New International Version

1 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, honour is not fitting for a fool. 2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest. 3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools! 4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. 6 Sending a message by the hands of a fool is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison. 7 Like the useless legs of one who is lame is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. 8 Like tying a stone in a sling is the giving of honour to a fool. 9 Like a thorn-bush in a drunkard’s hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. 10 Like an archer who wounds at random is one who hires a fool or any passer-by. 11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly. 12 Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them. 13 A sluggard says, ‘There’s a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!’ 14 As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed. 15 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. 16 A sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven people who answer discreetly. 17 Like one who grabs a stray dog by the ears is someone who rushes into a quarrel not their own. 18 Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death 19 is one who deceives their neighbour and says, ‘I was only joking!’ 20 Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. 21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome person for kindling strife. 22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts. 23 Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware are fervent^[1] lips with an evil heart. 24 Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbour deceit. 25 Though their speech is charming, do not believe them, for seven abominations fill their hearts. 26 Their malice may be concealed by deception, but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. 27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them. 28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

1 Come la neve non si addice all’estate, né la pioggia al tempo della mietitura, così non si addice la gloria allo stolto. 2 Come il passero vaga qua e là e la rondine vola, così la maledizione senza motivo non raggiunge l’effetto. 3 La frusta per il cavallo, la briglia per l’asino e il bastone per il dorso degli stolti. 4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua follia, perché tu non gli debba somigliare. 5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua follia, perché non abbia ad apparire saggio ai propri occhi. 6 Chi affida messaggi a uno stolto si taglia i piedi e si abbevera di afflizione. 7 Come le gambe dello zoppo sono senza forza, così è una massima nella bocca degli stolti. 8 Chi onora uno stolto fa come chi getta una gemma in un mucchio di sassi. 9 Una massima in bocca agli stolti è come un ramo spinoso in mano a un ubriaco. 10 Chi impiega lo stolto e il primo che capita è come un arciere che ferisce tutti. 11 Lo stolto che ricade nella sua follia è come il cane che torna al suo vomito. 12 Hai mai visto un uomo che si crede saggio? C’è più da imparare da uno stolto che da lui. 13 Il pigro dice: «C’è un leone nella strada, c’è un leone per le vie!» 14 Come la porta si volge sui cardini, così il pigro sul suo letto. 15 Il pigro tuffa la mano nel piatto e gli sembra fatica riportarla alla bocca. 16 Il pigro si crede più saggio di sette uomini che danno risposte sensate. 17 Il passante che si riscalda per una contesa che non lo concerne è come chi afferra un cane per le orecchie. 18 Come un pazzo che scaglia tizzoni, frecce e morte, 19 così è colui che inganna il prossimo e dice: «L’ho fatto per ridere!» 20 Quando manca la legna il fuoco si spegne, e quando non c’è maldicente cessano le contese. 21 Come il carbone dà la brace e la legna dà la fiamma, così l’uomo rissoso accende le liti. 22 Le parole del maldicente sono come ghiottonerie, penetrano fino nell’intimo delle viscere. 23 Labbra ardenti e un cuore malvagio sono come schiuma d’argento spalmata sopra un vaso di terra. 24 Chi odia parla con dissimulazione, ma dentro medita l’inganno; 25 quando parla con voce graziosa non fidarti, perché ha sette abominazioni nel cuore. 26 Il suo odio si nasconde sotto la finzione, ma la sua malvagità si rivelerà nell’assemblea. 27 Chi scava una fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra torna addosso a chi la rotola. 28 La lingua bugiarda odia quelli che ha ferito, e la bocca adulatrice produce rovina.
