Personal greetings

1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon^[1] of the church in Cenchreae. (Php 1:1; 1Ti 3:8; 1Ti 3:12) 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me. 3 Greet Priscilla^[3] and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. 5 Greet also the church that meets at their house. Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia. 6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you. 7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among^[4] the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was. 8 Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord. 9 Greet Urbanus, our fellow worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys. 10 Greet Apelles, whose fidelity to Christ has stood the test. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus. 11 Greet Herodion, my fellow Jew. Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord. 12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord. Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord. 13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too. 14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the other brothers and sisters with them. 15 Greet Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas and all the Lord’s people who are with them. 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ send greetings. 17 I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. 19 Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil. 20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. 21 Timothy, my co-worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my fellow Jews. 22 I, Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord. 23-24 Gaius, whose hospitality I and the whole church here enjoy, sends you his greetings. Erastus, who is the city’s director of public works, and our brother Quartus send you their greetings.^[5] 25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from^[6] faith – 27 to the only wise God be glory for ever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Saluti ed esortazione all’amore fraterno

1 Vi raccomando Febe, nostra sorella, che è diaconessa della chiesa di Cencrea, 2 perché la riceviate nel Signore, in modo degno dei santi, e le prestiate assistenza in qualunque cosa ella possa aver bisogno di voi; poiché ella pure ha prestato assistenza a molti e anche a me. 3 Salutate Prisca e Aquila, miei collaboratori in Cristo Gesù, 4 i quali hanno rischiato la vita per me; a loro non io soltanto sono grato, ma anche tutte le chiese delle nazioni. 5 Salutate anche la chiesa che si riunisce in casa loro. Salutate il mio caro Epeneto, che è la primizia dell’Asia per Cristo. 6 Salutate Maria, che si è molto affaticata per voi. 7 Salutate Andronico e Giunia, miei parenti e compagni di prigionia, i quali si sono segnalati fra gli apostoli ed erano in Cristo già prima di me. 8 Salutate Ampliato, che mi è caro nel Signore. 9 Salutate Urbano, nostro collaboratore in Cristo, e il mio caro Stachi. 10 Salutate Apelle, che ha dato buona prova in Cristo. Salutate quelli di casa Aristobulo. 11 Salutate Erodione, mio parente. Salutate quelli di casa Narcisso che sono nel Signore. 12 Salutate Trifena e Trifosa, che si affaticano nel Signore. Salutate la cara Perside, che si è affaticata molto nel Signore. 13 Salutate Rufo, l’eletto nel Signore, e sua madre, che è anche mia. 14 Salutate Asincrito, Flegonte, Erme, Patroba, Erma, e i fratelli che sono con loro. 15 Salutate Filologo e Giulia, Nereo e sua sorella, Olimpa e tutti i santi che sono con loro. 16 Salutatevi gli uni gli altri con un santo bacio. Tutte le chiese di Cristo vi salutano. 17 Ora vi esorto, fratelli, a tenere d’occhio quelli che provocano le divisioni e gli scandali in contrasto con l’insegnamento che avete ricevuto. Allontanatevi da loro. 18 Costoro, infatti, non servono il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, ma il proprio ventre; e con dolce e lusinghiero parlare seducono il cuore dei semplici. 19 Quanto a voi, la vostra ubbidienza è nota a tutti. Io mi rallegro dunque per voi, ma desidero che siate saggi nel bene e incontaminati dal male. 20 Il Dio della pace stritolerà presto Satana sotto i vostri piedi. La grazia del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo sia con voi. 21 Timoteo, mio collaboratore, vi saluta e vi salutano anche Lucio, Giasone e Sosipatro, miei parenti. 22 Io, Terzio, che ho scritto la lettera, vi saluto nel Signore. 23 Gaio, che ospita me e tutta la chiesa, vi saluta. Erasto, il tesoriere della città, e il fratello Quarto vi salutano. 24 [La grazia del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo sia con tutti voi. Amen.] 25 {A colui che può fortificarvi secondo il mio vangelo e il messaggio di Gesù Cristo, conformemente alla rivelazione del mistero che fu tenuto nascosto fin dai tempi più remoti, 26 ma che ora è rivelato e reso noto mediante le Scritture profetiche, per ordine dell’eterno Dio, a tutte le nazioni perché ubbidiscano alla fede, 27 a Dio, unico in saggezza, per mezzo di Gesù Cristo sia la gloria in eterno.
