 10 Am întrebat: «Ce să fac, Doamne?» Domnul mi‑a răspuns: «Ridică‑te, du‑te în Damasc, și acolo ți se va spune despre toate lucrurile pe care ai fost desemnat să le faci.» 11 Fiindcă n‑am mai putut vedea, din cauza strălucirii acelei lumini, cei care erau cu mine m‑au luat de mână și m‑au dus în Damasc. 12 Un anume Ananias, bărbat temător de Dumnezeu, potrivit Legii, care avea o bună mărturie printre toți iudeii care locuiau acolo, 13 a venit la mine și, stând alături de mine, mi‑a zis: «Frate Saul, recapătă‑ți vederea!» Chiar în clipa aceea mi‑am recăpătat vederea și m‑am uitat la el. 14 Ananias a zis: «Dumnezeul strămoșilor^[4] noștri te‑a ales ca să‑I cunoști voia, să‑L vezi pe Cel Drept și să auzi cuvinte din gura Lui, 15 pentru că Îi vei fi martor înaintea tuturor oamenilor pentru lucrurile pe care le‑ai văzut și auzit. 16 Iar acum, ce aștepți?! Ridică‑te, fii botezat și fii spălat de păcatele tale, chemând Numele Lui!» 17 După ce m‑am întors la Ierusalim, în timp ce mă rugam în Templu, am căzut într‑o răpire sufletească 18 și L‑am văzut pe Domnul zicându‑mi: «Grăbește‑te, ieși repede din Ierusalim, pentru că nu vor primi mărturia ta despre Mine!» 19 Eu am zis: «Doamne, ei știu că eu îi aruncam în închisoare și îi băteam prin sinagogi pe cei ce cred în Tine, 20 iar când era vărsat sângele lui Ștefan, martorul^[5] Tău, eram și eu de față, dându‑mi acordul și păzind hainele celor ce‑l omorau!» 21 Însă El mi‑a zis: «Du‑te, pentru că te voi trimite departe, la neamuri!»“

Pavel și tribunul roman

22 Ei l‑au ascultat până la cuvântul acesta, dar apoi și‑au ridicat glasul, zicând: „Ia de pe pământ un astfel de om, căci nu este vrednic să trăiască!“ 23 În timp ce ei țipau, își azvârleau hainele și aruncau cu praf în văzduh, 24 tribunul a poruncit ca Pavel să fie dus în fort, cerând să fie interogat prin biciuire, ca să afle din ce cauză strigau așa împotriva lui. 25 Dar când l‑au întins pentru a‑l biciui^[6], Pavel i‑a zis centurionului care stătea acolo: „Vă este permis să biciuiți un cetățean roman care n‑a fost judecat?“^[7] 26 Auzind aceasta, centurionul s‑a dus la tribun și l‑a anunțat, zicând: „Ce vrei să faci? Căci omul acesta este roman!“ 27 Tribunul a venit și l‑a întrebat: – Spune‑mi, ești roman? Pavel a zis: – Da. 28 Tribunul a răspuns: – Eu cu o mare sumă de bani am dobândit cetățenia aceasta. Pavel i‑a zis: – Eu sunt chiar născut roman.^[8] (Ac 21:39) 29 Atunci cei ce urmau să‑l interogheze s‑au îndepărtat imediat de la el, iar tribunul, aflând că este cetățean roman, s‑a temut, pentru că‑l legase.

Pavel înaintea Sinedriului

30 În ziua următoare, dorind să știe exact de ce era acuzat de iudei, l‑a dezlegat și a poruncit să se adune conducătorii preoților și tot Sinedriul. Apoi l‑a adus pe Pavel jos și l‑a pus să stea înaintea lor.
