1David asked, ‘Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?’2Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, ‘Are you Ziba?’ ‘At your service,’ he replied.3The king asked, ‘Is there no-one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?’ Ziba answered the king, ‘There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.’4‘Where is he?’ the king asked. Ziba answered, ‘He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.’5So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.6When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honour. David said, ‘Mephibosheth!’ ‘At your service,’ he replied.7‘Don’t be afraid,’ David said to him, ‘for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.’8Mephibosheth bowed down and said, ‘What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?’9Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, ‘I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.10You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.’ (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)11Then Ziba said to the king, ‘Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.’ So Mephibosheth ate at David’s[1] table like one of the king’s sons.12Mephibosheth had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth.13And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.

1Davide disse: «C’è ancora qualcuno della casa di Saul, al quale possa fare del bene per amore di Gionatan[1]?»2C’era un servo della casa di Saul, di nome Siba, che fu fatto venire da Davide. Il re gli chiese: «Sei tu Siba?» Egli rispose: «Servo tuo».3Il re gli disse: «C’è ancora qualcuno della casa di Saul al quale io possa fare del bene per amore di Dio?» Siba rispose al re: «C’è ancora un figlio di Gionatan, storpio dei piedi».4Il re gli disse: «Dov’è?» Siba rispose al re: «È a Lodebar in casa di Machir, figlio di Ammiel».5Allora il re lo mandò a prendere in casa di Machir, figlio di Ammiel, a Lodebar.6E Mefiboset, figlio di Gionatan, figlio di Saul, andò da Davide, si gettò con la faccia a terra e si prostrò davanti a lui. Davide disse: «Mefiboset!» Egli rispose: «Ecco il tuo servo!»7Davide gli disse: «Non temere, perché io non mancherò di trattarti con bontà per amore di Gionatan tuo padre, ti restituirò tutte le terre di Saul tuo nonno e tu mangerai sempre alla mia mensa».8Mefiboset s’inchinò profondamente e disse: «Che cos’è il tuo servo, perché tu ti degni di guardare un cane morto come sono io?»9Allora il re chiamò Siba, servo di Saul, e gli disse: «Tutto quello che apparteneva a Saul e a tutta la sua casa io lo do al figlio del tuo signore.10Tu dunque, con i tuoi figli e con i tuoi servi, coltiverai per lui le terre e gli porterai il raccolto, perché il figlio del tuo signore abbia pane da mangiare; Mefiboset, figlio del tuo signore, mangerà sempre alla mia mensa». Siba aveva quindici figli e venti servi.11Siba disse al re: «Il tuo servo farà tutto quello che il re mio signore ordina al suo servo». Mefiboset mangiò alla mensa di Davide come uno dei figli del re.12Mefiboset aveva un figlioletto chiamato Mica; tutti quelli che stavano in casa di Siba erano servi di Mefiboset.13Mefiboset abitava a Gerusalemme perché mangiava sempre alla mensa del re. Era zoppo da entrambi i piedi.
