1When David was told, ‘Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing-floors,’2he enquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I go and attack these Philistines?’ The Lord answered him, ‘Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah.’3But David’s men said to him, ‘Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!’4Once again David enquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him, ‘Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.’5So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah.6(Now Abiathar son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod down with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)
Saul pursues David
7Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah, and he said, ‘God has delivered him into my hands, for David has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars.’8And Saul called up all his forces for battle, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.9When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, ‘Bring the ephod.’10David said, ‘Lord, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on account of me.11Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? Lord, God of Israel, tell your servant.’ And the Lord said, ‘He will.’12Again David asked, ‘Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men to Saul?’ And the Lord said, ‘They will.’13So David and his men, about six hundred in number, left Keilah and kept moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he did not go there.14David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands.15While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that[1] Saul had come out to take his life.16And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him to find strength in God.17‘Don’t be afraid,’ he said. ‘My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You shall be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.’18The two of them made a covenant before the Lord. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh.19The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, ‘Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah, south of Jeshimon?20Now, Your Majesty, come down whenever it pleases you to do so, and we will be responsible for giving him into your hands.’21Saul replied, ‘The Lord bless you for your concern for me.22Go and get more information. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty.23Find out about all the hiding-places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track him down among all the clans of Judah.’24So they set out and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the Desert of Maon, in the Arabah south of Jeshimon.25Saul and his men began the search, and when David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Desert of Maon. When Saul heard this, he went into the Desert of Maon in pursuit of David.26Saul was going along one side of the mountain, and David and his men were on the other side, hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his forces were closing in on David and his men to capture them,27a messenger came to Saul, saying, ‘Come quickly! The Philistines are raiding the land.’28Then Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why they call this place Sela Hammahlekoth.[2]29And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of En Gedi.[3]

A luptat împotriva filistenilor, le‑a luat turmele și le‑a provocat o mare înfrângere. Astfel, David i‑a izbăvit pe locuitorii Cheilei.6Când Abiatar, fiul lui Ahimelek, a fugit la David, în Cheila, s‑a coborât cu efodul în mână.
David, urmărit de Saul
7Saul a fost înștiințat că David a venit la Cheila. Atunci el a zis: „Dumnezeu l‑a dat în mâna mea, căci s‑a izolat, intrând într‑o cetate cu porți și cu zăvoare!“8Saul a chemat tot poporul la război ca să coboare la Cheila și să‑l asedieze pe David și pe oamenii săi.9Însă David a aflat că Saul a întocmit planuri rele împotriva sa și i‑a zis preotului Abiatar: – Adu efodul aici!10Apoi David a zis: – DOAMNE, Dumnezeul lui Israel, robul Tău a auzit că Saul vrea să vină la Cheila pentru a distruge cetatea din cauza mea.11Mă vor preda, oare, locuitorii Cheilei în mâna lui? Va coborî, oare, Saul după cum a auzit robul Tău? DOAMNE, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Te rog, răspunde‑i robului Tău. DOMNUL i‑a răspuns: – Se va coborî.12David a zis: – Mă vor da locuitorii Cheilei pe mine și pe oamenii mei în mâna lui Saul? DOMNUL i‑a răspuns: – Te vor da.13Astfel, David și oamenii lui, în număr de aproape șase sute de bărbați, s‑au ridicat, au ieșit din Cheila și au plecat încotro au putut. Când Saul a fost înștiințat că David a scăpat din Cheila, nu s‑a mai dus acolo.14David a locuit în pustie, în fortificații[1]; a locuit pe muntele din pustia Zif. Saul îl căuta în fiecare zi, însă Dumnezeu nu l‑a dat în mâinile lui. (1Sa 22:4)15În timp ce se afla la Horeș, în pustia Zif, David a înțeles că Saul îl caută ca să‑l omoare.16Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, s‑a ridicat și s‑a dus la David, la Horeș și i‑a întărit încrederea în Dumnezeu,17zicându‑i: – Nu te teme, pentru că mâna tatălui meu, Saul, nu te va găsi. Tu vei domni peste Israel, iar eu voi fi al doilea, după tine. Chiar și tatăl meu, Saul, știe că este așa.18Apoi au încheiat amândoi un legământ înaintea DOMNULUI. David a rămas la Horeș, iar Ionatan s‑a întors acasă.19Zifiții s‑au suit la Saul, la Ghiva, și i‑au zis: – Oare nu se ascunde David printre noi, în fortificațiile de la Horeș, de pe dealul Hachila, care se află la sud de Ieșimon?20Acum, o, rege, coboară, fiindcă aceasta este toată dorința sufletului tău, iar noi îl vom da în mâinile regelui!21Saul le‑a zis: – Fiți binecuvântați de DOMNUL pentru că ați avut milă de mine.22Duceți‑vă, vă rog, să mai cercetați! Aflați și vedeți locul în care se află, precum și cine l‑a văzut acolo, pentru că mi s‑a spus că este foarte șiret.23Cercetați, aflați toate locurile în care se ascunde și întoarceți‑vă la mine cu vești sigure. Atunci voi veni cu voi și, dacă se află în țară, îl voi căuta printre toate miile lui Iuda.24Zifiții s‑au ridicat și au plecat la Zif, înaintea lui Saul. David și oamenii lui se aflau în pustia Maon, în Araba[2], la sud[3] de Ieșimon.25Saul a plecat împreună cu oamenii lui să‑l caute, însă David a fost înștiințat de acest lucru. A coborât la stâncă și a rămas acolo, în pustia Maon. Când a auzit Saul lucrul acesta, l‑a urmărit pe David în pustia Maon.26Saul mergea pe o parte a muntelui, iar David cu oamenii lui pe cealaltă parte. David se grăbea să se depărteze de Saul, în timp ce acesta și oamenii săi încercau să‑i înconjoare pe David și pe oamenii lui, ca să‑i prindă.27A venit însă un mesager la Saul, zicând: „Grăbește‑te să vii pentru că filistenii au invadat țara!“28Atunci Saul s‑a întors din urmărirea lui David și a plecat împotriva filistenilor. Locul acela l‑au numit Sela Hamahlekot[4].29David a plecat de acolo și a locuit în fortificațiile din En‑Ghedi.
