1After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: ‘Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.’2So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,3and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord.4While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)5Ahab had said to Obadiah, ‘Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.’6So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognised him, bowed down to the ground, and said, ‘Is it really you, my lord Elijah?’8‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘Go tell your master, “Elijah is here.” ’9‘What have I done wrong,’ asked Obadiah, ‘that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?10As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.11But now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.”12I don’t know where the Spirit of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshipped the Lord since my youth.13Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.14And now you tell me to go to my master and say, “Elijah is here.” He will kill me!’15Elijah said, ‘As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.’
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17When he saw Elijah, he said to him, ‘Is that you, you troubler of Israel?’18‘I have not made trouble for Israel,’ Elijah replied. ‘But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals.19Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.’20So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.21Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.22Then Elijah said to them, ‘I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.23Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.24Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire – he is God.’ Then all the people said, ‘What you say is good.’25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, ‘Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.’26So they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. ‘Baal, answer us!’ they shouted. But there was no response; no-one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.27At noon Elijah began to taunt them. ‘Shout louder!’ he said. ‘Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or travelling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.’28So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.29Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no-one answered, no-one paid attention.30Then Elijah said to all the people, ‘Come here to me.’ They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.31Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, ‘Your name shall be Israel.’32With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench round it large enough to hold two seahs[1] of seed.33He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, ‘Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.’34‘Do it again,’ he said, and they did it again. ‘Do it a third time,’ he ordered, and they did it the third time.35The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.36At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.37Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.’38Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord – he is God! The Lord – he is God!’40Then Elijah commanded them, ‘Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!’ They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.41And Elijah said to Ahab, ‘Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.’42So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.43‘Go and look towards the sea,’ he told his servant. And he went up and looked. ‘There is nothing there,’ he said. Seven times Elijah said, ‘Go back.’44The seventh time the servant reported, ‘A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’ So Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, “Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.” ’45Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rainstorm came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.46The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
1Längere Zeit danach, im dritten Jahr ´der Dürrekatastrophe`, sprach der HERR zu Elia[1]: »Geh und tritt vor König Ahab! Ich werde dem Land wieder Regen schicken.«2Elia machte sich auf den Weg, um sich Ahab zu zeigen. In Samaria litt das Volk schwer unter der Hungersnot.3Deshalb ließ Ahab seinen Palastvorsteher Obadja zu sich rufen. Obadja hatte große Ehrfurcht vor dem HERRN.4Als Königin Isebel die Propheten des HERRN ausrottete, hatte er hundert von ihnen versteckt. Er hatte jeweils fünfzig in einer Höhle ´untergebracht und sie` mit Brot und Wasser versorgt.5Nun sagte Ahab zu Obadja: »Geh durch das Land[2] zu jeder Quelle und zu jedem Bach! Vielleicht findet sich noch irgendwo Gras, damit wir die Pferde und Maultiere am Leben erhalten können. Sonst müssen wir einen Teil der Tiere töten.«6Ahab und Obajda teilten auf, wer welche Gebiete des Landes durchsuchen sollte, und machten sich getrennt auf den Weg.7Obadja durchstreifte das ihm zugewiesene Gebiet. Da kam ihm Elia entgegen. Obadja erkannte den Propheten, warf sich vor ihm nieder und berührte mit der Stirn den Boden. »Elia, mein Herr, bist du es wirklich?«, fragte er.8»Ja, ich bin es«, sagte Elia. »Geh sofort zurück und melde deinem Herrn, dass ich hier bin!«9Obadja erwiderte: »Was habe ich denn verbrochen, dass du mich dem Zorn Ahabs ausliefern willst? Ahab wird mich umbringen!10So wahr der HERR, dein Gott, lebt: Es gibt kein Volk und kein Reich, in dem er dich nicht hat suchen lassen. Wenn die Leute sagten: ›Elia ist nicht hier‹, dann mussten sie schwören, dich nicht gefunden zu haben.11Und jetzt forderst du mich auf, zum König zu gehen und ihm zu melden: ›Elia ist da!‹12Was ist, wenn der Geist Gottes dich in der Zwischenzeit an einen Ort bringt, den ich nicht kenne? Wenn Ahab dich dann nicht findet, wird er mich töten. Dabei habe ich doch von Jugend an dem HERRN treu gedient.13Hat man dir nicht berichtet, was ich getan habe, als Isebel die Propheten des HERRN umbringen ließ? Hundert von ihnen habe ich versteckt, je fünfzig in einer Höhle, und sie mit Brot und Wasser versorgt.14Und jetzt lässt du mich zu Ahab gehen und ihm melden, dass du da bist? Er wird mich umbringen!«15Doch Elia entgegnete ihm: »So gewiss der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, lebt, in dessen Dienst ich stehe: Noch heute werde ich mich Ahab zeigen.«16Da kehrte Obadja um und überbrachte dem König die Nachricht. ´Sofort` brach Ahab auf, um Elia zu treffen.
Wer ist der wahre Gott – Baal oder der Herr?
17Als Ahab den Propheten sah, sagte er zu ihm: »Da bist du ja – der Mann, der Israel ins Unglück stürzt!«18Elia entgegnete: »Nicht ich stürze Israel ins Unglück, sondern du und deine Familie! Ihr missachtet die Gebote des HERRN, und du läufst dem Götzen Baal nach und verehrst seine Götzenbilder.19Schick jetzt Boten ins ganze Land! Alle Israeliten sollen zu mir auf den Berg Karmel kommen. ´Ruf` auch die vierhundertfünfzig Propheten Baals und die vierhundert Propheten der Aschera, die von Isebel mit allem versorgt werden, was sie brauchen[3].«20Ahab gehorchte. Er rief die Israeliten auf dem Berg Karmel zusammen und ´bestellte` auch die Propheten dorthin.21Als alle versammelt waren, trat Elia vor die Menge und rief: »Wie lange wollt ihr noch hin- und herschwanken?[4] Wenn der HERR ´der wahre` Gott ist, dann folgt ihm nach! Ist es aber Baal, dann folgt ihm!« Das Volk antwortete ihm kein Wort.22Da fuhr Elia fort: »Ich bin der einzige Prophet des HERRN, der noch übrig geblieben ist, aber die Propheten Baals sind vierhundertfünfzig Mann.23Bringt zwei junge Stiere her! Baals Propheten sollen einen auswählen, ihn zerteilen und die Stücke ´als Opfer` auf das Brennholz legen. Aber sie dürfen kein Feuer anzünden. Den anderen Stier werde ich ´für mein Opfer` zubereiten und auf das Holz legen. Auch ihn werde ich nicht anzünden.24Dann rufen die Propheten Baals zu ihrem Gott, und ich werde zum HERRN rufen. Der Gott, der als Antwort Feuer schickt, der ist Gott.« Das ganze Volk rief: »Ja, das ist gut!«25»Macht ihr den Anfang«, sagte Elia zu den Propheten Baals. »Ihr seid in der Überzahl. Sucht einen Stier aus, bereitet ihn ´als Opfer` zu und ruft zu eurem Gott. Aber ihr dürft kein Feuer anzünden.«26Die Propheten Baals wählten einen Stier[5] und bereiteten ihn ´für das Opfer` zu. Dann riefen sie den Namen Baals an. Vom Morgen bis zum Mittag tanzten[6] sie um den Altar, den sie errichtet hatten, und schrien die ganze Zeit: »Baal, antworte uns!« Doch es blieb alles still und niemand antwortete.27Gegen Mittag begann Elia zu spotten: »Ihr müsst wohl lauter rufen, wenn euer erhabener Gott es hören soll.[7] Vielleicht ist er in Gedanken versunken oder er musste mal austreten. Vielleicht ist er auch auf Reisen. Oder er schläft noch und ihr müsst ihn aufwecken!«28Da schrien sie noch lauter. Nach ihrem Brauch verletzten sie sich selbst mit Messern und Speeren, bis das Blut an ihnen herabfloss.29Dabei[8] gerieten sie in einen Zustand der Ekstase, der bis zur Zeit des Speiseopfers anhielt[9]. Aber nach wie vor blieb alles still. Niemand antwortete. Nichts geschah.30Schließlich rief Elia dem Volk zu: »Tretet her zu mir!«, und die Leute versammelten sich um ihn. Als Erstes baute Elia den Altar des HERRN, den man niedergerissen hatte, wieder auf.31Er nahm zwölf Steine, einen für jeden Stamm der Nachkommen Jakobs, dem der HERR ´einst` den Namen Israel verliehen hatte.32Mit diesen Steinen baute Elia den ´zerstörten` Altar des HERRN neu auf. Rings um den Altar zog er einen Graben, der so breit war, dass man zwölf Kilogramm Saatgut darin hätte aussäen können[10].33Er schichtete das Brennholz auf den Altar, zerteilte den Stier und legte ihn auf das Holz.34Dann befahl er: »Holt vier Eimer Wasser und gießt sie über das Opfertier und das Holz!« Das ließ er noch ein zweites und ein drittes Mal wiederholen,35bis das Wasser auf allen Seiten am Altar herunterlief und auch den Graben füllte.36Zur Zeit des Speiseopfers trat Elia an den Altar und betete laut: »HERR, du Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Jakobs[11]! Heute sollen alle erkennen, dass du Gott bist in Israel und dass ich dein Diener bin, der das alles in deinem Auftrag getan hat.37Antworte mir, HERR! Antworte mir, damit dieses Volk erkennt, dass du, HERR, allein Gott bist und sie dazu bewegen willst, von ganzem Herzen zu dir zurückzukehren.«38Da ließ der HERR Feuer herabfallen. Es verzehrte nicht nur das Opferfleisch und das Holz, sondern auch die Steine ´des Altars`, die Erde ringsum und das Wasser im Graben.39Als die Israeliten das sahen, warfen sie sich nieder und riefen: »Der HERR ist Gott! Der HERR ist Gott!«40Elia aber befahl ihnen: »Ergreift die Baalspropheten! Keiner darf entkommen!« Man nahm die Baalspropheten fest, und Elia ließ sie zum Bach Kischon hinabführen und dort hinrichten.
Elia betet um Regen
41Dann sagte Elia zu Ahab: »Geh und lass dir etwas zu essen und zu trinken geben.[12] Ich höre schon den Regen rauschen.«42Während Ahab aß und trank, stieg Elia zum Gipfel des Karmel hinauf. Dort kauerte er sich auf den Boden[13] und verbarg sein Gesicht zwischen den Knien.43Seinem Diener befahl er: »Geh ganz hinauf und schau, was sich am ´Himmel über dem` Meer tut.« Der Diener ging, ´kam wieder zurück` und berichtete: »Es ist nichts zu sehen.« »Dann geh noch einmal!«, sagte Elia. ´Das geschah` sieben Mal.44Beim siebten Mal meldete der Diener: »Ich habe eine kleine Wolke am Horizont gesehen, nicht größer als eine Hand.« »Lauf zu Ahab«, befahl Elia, »und sag ihm, dass er den Wagen anspannen und nach Hause fahren soll, damit er nicht vom Regen aufgehalten wird.«45Wenige Augenblicke später verdunkelte sich der Himmel und ein starker Wind kam auf. Dann begann es heftig zu regnen. Ahab bestieg seinen Wagen und fuhr in Richtung Jesreel davon.46Da kam die Kraft des HERRN[14] über Elia. Er band sein Gewand mit dem Gürtel hoch und rannte den ganzen Weg bis nach Jesreel vor Ahabs Wagen her.
