1There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite[1] from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. (1Ch 6:26; 1Ch 6:33)2He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.3Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord.4Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.5But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.6Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.7This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.8Her husband Elkanah would say to her, ‘Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?’9Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.10In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly.11And she made a vow, saying, ‘Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.’12As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth.13Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk14and said to her, ‘How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.’15‘Not so, my lord,’ Hannah replied, ‘I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord.16Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.’17Eli answered, ‘Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.’18She said, ‘May your servant find favour in your eyes.’ Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.19Early the next morning they arose and worshipped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her.20So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[2] saying, ‘Because I asked the Lord for him.’
Hannah dedicates Samuel
21When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfil his vow,22Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, ‘After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.’[3]23‘Do what seems best to you,’ her husband Elkanah told her. ‘Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his[4] word.’ So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.24After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[5] an ephah[6] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh.25When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,26and she said to him, ‘Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord.27I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.28So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he shall be given over to the Lord.’ And he worshipped the Lord there.
1Era un bărbat din Ramatayim-Țofim[1], din muntele lui Efraim, al cărui nume era Elkana, fiul lui Ieroham, fiul lui Elihu, fiul lui Tohu, fiul lui Țuf, un efratit.2El avea două soții. Numele celei dintâi era Ana, iar numele celei de‑a doua era Penina. Penina avea copii, dar Ana nu avea.3În fiecare an, bărbatul acesta se suia din cetatea sa la Șilo ca să se închine și să aducă jertfe DOMNULUI Oștirilor[2]. Acolo se aflau cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni și Fineas, preoți ai DOMNULUI. (Ge 2:1; Ex 7:4; De 4:19; Jos 5:14; 1Ki 22:19; Ps 44:9; Ps 148:2; Isa 40:26)4În ziua în care Elkana aducea jertfa, el dădea câte o parte soției sale, Penina, și tuturor fiilor și fiicelor ei,5dar Anei îi dădea o parte dublă fiindcă o iubea. Însă DOMNUL îi închisese pântecul.6Potrivnica ei obișnuia s‑o necăjească[3], ca s‑o facă să se mânie din cauză că DOMNUL îi închisese pântecul.7Ea făcea lucrul acesta în fiecare an. Ori de câte ori Ana se suia la Casa DOMNULUI, ea o necăjea în felul acesta, iar Ana plângea și nu mânca nimic.8Atunci Elkana, soțul ei, îi spunea: „Ana, de ce plângi și nu mănânci și de ce îți este mâhnită inima? Oare nu prețuiesc eu pentru tine mai mult decât zece fii?“9Odată, după ce au mâncat și au băut ei la Șilo, Ana s‑a ridicat. Preotul Eli ședea pe un scaun, lângă unul din stâlpii porții Templului[4] DOMNULUI.10Ea avea sufletul amărât și s‑a rugat DOMNULUI, plângând cu amar.11A făcut următorul jurământ, zicând: „DOAMNE al Oștirilor, dacă, într-adevăr, vei privi la întristarea slujitoarei Tale, dacă Îți vei aduce aminte de mine și n‑o vei uita pe slujitoarea Ta și dacă‑i vei da slujitoarei Tale un fiu, atunci îl voi dărui DOMNULUI pentru toate zilele vieții lui, iar briciul nu va trece peste capul lui.“12Fiindcă ea stătea mult în rugăciune înaintea DOMNULUI, Eli se uita cu atenție la gura ei.13Ana vorbea în inima ei și numai buzele i se mișcau, fără să i se audă vocea. Atunci Eli, crezând că este beată,14i‑a zis: – Femeie, cât timp vei mai fi beată? Lasă‑te de vin!15Ana i‑a răspuns și a zis: – Nu, stăpâne. Sunt o femeie cu duhul întristat. N‑am băut nici vin și nici băutură tare, ci îmi vărsam sufletul înaintea DOMNULUI.16Să n‑o privești pe slujitoarea ta ca pe o fiică a lui Belial[5], căci din prea multa mea durere și supărare am vorbit până acum. (1Sa 2:12; 2Co 6:15)17Atunci Eli i‑a zis: – Mergi în pace și Dumnezeul lui Israel să răspundă cererii pe care I‑ai făcut‑o.18Ana i‑a răspuns: – Fie ca roaba ta să găsească bunăvoință înaintea ta[6]! Apoi femeia a plecat în drumul ei. Ea a mâncat, și fața ei n‑a mai fost mâhnită.19S‑au sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, s‑au închinat înaintea DOMNULUI, și apoi s‑au întors acasă, în Rama. Elkana a intrat la[7] Ana, soția sa, iar DOMNUL Și‑a adus aminte de ea.20Astfel, după o vreme, Ana a rămas însărcinată și a născut un băiat căruia i‑a pus numele Samuel[8], zicând: „De la DOMNUL l‑am cerut.“21Soțul ei, Elkana, s‑a suit cu toată familia lui ca să aducă DOMNULUI jertfa anuală și ca să‑și împlinească jurământul.22Ana însă nu s‑a suit, ci i‑a zis soțului ei: – După ce‑l voi înțărca pe băiat, îl voi aduce și‑l voi înfățișa înaintea DOMNULUI, unde va locui pentru totdeauna.23Elkana, soțul ei, i‑a zis: – Fă ce consideri că este bine![9] Rămâi până îl vei înțărca. Fie numai ca DOMNUL să‑Și împlinească cuvântul! Femeia a rămas și a alăptat copilul până l‑a înțărcat.24După ce l‑a înțărcat, l‑a suit cu ea, împreună cu un taur de trei ani, o efă[10] de făină și un burduf cu vin, și l‑a adus la Casa DOMNULUI, în Șilo; copilul era mic.25După ce au jertfit taurul, l‑au adus pe băiat la Eli.26Ana a zis: „Ah, stăpâne! Viu este sufletul tău, stăpâne, că eu sunt femeia care stătea aici, lângă tine, rugându‑se DOMNULUI.27Pentru acest băiat mă rugam, iar DOMNUL mi‑a dat ceea ce am cerut de la El.28De aceea îl dăruiesc DOMNULUI. Pentru toate zilele vieții lui, el va fi dăruit DOMNULUI.“ Și s‑au închinat acolo DOMNULUI.
