1One Sabbath Jesus was going through the cornfields, and his disciples began to pick some ears of corn, rub them in their hands and eat the grain.2Some of the Pharisees asked, ‘Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?’3Jesus answered them, ‘Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?4He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.’5Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’6On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shrivelled.7The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.8But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, ‘Get up and stand in front of everyone.’ So he got up and stood there.9Then Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?’10He looked round at them all, and then said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He did so, and his hand was completely restored.11But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The twelve apostles
12One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.13When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:14Simon (whom he named Peter) and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,15Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Blessings and woes
17He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,18who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured,19and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.20Looking at his disciples, he said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.21Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.22Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.23‘Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.24‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.25Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.26Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
Love for enemies
27‘But to you who are listening I say: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,28bless those who curse you, pray for those who ill-treat you.29If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.31Do to others as you would have them do to you.32‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.33And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging others
37‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.38Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’39He also told them this parable: ‘Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?40The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.41‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?42How can you say to your brother, “Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A tree and its fruit
43‘No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.44Each tree is recognised by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn-bushes, or grapes from briers.45A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
The wise and foolish builders
46‘Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” and do not do what I say?47As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.48They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.’

(1Sa 21:2)4Wie er in das Haus Gottes ging und die Schaubrote nahm und aß, die doch niemand essen darf als die Priester allein, und wie er sie auch denen gab, die bei ihm waren? (Le 24:5)5Und er sprach zu ihnen: Der Menschensohn ist Herr über den Sabbat.
Die Heilung eines Mannes am Sabbat
6Es geschah aber an einem andern Sabbat, dass er in die Synagoge ging und lehrte. Und da war ein Mensch, dessen rechte Hand war verdorrt. (Mt 12:9; Mr 3:1)7Aber die Schriftgelehrten und die Pharisäer gaben acht, ob er auch am Sabbat heilen würde, damit sie etwas fänden, ihn zu verklagen. (Ex 20:8; De 5:12)8Er aber kannte ihre Gedanken und sprach zu dem Mann mit der verdorrten Hand: Steh auf und tritt in die Mitte! Und er stand auf und trat vor.9Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Ich frage euch: Ist’s erlaubt, am Sabbat Gutes zu tun oder Böses zu tun, Leben zu retten oder zu verderben?10Und er sah sie alle ringsum an und sprach zu ihm: Strecke deine Hand aus! Und er tat’s; da wurde seine Hand wieder gesund.11Sie aber wurden ganz von Sinnen und beredeten sich miteinander, was sie Jesus tun wollten.
Die Berufung der Zwölf auf dem Berg
12Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit, dass er auf einen Berg ging, um zu beten; und er blieb über Nacht im Gebet zu Gott. (Mt 10:1; Mt 14:23; Mr 1:35; Mr 3:13)13Und als es Tag wurde, rief er seine Jünger und erwählte zwölf von ihnen, die er auch Apostel nannte: (Ac 1:13)14Simon, den er auch Petrus nannte, und Andreas, seinen Bruder, Jakobus und Johannes; Philippus und Bartholomäus;15Matthäus und Thomas; Jakobus, den Sohn des Alphäus, und Simon, genannt der Zelot;16Judas, den Sohn des Jakobus, und Judas Iskariot, der zum Verräter wurde. (Lu 22:3)17Und er ging mit ihnen hinab und trat auf ein ebenes Feld, er und eine große Schar seiner Jünger und eine große Menge des Volkes aus dem ganzen jüdischen Land und Jerusalem und aus dem Küstenland von Tyrus und Sidon, (Mt 4:23; Mt 12:15; Mr 3:7)18die gekommen waren, ihn zu hören und von ihren Krankheiten geheilt zu werden; und die von unreinen Geistern umgetrieben wurden, die wurden gesund.19Und alles Volk suchte ihn anzurühren; denn es ging Kraft von ihm aus und heilte sie alle. (Lu 5:17; Lu 8:46)
Die Seligpreisungen
20Und er hob seine Augen auf über seine Jünger und sprach: Selig seid ihr Armen; denn das Reich Gottes ist euer. (Isa 61:1; Mt 5:3; Lu 4:18; Jas 2:5)21Selig seid ihr, die ihr jetzt hungert; denn ihr sollt satt werden. Selig seid ihr, die ihr jetzt weint; denn ihr werdet lachen. (Isa 49:10; Isa 61:2; Re 7:16; Re 21:4)22Selig seid ihr, wenn euch die Menschen hassen und euch ausstoßen und schmähen und verwerfen euren Namen als böse um des Menschensohnes willen. (Lu 21:17; Joh 15:18; 1Pe 4:14)23Freut euch an jenem Tage und tanzt; denn siehe, euer Lohn ist groß im Himmel. Denn das Gleiche haben ihre Väter den Propheten getan. (2Ch 36:16; Ne 9:26)
Die Weherufe
24Aber dagegen: Weh euch Reichen; denn ihr habt euren Trost schon gehabt. (Mt 19:23; Jas 5:1)25Weh euch, die ihr jetzt satt seid; denn ihr werdet hungern. Weh euch, die ihr jetzt lacht; denn ihr werdet weinen und klagen. (Isa 65:13)26Wehe, wenn jedermann gut über euch redet; denn das Gleiche haben ihre Väter den falschen Propheten getan. (Jer 5:31)
Von der Feindesliebe
27Aber ich sage euch, die ihr zuhört: Liebt eure Feinde; tut wohl denen, die euch hassen; (Mt 5:39)28segnet, die euch verfluchen; bittet für die, die euch beleidigen. (Ro 12:14; 1Co 4:12; 1Pe 3:9)29Und wer dich auf die eine Backe schlägt, dem biete die andere auch dar; und wer dir den Mantel nimmt, dem verweigere auch den Rock nicht. (Isa 50:6; La 3:30)30Wer dich bittet, dem gib; und wer dir das Deine nimmt, von dem fordere es nicht zurück.31Und wie ihr wollt, dass euch die Leute tun sollen, so tut ihnen auch! (Mt 7:12)32Und wenn ihr liebt, die euch lieben, welchen Dank habt ihr davon? Denn auch die Sünder lieben, die ihnen Liebe erweisen.33Und wenn ihr euren Wohltätern wohltut, welchen Dank habt ihr davon? Das tun die Sünder auch.34Und wenn ihr denen leiht, von denen ihr etwas zu bekommen hofft, welchen Dank habt ihr davon? Auch Sünder leihen Sündern, damit sie das Gleiche zurückbekommen.35Vielmehr liebt eure Feinde und tut Gutes und leiht, ohne etwas dafür zu erhoffen. So wird euer Lohn groß sein, und ihr werdet Kinder des Höchsten sein; denn er ist gütig gegen die Undankbaren und Bösen.
Vom Umgang mit dem Nächsten
36Seid barmherzig, wie auch euer Vater barmherzig ist. (Mt 7:1)37Und richtet nicht, so werdet ihr auch nicht gerichtet. Verdammt nicht, so werdet ihr nicht verdammt. Vergebt, so wird euch vergeben. (Mt 6:14; Mr 11:25)38Gebt, so wird euch gegeben. Ein volles, gedrücktes, gerütteltes und überfließendes Maß wird man in euren Schoß geben; denn eben mit dem Maß, mit dem ihr messt, wird man euch zumessen. (Mr 4:24)39Er sagte ihnen aber auch ein Gleichnis: Kann denn ein Blinder einem Blinden den Weg weisen? Werden sie nicht alle beide in die Grube fallen? (Mt 15:14)40Ein Jünger[1] steht nicht über dem Meister; wer aber alles gelernt hat, der ist wie sein Meister. (Mt 10:24)41Was siehst du den Splitter in deines Bruders Auge, aber den Balken im eigenen Auge nimmst du nicht wahr?42Wie kannst du sagen zu deinem Bruder: Halt still, Bruder, ich will dir den Splitter aus deinem Auge ziehen, und du siehst selbst nicht den Balken in deinem Auge? Du Heuchler, zieh zuerst den Balken aus deinem Auge, danach kannst du sehen und den Splitter aus deines Bruders Auge ziehen.
Vom Baum und seinen Früchten
43Denn es gibt keinen guten Baum, der faule Frucht trägt, noch einen faulen Baum, der gute Frucht trägt. (Mt 7:16; Mt 12:33)44Ein jeder Baum wird an seiner eigenen Frucht erkannt. Denn man pflückt nicht Feigen von den Dornen, auch liest man nicht Trauben von den Hecken.45Ein guter Mensch bringt Gutes hervor aus dem guten Schatz seines Herzens; und ein böser bringt Böses hervor aus dem bösen. Denn wes das Herz voll ist, des geht der Mund über.46Was nennt ihr mich aber Herr, Herr, und tut nicht, was ich euch sage? (Mal 1:6; Mt 7:21)
Vom Hausbau
47Wer zu mir kommt und hört meine Rede und tut sie – ich will euch zeigen, wem er gleicht. (Mt 7:24)48Er gleicht einem Menschen, der ein Haus baute und grub tief und legte den Grund auf Fels. Als aber eine Wasserflut kam, da riss der Fluss an dem Haus und konnte es nicht erschüttern; denn es war gut gebaut.49Wer aber hört und nicht tut, der gleicht einem Menschen, der ein Haus baute auf die Erde, ohne Grund zu legen; und der Fluss riss an ihm, und es fiel gleich zusammen, und der Einsturz dieses Hauses war gewaltig.
